Sooo the RU-vid Studio app has been updated and I couldn’t get to the usual privacy settings to schedule this video, so your Monday morning video is here early. 🤣🤷🏻♂️ Goodnight, folks!
Matt Day I had to leave my video for tomorrow morning in draft and then go to RU-vid studio in safari and was able to get the schedule features back. Super annoying since I try to use my iPad to keep things simple and now there is another step I have to go through. I won’t complain about the Sunday night video though!
I already liked your older videos and I never thought that it could get even better. I like this calming down to earth way of talking about this and that much more than this lazy-cool-style (?) youtube is already filled with. With other words: I'ts simply a joy listening to you as a humble person talking about something you seriously care about from the bottom of your heart. Much love from Germany! 🤙
I love this, and I enjoy the video version! There is something comforting about WATCHING the process, and the conversation. It’s times like these where videos like this make me feel connected, like we are having a conversation across the table with a cup of coffee! Thanks Matt!
That last question was mine. I've only started photography around this time in 2019 and people like you who have a platform to give advice really help with my development and understanding surrounding photography, especially when I don't have that many people to go to for advice like this. Thank you so much Matt.
Would definitely love a podcast coming back! I still go back to those old episodes for inspiration all the time, some of the most refreshing stuff that gets me excited about photography. Love this series too
Hey Matt keep doing videos like this I personally find them always very informative (like any other video you've ever made ahah) and altough we can leave the video playing in the back still the content is very interesting to listen to so wether you choose to upload it to youtube or any other platform I'm sure a lot of people would definitely be interested. Keep the great work coming!
Really love this, something really nice about just listening but having you there as well. It’s so much more personal than a podcast which I struggle to listen too. Thank you 🙏
I'm watching while editing and I'd say post it both on RU-vid and Spotify, wider audience and perhaps it'll bring in a little extra revenue on the side.
Jon-Mikol Rosario That’s true! I’m gonna get started this week and play it by ear, but I’m definitely gonna have at the very least the audio on iTunes, Spotify, etc.
I personally enjoyed it in pairs talking while archiving. It motivates me to archive with you which I finally did it today after procrastinating idk for how long since the quarantine hit and came along with the depression. so, thank you.
I really like listening to a Podcast because I can record them and listen while I mow the yard or driving in the car ! Go For It ! You do a great job Matt ! Thanks for your time ! From A Fellow Ohio'en
Dude keep this format. Yes I literally just listen to it however every so often I look up. Also theirs context to the audio. The sounds have context and I also work in a group home as 1 of my current day jobs and the guys I care for watch it while I listen and do other things.
I love the open format of these episodes and hope you keep it up. Social Distancing arrived last week. The book looks amazing and it feels good that the funds are going to support people affected by this whole mess.
Podcast would be great - The Negative Positives Film Photography Podcast alternates shows with guests and solo shows every other week and that schedule is another option to consider.
theoldcameraguy Might be a good way to do it! Keeping my other podcast, The Shoot, reserved for more interview based episodes and Archives can be more open conversation with just myself or some photographers I’m friends with to talk about specific topics and questions.
Love this type of session, any opportunity for us to get more insights in to your processes, creative, and everything else that makes you that photographer you are!
I really enjoy these videos. I either have them on on my second screen when working on something, or I watch while I'm having dinner (like I did tonight). It's nice to have a face to look at and not just a voice. :D
Repeating what most people have said, things I love about this: 1. ASMR 2. Free thoughts and unscripted 3. Flexibility with what you can you use the time for. Keep it up!!
Have already received your book. Great inspiration for a similar project I am working on. Thanks for sharing. It has made a difference in my work. Keep doing what you do!
Matt Day videos are part of my morning routine I think a podcast just talking about photography in general would be great. I often just listen to the video and not watch while I do something, I think putting It on Spotify would be perfect.
I personally prefer the video format while you archive. Although I mainly just listen, there's something a little nicer about being able to see the face that's talking to me. I think it works well that your archiving while doing it. I think it makes the video a little more wholesome. If you weren't archiving it and it was just the chat, it would draw more attention to the chat. The best part of this series is that the conversation is supplementary. It's nice to have it come across a little more casual. I also think from a creator standpoint, it would be easier for you to find the motivation to archive if it was also it's own piece of content, keeping you accountable. It good content and good housekeeping. I also think that because you’re doing something while talking, it helps the conversation flow more organically as you’re not solely fixated on the ideas or the message. This format should not exclude you from having guests come on to speak with you, take Hot Ones for example. You could other creators come on and you can interview them while you archive or you could both be archiving and discussing where the negatives were captured and all that. But, in any case you can't secure a guest, you're not stuck without a show to host. I think its a really good piece of content. And for those who prefer the podcast, just rip the audio and upload it. That way everyone wins.
Would love to have these conversations in both formats! It is very calming and great to edit too! Also I'd love to see a return to you chatting with other photographers! I think a lot of current photographers would benefit from a platform like yours to give them a voice!
Yes, at least weekly, This is great and don't worry about how long the video goes, I'll watch to the end 9 Min 48 Sec, I'm still watching and already liked the video
Hey Matt! I think you should do both. Export the audio and upload it to any podcast service. That way, you're "forced" to keep the concept of "archive". The sound of the cutting and the "peel" gives a unique touch to it.
Duuuude Andrew Reynolds- the fucking boss was my absolute favorite skateboarder growing up too. He was the reason I started skating huge gaps and stairs. Those were the days man. Early 2000s
I really love this I’d love to know your thoughts on Kodachrome and 16mm movie film and if you ever plan to do do something like that I really do appreciate this thanks again
I like the idea of the time window to purchase a copy of a publication rather than having a limited edition of copies, this gives the opportunity to all who wants a copy to have it, and then becomes limited when the time is over. I think it's a good choice.
I really enjoy the format ... since you talked about you listening to podcasts ... question for the next “archive with me”: what are your favorite podcasts you listening to?
Great Video Matt. Really enjoyed last weeks as well, it inspired me to get to work on my backlog of film that I never got around to cutting, sleeving and scanning - still have a lot more to do, but you gotta start somewhere, right...feeling a lot more hopeful about this task. // My vote is to try both and see what the responses are. Then decide.
A weekly version of this (when you can fit it in) would be awesome, and yes podcast format (with archiving background sounds) would be great as it's easier to leave on in the background with a phone - compared to the youtube app which stops playing if you put it in the background.
I am really enjoying these videos, man. That photo of Hillary and I is still one of my favorites. Can't wait to get together again once all of this is over.
Watching and listening while developing. In my dream world you'd do both a video like this and a audio only version. Sometimes when I work at home I like to have a vid-cast of sorts up on my second monitor but other times when I travel a lot I don't have time to sit and watch a video. That's only my perspective, if that takes to much time for you to do and I could only pick one, I'd vote for a longer podcast where you get to ramble freely
Dude, if you can manage then please make the weekly. I’ve started watching these while scanning and developing my film and it feels like I have somebody doing it with me!
I think this is better as a video so we can see the stack get smaller. Would prob be motivating for people watching. And also if you answer questions about shots taken you can put them up. So I'm voting for either both or just video for this series. Hope this helps, and stay safe.
I’m trying to think of the best way to do it. At first, I thought maybe I would go through comments on the previous week’s episode, but if it ends up only living on podcast platforms where comments aren’t available, maybe I’ll set up a separate email address just for podcast questions/topics. I’ll let you guys know when I decide!
Hi Matt, First of all, love these video's! Second, recently you talked about documentaries, have you watched ''slang aperture'' from 2012? Its so awesome! It's all about a film photographer in New York, loved it, enjoy!
I would want to see a published book on the stuff that’s most precious to you: family photos. Now I of course dunno if you’re interested to ever do it. But just saying it would be amazeballs! Like Sally Mann style..
Yes to weekly shows....a structured podcast might become too much of a commitment, but a random conversation works. Even better if the audio is on a podcast platform
Would love a video and and podcast. I’m a little new to film photography. I have been doing it for a while but just got really back into it as like an outlet. I’m trying to learn a lot more about it and like to put the video on in the background while at home but listen to podcast while not at home
I think you should do the solo podcast idea. If you uploaded a video on RU-vid and the audio on iTunes/spotify that would be great. Also, I like the sounds of you archiving!
Bring the podcast back! I am not trying to kinda "plug" myself or anything like that but, it would be cool if you or anyone from the community would kinda go out of the ordinary and go discover new talent out there because I feel like all youtubers, podcasters (if that is even a word) are featuring the same group of ppl in their videos, podcast and it's all starting to feel repetitive, don't get me wrong, I love all the content specially yours. It's just the way I'm perceiving it as part of the audience ya know? It's past my bed time I might be blabbing too much! Lol! Thanks for the video Matt, stay safe!
Hey Matt. You did a review on the olympus xa not so long ago. I ended up buying the simplified version (xa 2), shortly after. I just want you to know, it has become my fave camera, (and that's saying a lot, I have a lot of cameras:). It's just so liberating to shoot that thing. Thanks :)
Love to actually see you talking. I feel like its kind of more personal. But i understand that maybe not everybody looks into youtube for talking. So i would prefer if you did it weekly on RU-vid. But do what suits you best people will follow your desicion anyways. Thanks for your work btw ;)
