I like that the opposite of "grootouders" is "kleinkinderen". In most other languages it is "grandchildren", but if you think about it, Dutch actually gets it right.

It's what everybody will recognize who tries to learn a new language by immersion instead of through school. At school we get presented with a base vocabulary, idiom and grammar and the "method" of the moment makes sure the next thing builds on the previous. In the streets, social life, you get surprised all the time while you don't have the "word image" to go with what you heard (the visual of spelling). We understand each other in spoken language because we know what is coming and if you have no clue then it is very hard to figure out words and remember them - as illustrated in the video. I hope the two people in these bits did not feel insulted - it was funny to me for a couple attempts.

For all four years of high school I worked for a Dutch guy who had "come the boat over" to the USA in the 1950s. He had a small landscaping company and hired many kids like me from local Dutch descendants. He constantly called us "jonge". Like many immigrants, he combined English with his native tongue in a form of Dunglish. He had a thick brogue, though he seemed to be able to turn it on and off at will. When a customer didn't understand what he was saying, I would translate. I learned to work hard and treat people with respect. While "jonge" is indeed a funny sounding word, for me I also think of it as a term of endearment. It was much better to be called that than being called a "klootzak". 🙂

it's similar to nice. Sarcasm works well on that as well. The hardest thing about Dutch is that the words can be used in so many different ways, like pancake for example. Edible, but also a doofus. Egg white like the protein, but also the egg white. Some words can be used in like 20 different contexts. Vogelverschrikker would be a very odd word I suppose - literally bird-scarer. Scarecrow... Angstschreeuw... Scream of terror. Koppensneller; headhunter. kunstje, trick... Kankerlijer... Someone suffering from cancer - mostly meant as an insult, rarely literally. This is also pretty unique in Dutch. Most other languages use genitalia as insults. We wish eachother a merry disease... And combinations are popular... Pestpokkepleurislijder...

@@qwertyuiopzxcfgh I was about to say that. We had a melodramatic (for fun) friend that would throw himself on the on the couch and yell; 'Yes yes, destroy it all, it does not matter!' whenever you dropped a small cartboard box. Only every once in a while ofcourse, for comedic effect. I went through a phase of adding; 'Oh no...nów the world is going to end.' after something dropped, with a serious face, to add that bit of drama onto the accident. And one of the classics is my dad asking; 'Doet-ie het nog?' (does it/he still do it?) right after it fell. And I mean, ríght after it falls, before you can pick it up. He (and now I as well) use the same phrase for people, when they're not around. So my mom will say; 'I visited my old group yesterday, the one that was taught by mister Wit' and my dad would ask; 'Ah, mister Wit, doetie het nog?' (does it/he still do it?) and my mom would answer; 'Yeah, he was very animated and happy' or 'No, no, he died a few years ago, sadly.' "It" in this case is then...what you're supposed to do. Does it still do what it was doing before...does it continue, or has it stopped.

Sinasappelsap for me is always been funny 🤣🤣 just an orange juice, but sounds silly and funny. Or there is a fruit, they call it "kaki fruit", but for me word '' kaki" is "shit" from Russian and Latvian languages.

I am Dutch, here are a few of my favorite words (I sound like Julie Andrews there...it's not kittens or packages with strings.) - Stippen/Stippels (Dots) - Geinig (Kinda funny) - Guitig (cheeky-happy, or arrogantly happy, in a cute way.) - Snoetje (little snout, for a child's face or an animal, usually) - Jonkie (young one, but in a diminutive-way) - Belatafelt (not sure how to translate, but if someone screams at you; 'ARE YOU BELATAFELT?' it means they think you're insane and have crossed the line severely. - Poezebeest (Catty-beast) - Schateren (loudly laughing) - gunstig (prosperous, or, when it's about a price, a nice price.) - schikken/schikte (adjusting/she adjusted.) - Een hengst geven (literally hengst is a stallion. To give someone a 'hengst' is to whack them, usually on top of the head with something.) - bezopen (drunk, but often used as; 'That is bezopen' (that is insane) - verzopen (drowned, but a bourgondic way of phrasing it. My parents, and as far as I know many others, call you a verzopen kat/katje when you arrive drenched after having cycled through the rain. A drowned kitten.) Words that I strongly dislike: - Zalig (enjoyable, usually used by the Flemish.) - Vochtig (moist) - Balsem/Balsam - Genezen/Genas (healing/healed) - Laaf (oaf/dwarf/fairytalecreature that is short and big and stupid) - Stoofpot (stew) - Sudderen (simmer) - Lillen (the ungainly trembling/movement of independent flesh/skin hanging on someone's body) - Geurende (smelling) - Dot (tuft) - Zachte smeltende wax (soft, melting wax) - besprenkelt (sprinkling) - knurft (fool) - knoert (oldfashioned word, something large or big, like a gigantic mistake or a gigantic car.) - knots (club/knotstick, also used for 'crazy.' During the Max-Verstappen-race, the commentator said it was a knots-knots-knots-knots-knots-insane race and I honestly nearly screamed out of frustration. Hate that word.) - Lammeren (either an oldfashioned word for loads of lambs, or the verb of a sheep having lambs.)
