The lack of gloves part is the most sobering for me. It makes sense, but it signifies an implicit understanding with the technician that they're trying to keep you alive, but you're going to lose your hands. Oof.

The whole suit is also only a limited protection. If the device goes off, depending on the mass of the explosives, chances are, due to the pressure increase, all the "hollow" parts of your body will explode, that is lungs, eyeballs etc. What the suit is extremely good for is keeping your body in one piece.

Its actually very smart, you are using the water as an explosively formed projectile that is traveling so fast that it destroys the bombs internals before fuses can react or wires can send signals or a charge. The different ways you can force the water as a knife, jet or wall means it can even cut through metal cased devices or rip them apart. The composition and simple construction of these devices means that you can pretty much assemble them anywhere in the world and with few moving parts minimises what can go wrong.

I just look at the whole suit as being like a can of dog food. If a bomb explodes in front of it, the over pressure and shockwave will kill whoever is in the suit but all that kevlar, nomex and plates keep all the meaty chunks together.

We had an IED attack the final month of our deployment in 08'. Shredded the front half of an Up-Armored HumVee, got through the dash and left charred streaks everywhere. Thankfully I operated a different vehicle, but this video still gives me chills. These things are no joke.

I remember back in school we had a project where we had to make a slideshow about what we want to be when we grow up. One kid said he wanted to be in the bomb squad and talked about how the job is done. The teacher had a really worried look on her face for some reason.

The sad thing is, depending on the type of bomb, if it goes off It can still kill them... it just keeps them in place and together except for the hands.

i recently worked on a tractor which had a shotgun shell start option. it's old and ill probably never see this design again but a shot gun shell way in mechanics works well .

8:57 - lol I am going to lose my mind. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why military and police professionals REGULARLY pronounce "balaclava" as if it has 5 syllables and is spelled "ba-la-ca-la-va." It's pronounced "ba-la-cla-va." There is no "a" after the "c."
