FD RX-7 Fuel Filter Relocation

It is time to get the FD RX-7's fuel filter moved to a more accessible location. The factory location is mounted to the body just above the rear diff and generally tedious to service. While I already had the differential removed, this was a relatively easy mod to make. Note: OE fuel lines are 5/16" size.

Pumped for the lift man!! I dream of giant woodshop/workshop combo with a lift or two. Be so epic to not be on Jack's doing major work like this. Plus double the garage storage space

I've spent countless hours under cars/trucks on jack stands and it will be awesome having a lift. I think it will really speed up a lot of projects and give me more options for completing projects. I should be able to bring the Datsun inside for storage once the lift is installed, but I may need to reconfigure my garage door to high lift first.

@@IconGarage plus not being bent over doing brakes and twisted doing trans work sounds sexy

enjoy that 7, i have own many and the detail you been putting into bringing this one back to life it shows how much you care for the car. as a veteran dealing with ptsd this pushed me to pick up a project truck and getting back to wrenching has helped a lot in the last two months. thanks for the inspiration to get back under the hood and exercise my mind. as for the project truck im putting together a 2000 f150 v6 with a 5 speed manual. trans work chasis and engine rebuilt all in the garage has made me appreciate life even more, now if i could back to riding my 2012 hayabusa thats been sitting for a few years, that would be the icing on the cake... keep wrenching and good luck with that 7...

Thank you sir! Your comment means a lot to me. My first vehicle was a Ford Ranger and I eventually want to get another truck. I hope you can get your bike back on the road!

Nice work. You might just put a shield made out of some sheet metal around the filter housing. This should be plenty enough. If something hits the rear axle so hard that it rips of the filter, I guess the filter will be the least of your problems. The other thing though are the clamps on the fuel lines. Normally you don't want to use screws because the tend to loosen up over the years. Check out the video of the burned F355 that Tavarish owns.

that was actually the screw rubbing through another line, but yes, spring clamp would be better :)

Once I know the fuel flow requirements of the engine build, I will probably switch to a higher flow and finer filter that will tuck completely behind the rear subframe and won't hang below the bottom of the subframe. I had a brand new OE filter on hand so I am using that for now. The clamps are high pressure hose clamps and I think if they are properly torqued, there shouldn't be too much risk of the screws loosening, but I will definitely keep my eye on them.

Noticed you don’t have that subframe type bar out of the way or missing? Trying to tackle it now but that bar frame is in the way 😩

I don’t have one. I think the 1994 and up FDs have a different rear subframe that is reinforced.

Icon Garage gotcha and I didn’t realize your diff was off! 😁 Anyway I got it done, it was a pita! Lol but the car runs better and cured my hot start issue!

20 minutes to change every 30k miles or even every 10k miles according to the RX7 forum. I think you've read that. Yes, it's tucked away but your new position is rather vulnerable IMO. Currently, there is one pipe rubbing on the body and the rubber mounted subframe will make it chafe. Better maybe to route it to the other side of the adjacent hose?

Once I have rebuilt the engine and better understand the fuel flow requirements, I will switch to a larger and finer fuel filter that will tuck higher on the subframe. For now I will stick with the OE style as I had one on hand and it hangs a little lower. I will likely make a shield from some sheet metal to give it day-to-day protection from road debris. I know it is not ideal, but at least the lines are routed from above the diff and it will be short term. The hoses barely make contact (if any) with the body. It may be hard to tell from the video angle, but I made sure the hoses couldn't be compromised. I used additional tubing on both lines where they route over the subframe and I don't think there is much risk of the hoses rubbing.

10k is a waste of money. I know someone that changes oil every 1k miles, even that is extreme
