HERE YOU WILL SEE THE FDNY BATTLING A MAJOR 4TH ALARM FIRE IN 3 PRIVATE DWELLINGS ON KINGSLAND AVENUE IN THE WILLIAMSBURG AREA OF BROOKLYN IN NEW YORK CITY.
I was just talking to my husband about the exact same thing. There is no good time for something like this to happen, of course. But to have it happen so close to the holidays is even worse. Especially thinking about the families who lost everything, but still have to find a way to make Christmas come, for children who are too little to understand. And thinking about how this memory will be forever associated with what should be a happy time of year. Any time something like this happens, it changes the victims' lives forever. But for these victims, Christmas will never be the same, either. It breaks my heart.
Great coverage. These are what we called “Railroad Buildings”. There is one center stairwell with an apartment on both sides of the stairwell. The apartments extend from front to rear with no wall that separates the rooms. Usually the kitchen/dining are located in the rear. The bedroom and bathroom in the center with the living room in the front. Most building have the entrance off the kitchen. Some buildings may have a door in the living room that leads to the hallway. Thus you can go from the front to the rear of the apartment without opening any other door (except for the bathroom). It’s like walking through a series of railroad cars with the front and rear door open. I grew up in Bushwick then moved to Richmond Hill. These buildings are common in Bushwick, Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Some may even have a dumwaiter in the kitchen that would lead to the cellar for the iceman to deliver the blocks of ice for the apartment’s ice box. It was also used to transport garbage/trash for the super to store it until the garbage truck made its rounds. Over time these dumwaiters were removed and the apartment doors were sealed up. As these apartments are basically open spaces, a fire can spread from one end to the other if not extinguished quickly. The dumwaiter shaft creates a (chimney effect) for the fire to extend from floor to floor. The stairs are made of wood and the stairwells are open. The apartment walls are made of plaster and lath. With the floors being made with wood. The exterior is also made of wood rather than brick. Having no fire stop between the exterior and the interior a fire unchecked will travel up the walls. The “railroad apartment” buildings were built during the 1800’s to early 1900’s. As immigrants arrived in the city they needed a home and employment. There were a lot of small businesses centering around garment manufacturing, metal/machine making and breweries. The Brooklyn waterfront employed workers for loading cargo, sugar refining etc. The Brooklyn Navy Yard employed hundreds of tradesmen necessary for ship building and repair. To accommodate these people the railroad apartment houses were easy to build and lower in cost to build. That’s the long history. Take care and regards.
WELL, JOSEPH I KNEW SOME OF THIS STUFF AS SOME OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE LIVED IN RAILROAD APARTMENT BUT THANKS SO VERY MUCH TAKING THE TIME TO POST THIS FOR ME AND VIEWERS.....IT HEPLS US BETTER UNDERSTNDING OF WHAT IS GOING ON AND HOW THESE FIRES GET OUT OF CONTROL SO QUICK SOMETIMES EVEN WHEN WATER IS ON THE FIRE.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
thanks. it is of course a sad event but as an international viewer i really appreciate you taking the time to add some background to what we're watching and some explanation of the difficulties the fdny face fighting fire in buildings like this. 👍
You never cease to amaze me John with the coverage you are able to get. I feel so bad for those who lost everything in the fire as New York winters are absolutely brutal. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there John.
There's a lot of moving parts here. Just the radio traffic is crazy busy. Coordinating all this can only be done by the best. FDNY. Fantastic job John. Bet you're glad to get home and dry off.😮😊
Great video John as always. Its sad to see people lose everything. Great job by FDNY and EMS and NYPD. THE 🇬🇧🎄☃️Edit:- I hope everyone was safe and no major injuries. 🙏
Thanks for another great well covered video 👍..Stay safe its cold... you've been busy alot big calls been happening.. Again super professional job by FDNY 👍🚒 stopping these fires from spreading..God Bless...
Great job, JJ! I want to offer a free tip to everyone that watches these big fire vids. It totally adds to the immersive experience of what’s going on. I’ve started plugging in the address’ of the fires to Google Earth (3D) and kind of ‘flying’ around the area to get a super perspective of what’s happening and what these guys may be experiencing. I started doing this on the building collapse vid earlier this week and it just adds an extra layer. Hope this helps..peace to all..and happy holidays!
Great job! You always get good content and great point of views. I think you should be awarded for your work and contributions. The city of New York and the NYFD should have a award for this kind of work. You should also be giving a pension from the NYFD for all the work by showcasing the great work they do, and for the risks you take and all the dangers you endure. Especially all the smoke you inhale showcasing them. I wish you would wear a mask, due to the complications these fireman face from the smoke inhalation. Stay on top and keep up the great work.✌🏾and✌🏾see you on the other side. And Get A Mask, Please!!!
Once again, great coverage John. You and the brave members of the FDNY had a busy couple nights. Thank you John for your coverage. You do a great job. Next time I come to NYC from southern New Hampshire, I want to buy you a drink or dinner for your hard work.
Hey John. It's devastating to see these large disasters so close to Christmas. Sending my prayers to everyone. I hope you and the FDNY get a much needed break. Stay safe. And as always, a great job.
Thanks for this video demonstrating FDNY battling a fire in a complicated complex of homes! So sad to see these homes burning. Hope all citizenz and firefighters are safe. The location is not far from Pratt Institute, my Alma Mater.
Outstanding video, thank you for these videos. Great work by FDNY. Hopefully a slow down in the amount of fires that have occurred. Prayers for the families. Stay safe
John I was watching a news article here, about the New York governor announced that a cut in the FDNY, 😢😢😢😢I was shocked mate by the news please keep me posted ok mate regards Warren.
Great coverage!! Haven’t seen anything this good (translate as BAD) in a long time! Thank God no collapse or injuries! Golden Nozzles all around for the members on the hoses fighting the Demon the old fashioned way in the smoke and water. I must say, it adds to the excitement to have the rig lights flashing and the members reflective strips glowing! Your picture quality is amazing!! Now, dry those feets, grab that grub, and collect those 💤💤💤! ❤️🔥🚒❤️🔥
Awesome video John. FDNY did a wonderful job. Terrible to be cutting responders. So much happening they will be sorry they did that. Great job. Stay safe out there...🎄🤗🤗
Hey J, L-46 1st due the other night in Bronx, L146 1st Due here. Typical cold spell. Complete difference from the 10-77, here everything burns. Stay safe
I love your fireground videos , they're the best on all of RU-vid , no one else even comes close . I wish there was someone in Chicago that would do the same , although there are a couple of guys doing them they don't capture the fire or the action like you do , and they are also very short , 10 minutes at the maximum , and they don't seem to record anywhere near as many fires as you do , I'm sure they happen they just don't get recorded .
Great video as usual, you have been very busy the last few days, hope your taking care of yourself. It’s heartbreaking to see people lose everything especially this close to the holidays. Stay safe.
Just out of curiosity, what substance is used to cover the original wood on these and so many of these old buildings? We don't use these sidings in Australia, probably because of our weather conditions, so many bushfires and grassfires. The material used seems highly flammable
So sad to see people lose everything especially at this time of year. Sad to see at anytime but really on the holidays. Prayers for comfort and strength. Blessings for FDNY and EMS for the tremendous job they do. Blessings to you John for your wonderfully job you do. Every one prayers for health and safety. 🚒🤗❤
We need a break from the fires I think, so hey NY, make JJ settle for covering the Christmas lights for a few days! Great coverage as always, and so sad for the the folks who lost their homes. I hope all escaped with their lives.
Hello John I appreciate your videos but I don’t understand how your allowed to get so close to the fires here in the uk you would not be allowed safety and that but please keep yourself safe and wrap up warm the winters in New York can be freezing.👍👍👍👍👍
It's odd how exposure 2 seemed to get much more damage than the original fire building , if I'm understanding it all , the main fire building is the two story closer to the street and exposure 2 is the 4 story building to the left of the main fire building , I did notice a small amount of fire in exposure 1 at the rear.of that building , if I'm getting it all correct . When I was on the fire department it was in a very rural area ,.exposures were usually barns or houses depending on which stated first but most of the time when we got.the call it was because someone noticed the orange glow in the night sky everything was fully involved by then , it was so rural that even during the day no one would see the fire unless they noticed a huge smoke column ,it was so rural the closest store.was.a 7-11 in the next town , that was 7 miles away , our fire district was 90 square miles .
Yeah you are definitely right about people being salty at this one it was a difficult fire to handle but as usual your coverage was great 2N2 my friend 49:57
@dawnmichelleseidlgodsey120 The members were salty because this was a tough fire to get a handle on if you watch it again were the line on the ground and roof top they were just having a difficult time and unfortunately they couldn’t get a tower ladder placed in that spot
Was this the 10-75 that came in while you were filming the 5th alarm taxpayer fire? I was amazed that they struck the 3rd alarm within 20 minutes of the original call. That was a fast moving destructive fire. Also do you ever go to large fires out in Staten Island, Flushing, or near Long Beach Rockaway Beach area? I know I've seen you go as far out as Terrace Heights locally at least, but don't recall seeing you out to those further locations.
THIS FIRE WAS LAST NIGHT, THE OTHER ONE WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE.....YES I TOO WAS IMMPRESSED ON HOW QUICK THEY TRANSMITTED THE 1ST 3 ALARMS AND YES THIS FIRE WAS VERY BAD AND FAST MOVING.....I GO TO LARGE FIRES EVERYWHERE AND WHEN EVER I POSSIBLY CAN FOR SURE AT HAVE TRAVELED FAR FOR A LOT OF THEM.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
You would not get far having words with the incident commander or any chief for that matter. FDNY is a cohesive team fully aware at all times what is going on and you do not second guess or question why unless involves IMMEDIATE THREAT TO LIFE that the chief is unable to see. MAY DAY MAY DAY MAY DAY.
What Adirondack village volley house you work in.. ?? Not too smart saying " you" would have words with the Chief.. I could see guys lining up ..IFO command post to knock you out..if DC didn't do it himself.. FDNY Is a circus.. they got enough clowns..
SOMETHIN I SAY FOR THE VIEWERS UNTIL I FILM ANOTHER VIDEO FOR THEM.....IT HAS NO BIG MAENING TO ANYTHING SPECIAL AT ALL.....IT'S LIKE "SEE YA LATER ALLIGATOR".....THANKS SO MUCH.....
I sent John a long comment and they were all great comments and apparently my comments were erased immediately and I don't understand why I think it's a shame sorry John Mike
Again A Really Old Wooden Dried Out Structured 🔥Tinderbox,🏚 Setback. Which Means It's Well Over A Hundred Years Old, And Doesn't Have A Common Cockloft, Which Is Good For The Exposures, 🏠🏚🔥🏠I Hope To God 🙏🏻 All These People Who Lost Their Life Possessions, Are Taking Care Of, Great All Around Coverage, JJ, The Bravest Saved The Surrounding Homes, Which Could Have Been A Major Catastrophe. I Didn't Hear Any 10 - 45s , Except For Wet Feet 🦶🏼🦶🏼 Capeesh. J J, You Should Do A Follow-Up, Of This Heart Breaking Job. The People Who Lost Their Homes, Would Appreciate It. Might Even Help Them Recover From This Traumatic Event. Good Public Relations Is The Key To A Long Life, Along With Dry Feet 🦶🏼🦶🏼 Capeesh. 👍🏻🇺🇲
Hi J J, I hope and pray this wasn't an early Christmas present in the form of a lithium Ion Battery for a scooter or bike.... We've had 2 house fires in our area due to those darn bikes in the past 4 weeks and they lost everything and so close to Christmas. The sooner Australia gets rid of the import of these cheap imports the better
John, it's supposed to read I would like to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas and happy New Year they call these things smartphones but I think they're dumb phones because like I'm dictating and everything so I sincerely apologize for all the typos John have a great day buddy sincerely m i k e😅
