It's been way too long since I've done something from the first Donkey Kong Country. If I remember correctly, it was Aquatic Ambiance from Year 1! I've been wanting to do this one for a while but I didn't want to do it too close the the Donkey Kong Country 2 medley. This song is so awesome too, it's so simple but builds so much tension throughout the whole thing! It was cool to play around with the chords with it towards the end and even try some 7-note chords in the final chorus.
Now, I also chose this song BECAUSE of it's simplicity. I've been unhappy with some of the post production stuff I've been putting out on some of these and I wanted to do a cover that would be really quick to lay down the tracks so I could spend a lot of time on mixing, mastering and video editing. One of the most important and maturing realizations I've made about mixing is that you can't make something sound like something that you can't hear, if that makes any sense. Like, you can do things all day that you know other people do to make a mix sound good, but it probably won't sound good for your mix unless you truly understand why it sounds good. At least that's my experience so far with it. Hopefully in the final stretch of Year 3, I can dish out some of my best sounding mixes ever!
Next week I've got a cover that everyone seemed to be covering a month of two ago, so I decided to hold off. I guess twitch watchers with see why. :)

It's weird to think that a track this awesome that must have taken a lot of work to put together only appeared twice in the game (Oil Drum Alley and Blackout Basement)... but this is something Rare consistently did throughout their history. This non-symmetry Is a big reason I loved these games so much.

What you did with the bassline at :58 is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. this is by far the best song you have done man. really like how it was mixed. the dual lead guitars sound so crisp and clean! the bass is punchy but not overbearing. and the rhythm section is present, yet not overbearing. literally perfect. i used to play this level over and over and over again just to hear the song. now i don't have to. and it sounds much better than 16 bit synth sounds. well done sir!
