I shot a western about six months ago and we had a 33 minute courtroom scene filmed in a 1910 courthouse. This is almost exactly how I lit it and composed the framing. I had to unfortunately blow out the windows to prevent the modern day streets from being seen. I have learned to really appreciate all these different angles of coverage and The variety of looks on a persons face in the scene. It keeps every shot in spatial consistency and I’ve grown to enjoy the occasional front lit shot in a scene like this.

Nice breakdown. Really interesting to see how the DP dealt with the hardest angles in the room and left parts of the table to blow out so that the lighting still looked natural. Not sure if you’ve done it yet but it’d be interesting to see some vids explaining different approaches to lighting the same scene depending on how much budget you have. Eg 1. shooting this with no budget and accepting the natural light might change throughout the day, which might look inconsistent in the final vid 2. Shooting it with a couple of cheap LEDs outside the windows at night with a high iso camera so that the lighting stays the same for all of the coverage 3. Shooting it with a proper budget during the day with some bright HMIs outside the window to keep the lighting consistent

That was so good series! Color grading was bit like in Babylon Berlin S04. By the way, can you pickup shots from that? There was lots of practicals!

I figured out the reason for the hat, it’s from Perth Heat, a baseball team that gets paid in Bitcoin, and Patrick here is their CBO (Chief Bitcoin Officer)

I'd love to see a breakdown of Tom Stern and Clint Eastwood better films. They've had an interesting take on light- similar to Gordon Willis- of not always lighting everything and making things still look great or interesting. I love your content. Many thanks for your work.

Alright bro! Commenting from the North East of the US you’re gonna need to lift the tan. Some of us are living in absolute winter miserable hell with IRE skin tone levels of 110 lol But Side light > Backlight What do you think was used to push through the windows? 20k x 2?
