This particular tarantula is simply breathtaking. It's definitely one of my all-time favorites in terms of appearance. The combination of its powder blue legs and golden color is truly mind-blowing. I'm seriously contemplating getting a sling for 18 euros. I'm relatively new to this hobby. I've been taking care of a Heterometrus spinifer for a year now, and it's been about half a year since I started keeping tarantulas. Currently, I have the following tarantulas in my collection: one GBB sling measuring 5 cm DLS, two auratum slings measuring 1 cm each, one Hapalopus Kolombia gross sling measuring 1 cm, and my beautiful albopilosum, which is currently hidden in its burrow and will soon molt. Measures around 8/8.5 cm DLS. I'm also considering adding a Grammostola pulchripes to my collection because it takes quite a while for them to grow as slings. That's why I bought two auratums to be on the safe side. , I am not afraid about tarantulas but I'm afraid that I'll never be able to stop buying new little friends. It's becoming quite an addiction. Help !
I got my little 1.5" H Pulchripes 8 days ago at the reptile Expo here in Calgary. I had pre-ordered it from a dealer out East who had a booth reserved here. When I got her home, I opened up the deli cup and she immediately went into threat pose and didn't stray from it. The only times I've ever received a threat pose from a T is when it feels extremely vulnerable and feels it is in mortal danger. After a brutal unboxing I got it into it's new enclosure and gave it a small cricket if it was hungry and help it to settle down. It didn't eat, had a large abdomen on it and glistening, so I figured it was in premolt. It stayed in its burrow for a few days before finally emerging AFTER I entered my T room and turned on the light. I immediately noticed the abdomen now smaller than the carapace so it was indeed in premolt and now was hungry. Long story short, in the span of one week, went from premolt, successful molt, and eating again.

Thankyou for the video. My H pulchripes is a pretty small sling but has gorgeous colours already. I named him/her Midas. Knowing they are fast I always do water dish & maintenance with enclosure in the dry bath. But Midas is really brave, he/she will just sit while I do water. Or he will leave his webbing under his cork bark tube to come wait for food. I really hope he keeps this brave/curious behaviour as he grows xx

Perhaps my fav. ground dweller. Mine is a juvenile. Hangs outside during the day and goes in den at night. Laid back. Only gave a threat posture once. But she had just been upgraded to a larger environment and I just walked over to look at her and she threw up a threat posture. Since then she never has again. Great video! "I miss the rains down in Aaafrica..."
I'll be curious to hear if yours continues to calm down more as it gets older. Mine definitely mellowed with age. Sounds like yours is already on its way to being a sweetheart! And now I have "Africa" (Toto version) stuck in my head. hahaha

Just got my H. Pulchripes today and so excited! This video was one of the things that made me feel comfortable getting it. It's my first old world so still a bit nervous with it. I did get a false hope I would get a chill one. Mine has already threat posed me and even had a strike at the paper towel while I pulled it away from it. I am going to just say that is from the stress of transportation and rehousing.
I went back and added a .5" sling to my last order that's waiting to ship after watching all of your videos and a few others'. Happy to say they're down to 65$ where I ordered mine today, 2 years in the future ;) This will be my first old world. Hoping to build my confidence with them as we grow.
That's awesome! I adore this species, and although slings can be quite fast, mine have not been very defensive at all. Not a bad price, either...congrats!

More often than not I feel like rolling up in a ball on the floor completely obliterated by the thought that there are so many inverts and reptiles I need to get. This species really makes this a whole lot harder. I mean it's like staring into the void and thinking "I guess I could sleep on the couch for a while. After all, why not?" Keep up the videos, I love your content!

Molnar, I can help. I'm a snake,turtle lizard person,but I had a friend who had a Brachiopelma smithii,a Mexican red knee tarantula. I loved Gary's T,he liked my snakes,all of them. At one time,I had 57 snakes. Much like the tarantula hobbiers here, the snake hobby seduces you to buy one more snake. Before you know it you have 10 aquariums,then 20,then 30. And thats the rub......its WORK. I'm sure Tom,Richard,Marita,Peter will all tell you the tarantula hobby sneaks up on you too. Before you know it you have 40 spiders. I got worn out with cleaning cages, water checks feeding plus I was into breeding too. I slowly sold off much of my collection which was painful but I wanted to pair down to 20 snakes which I could enjoy and spend time with and stop being a curator. When I get into tarantulas,I may have 10,thats it. I like to hunt,fish,play tennis,go to all Philadelphia sports,love the beach and mountains. Life is to live and you get one go around. My point to you is keep this hobby fun and not a burden. Yes,its fun to have all the different species,but you can't spend nearly enough time with each animal to get to interact with them. So my advice is keep the hobby close to you and enjoy.....it shouldn't be a burden.
@@rebelbaron7003 Hopefully I'll have employees specifically to take care of the animals when it will get overwhelming. But I plan to open an exhibition for this, I'll probably be able to have my own life if I hire the right people. And @Tom , in these 7 months I got these slings: GBB, P. irminia, P. sazimai, P. rufilata, H. pulchripes and a L. megatheloides. I didn't even get to sleep on the couch, it's incredible! We'll soon get a room specifically for this, because as it turns out, my girlfriend now wants too to get animals. LOL. Also for the past years your channel been a big part of my T life, I will do my best to educate people the same way you educated me, that's really the only way I can thank you enough. If you ever come to Romania, you'll have friends here!
H. pulchripes is easily one of the most beautiful spiders i have ever seen and im more than happy to have one of them in my collection. its still a sling but i hope its a girl. mine likes to bolt around in her enclosure when disturbed but only to find a hiding spot. most of the time tho its always out on display
I just got a large H pulc sling as my "freebie". I'm still new but really wanted a C darlingi, so I got one, along with a few other Ts. And this was also in the box. I'm glad to know it can be a good starter old world because that's what I'm doing with the darlingi and I don't have to be too nervous, with the H pulc, as long as I am diligent and pay attention.

Went back to look at some of your previous videos and I got an idea for one of your t-shirts. Something like 'slow and steady wins the re-house' with a tarantula in front of his new house with a 'welcome home' banner, lol.
Your the man tom! I have 3 of these beautiful t's as slings right now. I find they are not very good eaters at this time. a weird thing with mine is that all 3 of them molt standing up, not on there back, and none have had any issues what so ever. i think its important for people to know that if this happens u should leave the spider alone. Dont try to flip it on its back because it will be just fine. Thanks tom!
I've never kept this species but it is on my wishlist. I like to research from different sources if possible before I get a new species. I always try to find out exactly where the natural habitat of a new species is and try to learn things such as temperature, humidity, terrain and what not so I can attempt to mimic it's natural environment.
Yup, I always encourage folks to do their research, and that should include reading about their natural habitat. The only issue I've found is that people will read that the spider experiences temperatures in the 90s, and think that they need extra heat. I get that a lot. They don't realize that many live in burrows that maintain temps in the high 60s. Definitely pick one up if you can! Thanks, Ron!

awesome video as always. i wanted one of these for ages, finally got a sling which has nolted a couple of times and is now a small juvenile. is quite calm and easily one of my favourite Ts in my collection. Absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks for anouther great video Tom. I bought a half inch sling in February got more golden and blue with each moult then after it moulded last month I saw tibial hooks and the colours gone but what surprised me was the small size just 2 inches and the speed of maturing.
Thank you! :) Oh, man...that is really small! My males were around 3" or so. I've noticed with some species, males can be mature at different sizes. I had this happen with my M. balfouri. One male matured early and was only about 3". Another male matured a year later, and that one was over 4". So strange. :)
Just got a sling about a week ago. So far pretty chill, either likes to be on the wall of the enclosure, or in it's surface hammock under a plastic leaf. No burrowing whatsoever so far. Decent eater. Thank you for the info! It's so nice to have such a resource.

Great Video. You by far have the best videos and content on the hobby. I have had H. pulchripes for about a year. She is absolutely beautiful and her colorization is amazing. She was about 1/2 inch when I first got her but she is growing like a beast. She is an amazing webber with a very intricate tunnel system in her enclosure and she is an absolute monster on crickets and meal worms. She's probably over 2 inches now. Probably my favorite tarantula in my burgeoning collection of 13 now. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

@@kentstateresearch7284 That's the thing...people look at a spider on its best behavior, and they judge it's appropriateness as a beginner on that. You have to look at what happens when they are NOT behaving, and when they are wound up, running, and/or feeling threatened.
Fantastic vid on an amazing species. These and the N tripeppi are the ts that finally sold me on keeping ts in the first place. Originally I wanted a p Metallica but everything I saw said they were a no go for beginners. Now while I didn't jump straight into the deep end with old world's they were what attracted me most and within seven months had all three of the ones that first drew my eye. Now I'll say my h pulchripes is one of the slower growing ow species that I've kept being most of my pokies and other baboons save my balfouri have almost tripped in size in comparison. Went a bit off topic there but I can't get enough of these beauties, really praying mines female but if it isn't I won't stop trying until I get one as I feel there's no other quite like h pulchripes. Hi, Stewert! Love the N. tripeppi as well. I had one H. pulchripes that grew pretty quickly. The newest one I have has been growing a bit more slowly. Someone one here had one mature male in about 6 months! Fingers crossed that you get a lady, bud! :)
@@TomsBigSpiders I just wanted to update you on the Hapalopus sp Columbia large. I attempted again to pair them up last nite. I wish I had someone filming. I was catching pumpkins left and right. Finally I just locked him in with her and said a prayer. The male is ready to go, but the lady could care less. Any ideas?
@@Mikeyd8383 Oh, man...that sounds like quit the show! haha In both instances I paired them, the female was receptive, but immediately munched the male upon insertion. Was she doing any tapping at all, or was she totally indifferent? When you paired them, did you leave her in her enclosure and let him approach?
@@TomsBigSpiders I left her in her enclosure and introduced the male. Her approached her a few times. He kept touching her legs but she could careless. I now have him in her enclosure but dont know if that's the right move.

I want one of these so so so badly, but I’m still a super beginner. I only have one sub-adult Avicularia Avicularia and one juvenile Grammostola Rosea. So I’ve made myself put this gorgeous specimen on my “to do” list instead for when I get more experienced. But oh man is she tempting every time I see one.
They really are gorgeous, but they are VERY fast when they get spooked...especially as slings. If you want to work up to one, I would recommend starting with a C. cyaneopubescens first to get some experience with faster more skittish spiders! :)

Great video Tom! As I live in Hawaii I cannot keep spiders not native to the Islands but do enjoy learning about them. Especially what region of the world they are from and also the climate. I am back from the Middle East and can now watch your videos in one sitting because I have good internet again! Yay! Anyway. . . our internet service in Kuwait and other areas we worked in was pretty bad. It could take a half hour to watch a 10 minute video.

@@TomsBigSpiders most online shops sell them for £35 for 1cm sling i found a 5cm unsexed for £85 I think that's pretty expensive in my opinion also found a young sub female for £160
They look quite similar to M.Balfouri,, I have a sub adult MB and rarely see him.Waiting for the first molt( since I've had him) to see that beautiful blue coloring. I would class mine as shy,quick and defensive , if threatened. I have gotten one threat pose .all in all,a pretty cool T ..and its,also my first OW.
So glad, you made another video about this Species once again... you are so lucky 🍀 that you get to witness/observe yours as much as you do. Mine is fossorial, and connected both her cork tubes, with a big webbed hole leading in. I never seen it once I put her in where she is. I see my very small OBT all the time, molted last week and has almost that orange 🍊 color... thanks again for showing your H. Pulchripes... I see your Cannibal Corpse and Raise you Damnation Defaced. Edit- was third... but pffft that don’t matter to me.... to the other guys that say I’m first and shit.

Tom Moran she is almost of Juvie size now, I’ve heard since a very wee sling. But she has always been fossorial 🤷🏻♂️ I mean I give her the opportunity to be. As long as she’s happy, she has adequate space and substrate so maybe that’s why. I’ve seen others species be super defensive and can be nasty but I noticed the enclosure didn’t have much substrate so maybe was stressed 🤷🏻♂️ Keep it up man, I just love your style of videos Is it possible for an update on your P. @@MrTomkat030 Mine calmed down quite a bit once they got larger and stopped burrowing as much. You may see a change as she puts on some more size. I always give them room to dig as well. I don't mind if they do and I don't see them as much just so long as they feel secure. Thanks so much! Tom Moran no definitely don’t cut the fat from your videos, after the fat on a ribeye 🥩 is the best part. Oh man I am sorry you lost them, Mother Nature doesn’t like to let them long arrgh! I lost not one but two C. Cyaneopubescens I have no idea how. I still have my sub adult female and Big Juvenile though.
This one is pretty high up on my list of OW tarantulas to get, but I'm still working on getting a little more experience under my belt before I jump into the OW side of tarantulas. Ha. Thanks again for all the info!

I love my Obts they are a bit feisty and not to be messed with. But I can do maintenance and clean water without disturbing them. I can brush the female and she refuses to move. Hope all is well Tom! If you'd like a male obt I have one for breeding ;)
My OBT is a total sweetheart. When I open her cage, she just calmly crawls under her cork bark. Although I totally appreciate the offer, she's not one I'm looking to breed at the moment. I already have a few projects going, and I'm just not going to have the time once school starts up again in a week. Sorry!

Very informative and everything covered here .I am getting more OW species as I found out after keeping many NW with urticating hairs make my reaction to the hairs get worse. Those hairs does not have to be kicked yet. I just going to give up on NW. H.pulchripes will be my next addition.
I purchased mine as a 3" "sexed female" at a local expo, which sometime later molted out as a mature male. It sucked because I was really excited to be adding this species to my collection. Anyhow, in the time that I did own him, he was a great eater, very laid back (as with my balfouri, E. pachypus, and C. darlingi - I've been very fortunate with all my baboons save for my OBTs ofcourse!).. I had him on about 6 or 7 inches of substrate, and I'd say he spent 50 percent of his time perched on top of his cork bark in plain view, and 50 percent of the time in his burrow. I hope to get another one at some point.. From my experience I agree with the recommendation as a pontential 1st old world.. plus the fact that they have such an awesome appearance - almost like something between a Pterinochilus species and Idiothele mira, it makes them an awesome T! 🙂

@@TomsBigSpiders even worse about getting that male is that this guy started throwing big-name reputable people's names out there when I asked about it being female. I had a sneaking suspicion since this guy was trying to sell it at $150, but he assured me it was sexed by someone who I know and have purchased from before (who never ever pulled anything like that). It is what it is 🤷♂️ At least I got to enjoy him for a little while.
Its such a beauty that I almost impulse bought one today during Invert show in Scotland! in the end I thought I'll give it some more time I went with Phormictopus cautsu instead

Mine would threat pose anything as a sling, real spunky. Luckily she’s calmed with age, though I wouldn’t put it past her to throw up a threat if you were to give her a real good spook.
Sure glad you cleared up the random leg question😂. What kind of charcoal do you use in your substrate? Also, I know this is a crazy question but I was thinking about the sand spiders needing bone dry substrate and wondered about the possibility of a desiccant to achieve that?
Hi, Linda! Both sand and peat can be quite dry, so I don't think that a desiccant would be needed. I would also worry about its impact on a freshly molted spider.
i already own 2 Idiothele mira, my first old worlds in fact, and i never had any trouble with these bolting around or something. due to there quick growth rate, i had to rehouse them 3 times now and it always went very very smooth. i'm in the hobby for almost 2 years now and plannig to get a h pulchripes. would you recommend it or wait until my miras get bigger to get more experience? all in all a great video as always, keep it up!
If you're dealing with I. miras, you should be fine. These are a bit fast and skittish as slings, but the majority are more calm as juveniles and adults. I would say go for it! :)
