I’ve watched both channels extensively but this Q&A answered a huge amount of questions I didn’t know I still had. Very interesting and fruitful discussion thanks for hosting him! I probably won’t get into printed firearms right away but a 3-d printer just sounds like a great investment hands down. I do have a friend that printed me a figure from a game so that was cool. Funnily enough when he said you could print a washing machine knob I went “MY GOD.” Like everything he said you could print is interesting, but it’s the little things that get me lol

Black powder factories regularly blow up too, it's not a matter of if but when, so it's better to have someone else who has properly prepared for this eventuality to do it. I have a friend who is chemistry PhD, specialises in propellants and explosives. They used to make their own black powder but then the eventuality came and they got really badly burned (the scars on their hands and arms are *gnarly*). These days they buy their black powder...
@herecomesaregular8418
@herecomesaregular8418 Год назад
If you do a lot of 19th century and 18th century studies you definitely find that stockpiles of black powder often found themselves in the news for the worst reasons. Foundries, warehouses, and armories blew up often enough to not be considered uncommon.

As far as 3D printed metals go, that is already a thing. It's not done with the same method (melting & pooping out a stream of the material) but rather done with a powder + a laser. I haven't actually seen Brass printing, but I've seen a LOT of Titanium printing (Obviously not feasible for cases) and it's been surprisingly good!
@nirfz
@nirfz Год назад
True, have seen a video about a german knife manufacturer who 3D prints titanium handles for their knives. But it's a quite expensive way of forming metal.
@XFourty7
@XFourty7 Год назад
@@nirfz Yeah not something for mass production yet, but the tech is getting there! ;D
@peenwienerstein2
@peenwienerstein2 Год назад
@@nirfz Give it time. It'll become perfectly feasible eventually.
@nirfz
@nirfz Год назад
@@peenwienerstein2 Oh, depending on what you do with it, it is feasable even today. but it has it's advantages and disadvantages. The company in germany i mentioned prints 60 titanium knife handles in one go, and if the print goes well, they have almost 0 wasted material as the titanium powder that hasn't been used can be used in the next print. And they don't have to connstantly man machinery to manufacture the handles. (They can work on something else in the meantime) But: the printer is very expensive, titanium powder is very expensive, printing one set takes roughly 8 hours, and if anything goes wrong (like a power outtage even though they have a UPS, but the UPS can also have a malfunction, or a simple SW malfunction or drawing mistake) the whole 60 pieces can be scrapped and several hours are wasted. (that's what one of the owners mentioned)

I got a 3D printed piece of metal into the finishing shop the other week... Hoooly crap. It's so amazing. It's an intricate little custom prototype piece for who knows what, but it's incredible looking. Unless you looked really really close you would never be able to tell it's not just forged and machined No blobs, no visible layering. Nothing. Beautiful smooth block of, I believe aluminum. The tech from the higher end manufacturers is just unbelievable now.

I think the 3D printed ammo casing has several problems: if you do it with plastic, you'd need a plastic that can cope with the temperature without getting sticky (which makes it less easy to print) or if you want to 3D print metal casings: That's just going to be way more expensive than how cases are manufacturered since 100+years.
@jeffthebaptist3602
@jeffthebaptist3602 Год назад
Cartridge casings have several issues, but here are two. One is that FDM printers work better with low temperature plastics as you state. The second is the layer line issue. Layer delamination failure means you have to have lower stress across the layer lines (like you would across the grain of a wooden board as Karl stated). So you could make a case that is strong around (in hoop stress), but the head will fail a lot. Or you can do the opposite and then the case will split a lot. But it is very hard to do both with 3D printing. And that isn't touching on basic issues with strength, ductility, shock, maintaining the necessary tolerances, and issues surrounding extraction.
@moosemaimer
@moosemaimer Год назад
@@jeffthebaptist3602 It almost seems like you'd need a 5-axis print head that could build layers in multiple directions: inner and outer shells with perpendicular "weave," like sheets of plywood.
@hornmonk3zit
@hornmonk3zit Год назад
Eh not really much point when you can just use commercially available metal tubing that can be turned into cases instead. 6mm ID cheap brake line tubing is about perfect to press a 209 primer into, just some homemade powder and a cheap cast bullet away from having a live round.
@phildo87
@phildo87 Год назад
There are plastics out there that could handle the forces but both the materials and printers are prohibitively expensive. There is also metal 3d printing that again would totally work but again the cost outweighs other options.

So, I’ve been running the Bambu Labs P1P for about a month now, and I’d go so far as to say it makes the Ender 3 obsolete if you can afford it. It’s about $300 cheaper than the fully enclosed version, but you have to make your own enclosure. Still a $700 printer, but by the time you get an Ender 3 up to the standard of being able to print nylons reliably, you’re in it at least $400-500. Having gone that route, the P1P is easily worth saving up the extra scratch.

There's a thing called metal spinning. Without knowing anything about it, I've always wondered if it could work as a DIY alternative to drawing. The brass used for it ('spinning brass') even has the same composition as cartridge brass. (So does wire-EDM wire, if anyone cares to know.) Just like printed receivers compared to stamped receivers, it would be a pretty inefficient way to make them, but that's just the price of DIY.

I think I am on a par with Carl with regards to gun control. The question should not be why do you need a fire arm? The question should be "why are you not allowed a fire arm", printed, registered or hand made. I'm in Britain. There's a lot of fire hoops to jump through here even for an air rifle (under 12 fps). In Britain the government use the term AIR WEAPON! Just try to get an Air Weapons license, in doesn't exist! Weapon is an emotional term.

i have nothing against 3d printed guns i just think there should be a movement in the community to make them look less like toys. You wouldnt be able to tell the difference between some of the more popular 3d printed guns and one of the "adult hobbyist nerf blaster" type designs floating around Thingiverse. Foam dart hobbyists often say they prefer it over airsoft due to the fact the police let them play in public parks rather than going through the hassle of renting a field or getting permits and this is a trick that relies on them not resembling actual firearms.

He says"live and let live", but then he goes off on people for not getting the COVID vaccine, called RU-vid bans "violence" and apparently he's not a free speech absolutist like most Libertarians. He also likes to carry himself as a student of history, but then burns his smok because of what he feels it represents, and to appease 1% of his viewers.

Karl hasn't particularly directly stated what the name of his political persuasion is called, though you can find where he posts on reddit and make some general guesses, plus your point about reading between the lines, as well as a variety of his guests and what he discusses with them. As far as I've gathered, he's an anarchist of the actual persuasion, so left lower quadrant of the political conpass. While I'm not fully certain per se, usually pro-Kropotkin conversations are a obvious sign of an anarchist (previous Q&A with Robert iirc).

I like diy stuff but printing a gun out of plastic seems about as sensible as machining a diesel engine out of wood. Sure, you can, but why?
@InrangeTv
@InrangeTv Год назад
Ask Myanmar.
@smorrow
@smorrow Год назад
Ask Philip Luty. All this "for fighting the government(by shooting bullets at them)" talk drowns out the original, which was that DIY guns are an argument(for the legalisation of real ones). As for why the distinction matters, the two views of what printed guns are for aren't mutually incompatible or anything, but which one you believe in influences your priorities of what you work on within the movement. Americans losing sight of the real thing has frustratingly resulted in them almost exclusively working on parts-kit completions that change nothing because no non-Americans can get the parts anyway.
@theseukonnen1200
@theseukonnen1200 Год назад
consider how heavily plastic-based most modern handguns (and several rifles like the G36) already are. It's less of a jump than you'd think to go from that to an item where necessary pressure bearing parts are still metal, but the plastic housing they sit in is extruded PLA+ instead of injection-molded glass-filled nylon. So it's less "building a diesel engine out of wood" and more "installing a diesel engine in a sturdy wagon made out of oak," if anything. Sure it's no Bugatti, but if you need an automobile and there's no dealerships for hundreds of miles, it'll go vroom vroom.
