One thing I feel needs mentioned as far as the darkling beetles as feeders. Be weary of their exoskeleton hurting your gecko. I used to let my gecko eat them from time to time, and he loved chasing them. I stopped after he got a piece of shell lodged in his gums that had to be removed. I don't know how many other people have had issues with this but that's my own personal experience. Anyway, love the video as usual!

Keep in mind that grains contain phytic acid, which binds calcium. Crickets and roaches don’t need substrate. You can also use paper towel for them.

I really can thank you enough for these videos! You love helped me so much! I’m trying to convince my mom to let me get a a leopard gecko and your videos have helped me A LOT. I have a question tho could you do a video on how to set up your cricket and mealworm habitat? I saw on a video that you can put the meal worms in the fridge and they will like go into a sleep for a bit but idk if that’s true so a video showing how to set up and store ur cricket/mealworm farm would be great! Also how many different bugs should you feed your gecko? If I lm able to get one I’m planing on feeding it crickets and mealworms but idk if my gecko would need more variety.
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 года назад
Live crickets, roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Mealworms, super worms, and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better. For crickets, all you need is a decent sized container (with air holes and a secure lid), egg cartons, and veggies.

Hi Rebecca! Tip on Silkworms! I agree that they are RIDICULOUSLY expensive live. So I found an alternative. ProBugs! ProBugs is a company that sells dub roaches, silkworms, grasshoppers, locusts, etc. They are not alive, but not freeze dried. They are freshly preserved! My geckos (Kota and Kalani) absolutely love them! They are large, so I normally cut them in half, but they will eat them even though they are not alive! And this is also useful in case some bugs are illegal that you want, as these aren't illegal to have preserved :) -Jordyn

(Not so) Quick question. We get mealworms from a local pet store, not big brand name but a big store, at a quantity of 250, and we take out 20 or so to gutload and then feed our leapord gekco. The store told us to refrigerate the ones we aren't using and take them out 24 hours in advance, but most of them seem to die off before we get to "use" them. Is there any better thing we can do to keep them alive for longer?
@fionashepley478

You could leave them at room temperature but then they’d turn into beetles. You could breed them to get free feeders. Although mealworms are not a healthy staple diet. Feed mainly live crickets or Dubia roaches.

One of my girls only eats silkworms! I get mine from DubiaPaul.com but there are several places that sell them in the UK including silkworm store!

Yeah, my gf gets silkworms from Silkworm Store, they don't seem to be too expensive, but they do need more care than mealworms, locusts and dubias, I've found.

do you think celery is a good staple diet for mealworms and crickets? I'm tempted to get something different because celery is pretty low on nutrients

Feed things like carrot, potato, greens, and apple.

Hi I have a question... The other day I got mealworms for my leopard gecko and I noticed that they are very big and I got my leopard gecko just a few weeks ago (she is a juvenile and had no tail) and I wanted to know if that was normal?
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 года назад
Sorry, are you asking if the size of the worms is normal? Keep in mind that they need mainly live crickets or Dubia roaches

My gecko absolutely loves dubia roaches. I keep mealworms, morio worms, and dubias, and well, the only thing he wants are dubias.

I have a question. I have about 8 month old leopard gecko and I put calcium on the crickets and I don't see you put calcium on them? Do you think I still should. Is that just for baby's?
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 года назад
She puts calcium on them. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings.

I'm finding your channel really helpful. We recently got a leopard gecko for our daughter. It is currently being fed with locusts. I was just wondering, does the gecko still need calcium and vitamins if the locusts are being gut loaded? I think it does, my husband thinks it doesn't. 🤔

When I buy my crickets and mealworms etc at petscorner I am told to keep them in the small box that I buy them in whilst keeping them, is this okay to do or should I should i keep them in their own big box with plenty of space.
@leopardgeckotalk

I think they'll last longer if they have a bit more room. I used to keep mealworms in the same tub they came in, but I've just found they do better with a little extra room.

I found that especially crickets are quite difficult to take out of these small containers without some of them escaping. And I also found that fresh food goes moldy quicker in these small containers, probably because the ventilation isn't that great. I would recommend getting a "proper" set up once, then you're good to go. It's like a one-time-investment and it makes your life much easier.

Get a ceramic heat emitter or deep heat projector for extra heat and connect it to a thermostat.

Hey, nothing to do with this video but I recently switched my crested gecko tank from fake plants to bio active and my golden pathos looks like it’s dying, is there any special lights to help it grow? (I live in the basement)

There are other species of roaches to try if your geckos dont like dubias, Red Runners (Turkestan Roaches) are popular and quick breeders

I have a giant Male leopard gecko who eats crickets and mealworms as a main diet. Although I’ll buy wax worms and then feed them every few weeks and when they run out I don’t buy them until a few months later. I tried Mario worms but my leopard gecko didn’t like them.

Animal Haven I have but my Leo wasn’t interested and would just end up leaving them in the tank to run free.

Thank you I’m planning to get a gecko although I’m pretty afraid of crickets how did you get so comfortable while holding those any tips?
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 года назад
You don’t necessarily need to feed crickets. You can feed them mainly Dubia or discoid roaches with various types of worms for variety.

Fiona Shepley thanks worms may be the best but I’ll try the roaches too
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 года назад
Ghazt Ghazt when it comes to worms, most of them (mealworms, superworms, waxworms, and hornworms) can’t be their main diet and can only be used as variety or treats. Silkworms and black soldier fly larvae (aka Phoenix worms or calciworms) are very nutritious and make great staples but unfortunately they aren’t very convenient. Not very easily available, difficult to breed, silkworms only eat mulberry leaves and are difficult to keep long term, etc. Just some things to keep in mind. Roaches are a great staple and don’t really have any cons
