Thank you for watching this video. As I suspected, due to the subject manner, this isn't going to be the most 'popular' video, but if you know someone it can help, feel free to share it! 😊

Leopard Gecko so I use the 50 W deep heat projector as presented in the video, but i don’t have a dimming thermostat because I couldn’t find any good ones. However, I DO have the DHP at the designated ideal distance from the highest basking point in my geckos tank. Is this okay?

Im so glad a switched to a deep heat projector a few months ago you responded to my comment about my leo (gary) not coming out very much well i did finally get a deep heat projector for Christmas and put it on his tank which was glass and had a mesh lid (exo terra large low) i waited for about 2 weeks and it didnt have any affect on him and wasnt hot enough so i went to a trusted reptile shop near me for advice they said to keep heat in i should switch to a 3 foot wooden tank which i did and installed the deep heat projector in and now hes out all the time he loves sitting on top of his slate hide under the deep heat projector

You're my number 1 go to leo or reptile RU-vid. Thank u for such valuable info. U have no idea how many little leo lives I'm sure you have improved just from throwing good info out there. It's hard to find quality info on anything and you seem to really care for the Lil guys. I do too, so thank you! Bad husbandry is common even for cats or dogs or CHILDREN. Ppl shouldn't bring a living being into their life if they aren't willing to work hard, pay a lot and inform themselves on what it needs to THRIVE not just survive. If ppl always treated their kids to only the minimum for them to live how terrible would that be. So we shouldn't do it to our pets because they are just as alive and feeling as use. Ty ty!

Love your videos!! Always have :) Just wondering if you've considered dropping your lights down from inside? I actually have my lights installed inside the enclosure which allows me to adjust each dome/light strip ect to the desired height. Ideally the light can be hardwired to the ceiling of the enclosure but for this reason I quit doing that and started hanging the lights from ceiling hooks. Just a thought. It's made this problem so much easier for me to tackle. (side note: my lights are not in danger of falling or a gecko being able to reach them.)

Im concerned about the distance from the UV and the basking spot. In my viv it is about 11 inches away from the UV light, which from your video would be fine, but on the arcadia site it says "an average UV Index of 0.80-1.00 can be achieved at 10”/25cm from the lamp"... can you explain where your 12 inch calculation arises from? I'm from Puerto Rico and temperatures are tropical here, pretty hot even at night sometimes. Breeders here tell me not to add light and i feel compelled to agree since that would make the tank bake up and the little guy doesnt really seem to be uncomfortable, he always comes out at the same time, has energy, doesnt stay in his hide, even reaches out to me when he wants be picked up, he's a baby and have had him for like 2 or 3 weeks.

Hi Rebecca! This video was very helpful since I'm working on a new tank for my upcoming leopard gecko. For now I'll be using a heat mat, but in the future I'd love to upgrade to a dp projector. I will be using a 7% UVB Shadedweller, as well as Arcadia supplements. My tank is an Exo Terra 24×18×18, so I was wondering. Should I put my shadedweller above on the tank lid with the mesh, or hang it inside? And would I have to build the substrate and hides up more to reach the uvb light required? Thanks!
@kaysgeckos
@kaysgeckos 4 года назад
Cassidy T. The exo terra is too short for it to be placed inside. Place it on top of the mesh on the same side as the dhp/heat mat. And I wouldn’t build it up too high, you could go like 2 inches but any higher and you risk overexposing and heating your leopard gecko.

My Leo is nearly 19 and all his life has just had a basking light in the day and heat pad that comes on at night. He’s still doing pretty good for his age but you can see moving a bit slower and so I thought the uvb would be better than supplementing d3. i thought the uvb would be a bit of a shock for him but he seems to be happy with it 🙂

Real quick. What's a dimming thermostat? I have a thermostat that turns my deep heat projector off until it needs to come back on again. Is this bad? Also I have NO idea if I'm currently hurting my gecko with my set up. I have a 10.0 UVB 13 watt desert mini compact fluorescent light from Zoo Med and with the Mini deep dome lamp fixture I have it says to place it at 8 inches above the basking spot but also says that a mettle grid on the top of some tanks can limit the UVB effects and I have such a grid so is the 8 inches alright or do I need to adjust it? Also where do you buy those amazing tanks for your geckos and where can I get one? Thank you :D
@kaysgeckos
@kaysgeckos 4 года назад
Jaron Green Dimming thermostats turn down their energy usage which will then turn down the temperature. Pulse thermostats will turn it on and off to control the temperature. Ideally, DHPs and CHEs last longer with dimmers because it doesn’t turn them on or off, just dims down their energy. I’ve heard the compact uvb bulbs loose their potency quicker than linear tube uvb like Arcadia’s bulbs. You’d have to research what index value at 8 inches it will produce. If it’s like 2-5 then with a mesh top it should half it. You can always contact Arcadia on Facebook or Instagram and get their opinion on that bulb. The 80gal tank is from custom reptile habitats, the others are various wooden vivariums.

(I have it set to 93 degrees Fahrenheit) I just upgraded my leopard gecko to a 67 gallon tank. So I’m trying out this instead of a heat mat. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any ideas will help!

Obviously I'd rather sleep in the dark and was wondering is there anything I could do at night like put a sheet over the enclosure so the room isn't too bright. Also, during the summer it gets really hot in the attic while during the winter really cold. Is that a problem or as long as the enclosure is right temp is fine? Sorry if they're stupid question don't wanna rush into anything. Thanks!

Hi I'm really confused about using UV. I was using a 10 UV strip light. When I was going to get a new one I was told by several shops I don't need a UV because I'm using calci dust and Nutrobal supplements. What do you advise? This video is really helpful. I was really struggling with getting my head around heat placements. I'm using a ceramic heat lamp. Is this OK? Many thanks and keep up the great work

They don’t need UVB but benefit from it. Use supplements without d3 when using UVB, just make sure your gecko is exposing themselves to it

If you have a under tank heat pad, do you still need the heat lamp? Or would just the uvb suffice ?

Your gecko will live with just a heat pad, but I strongly recommend switching to Arcadia’s deep heat projector or a halogen bulb. They’re far more beneficial and natural.

Hello I just got a Leo and I bought a uvband heat lamp duo do I use both on together or the heat during the day and the other at night?

The lights should be on during the day and off at night. Use a dimmer or dimming thermostat to regulate the heat lamp’s temperature. Make sure the UVB is a tube bulb, not a compact one.

i need to know where i place my arcadia shadedweller prot5 7% uvb. I have a 40 gal and i need to know where to place it. Should i place it on the hot side, cool side, or in the center? Also one more question, does the arcadia uvb provide heat? Thanks!

On the warm side, overlapping the basking spot provided by the heat lamp. And no, UVB bulbs do not provide heat, you’ll need a separate halogen flood bulb.

Would a 100W one be fine for a 2 foot high viv?

A 100W what?

I have a short and long vivaruim so should I put it on low because it’s quite close to the basking area

Set it at whatever temperature you need to to achieve a 33-35°C basking spot temp. What are the dimensions of the vivarium? And are you using a DHP?

Do you need both the UV and the heat lamp?

For example if you were to have one side as the warm side for the tank can one hide have a heating mat under and the deep heat projector on top or would they have to be two separate ones?

Just use a deep heat projector connected to a thermostat. You don’t need a heat mat.

i just bought the clamp lamp and the 80W DHP for my terrarium and i also have the ShadeDweller but would they need to be 12 inches apart because i have an exo terra 24x18x12 low terrarium?

I’d get a 40 gallon (36x18x18”) enclosure if possible. Look for cheap secondhand ones. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat would be more natural and beneficial than a DHP.

If I have a heat mat already, do I need the heat lamp for basking in addition to the heat mat and uva/uvb lamp

Heat mats aren’t a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat would be best.

I have a thermometer on the wall and on the floor (area where the heat mat is). Which reading should I consider as "30/32"
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 года назад
The hot spot where the heat mat is should be 32-34. Make sure you’re using digital thermometers, not analog.

i just got my first leopard gecco, i have a double over head lamp i can turn on and off, i have the red bukb and the blue, but im not sure where or what to get for the uvb light

Ditch both the red bulb and blue bulb, they’re no good. Use a halogen bulb or Arcadia’s deep heat projector for heating. Any heat source must be connected to a thermostat (halogens need a dimming stat like herpstat). If you want to get UVB, get Arcadia’s shade dweller from lightyourreptiles.com.

I know this is an old video I understand if you don’t respond but anybody who has a question so I have a question I want to use a VB Bob I have a .50 it is about 11 inches away from the log I’ve done my research I know that parts fine but it on the cold side and I’m using a heat mat should I just switch to a basking bulb to do the full switch or should I stick with the heat mat and have the baby on the cold side because that’s the only side where the log would go where he could come out and bask in what he know where to go to bas
@myzoo2856
@myzoo2856 3 года назад
I’m just simplify it I’m using a UVB bulb it’s on the cold side where there’s no heat mat should I switch to an above tank heater or will the heat might be fine and will he know where to go to get the UVB
