I thought refined sugar caused cancer, the concentration of that bird sugar water is shocking, wouldnt they get cancer too, Would it not be better to mix honey with water, a natural food source ??

Over a period of time it may cause cancer but seriously how long do you think that these birds live for and how tough it is for them during the winter months without a food source, Wake up and smell reality.

Plus sugar from the sugar cane is natural.

@@peterdale4976 New Zealand birds are quite long-lived actually.

There is a lot of sense in what you say ...sugar is processed, even I prefer raw sugar in my tea etc.

@@peterdale4976 They only live long enough to get it, after that it could become hereditary.. A teaspoon full of honey ( even if you need that much ) twice a week wouldn't cost an arm and a leg..

Where do you live I live in Tokoroa I was wondering if tui waxeyes and bellbird would come for our sugar water

Kiwi Knowledge I was living in Omaui near Bluff and have since moved into Bluff. Once the birds know there's food they will turn up. I only feed in winter when there is little food about.

@@KahurangiSteez Tui's are not seed eaters and mostly live on nectar from flowers (and honeydew) so the sugar water is a great food supplement for them in the winter when flowers may be scarce. At breeding time they supplement their nectar diet with some insects, for the chicks I imagine, and in autumn they love berries. In winter they come for the nectar feeder we put out along with the bellbirds and silvereyes

What abut honey and water. Much healthier. White sugar is toxic.

Honey is not suitable as it can spread diseases. Pretty much every source encourages using sugar water feeders for nz native birds during the winter make it very clear you cannot use honey
