Also, remember that chickens don’t have teeth to grind their food, so grit needs to be given when they have no access to small rocks or pebbles. Chick starter does have grit in it but not enough to digest fresh greens. So offer grit every time u offer greens otherwise the chicks will be unable to break down that food & major health issues will develop. Thanks to videos like this I’ve learned so much on RU-vid about how to care for baby chicks! So thank you for taking the time to share!

I am trying to find information about feeding new born chicks a more natural diet. I have bought some certified organic feed for them but I want to mix it with blended microgreens such as sunflower, fenugreek and others…do you have any advice about that please ? Maybe even worms crushed, just want them to have a diet as close to nature as possible. I have a lot of greens growing as well that I could blend in with it all, like kale. I do have chickweed, plantain, and dandelions. Looks from your video, I don’t need to crush any of them. So if you do recommend the sunflower microgreens. Perhaps I don’t need to cut them up? Your advice would be much appreciated as my chicks are just about ready to eat!

Thanks so much for this! Got three 4 week old Brahmas today. First time chick owner, but I knew just those dry pellets in chick feed wouldn't be the best alone. I'll start giving them turnip greens and whatever else I can find tomorrow to supplement their diets. Have you ever fed chicks/chickens fermented foods like sauerkraut or kimchi?
@petebeasttexashomesteading

Glad it was helpful, I've never given them fermented foods before but try just a little and see if they like it. But they will get the bacteria they need for their gut from picking in the dirt and leafy greens.

It makes so much sense. If they were under their mama they would run and grab sprigs of greenery and run back under her even in their first few days. Do you see if they prefer one versus the other? Seems they are leaving the clover for last. Subscribed.
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 6 лет назад
Carlota Chmielewski Thank you, I still give them clover, dandelion, curly dock, and chick weed and they eat it all up. I don't see any preference that they might have. But my chicks never had pasty butt because of the good probiotics they eat. Their poop was always firm. Chicks get pasty but when their gut flora is messed up and the poop is more liquid and sticks to their rear ends.

I would feed them organic chick starter feed with some greens from around your property. I would wait to feed them worms or treats like meal worms or soldier fly larvae until they are about 4 weeks old. I've never feed them sunflower microgreens but try to memic what they would eat in nature, small seeds, greens, small bugs and small rocks for there gizzards to help them digest better. They do sell chick grit which is smaller than regular grit. Hope this helps.

What kind of food do you have in your feeder? My son is helping to raise the chicks as a homeschool project and I was hoping to let him make their ‘feed’ from scratch with as few ingredients as possible. What are your thoughts on flax seeds (do those need to be ground up prior to feeding them to new hatchlings) - should baby chicks eat this?
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 3 года назад
I give them organic chick starter crumble that I buy from tractor supply. That would be the best for them because it's formulated for their needs. I have never fed them flax before but if you do, best to grind it just before you feed it to them so it won't go rancid. But after about a week you can give them organic chicken scratch as a treat, you can also buy from tractor supply.
