Nice to see growing feijoas growing over there! I am from Argentina, and I planted 3 feijoas 2 years ago not sure which variety it is (recently here we plant feijoas for consumption again, in the past during the colonial settlement of the Spanish it was in every house besides lack of variety of fruits specialy in autumn, but then with european Immigration was left) . Today walking around in the middle of reserved area I found 2 wild large feijoas trees when I pick up the fruits I realized the peel is quite thicker! Now I let them mature a bit more how the wild feijoas taste!
first heard of feijoa from your video, and now i am hooked on the idea of having my own trees. thanks for showing us all these great fruits and how you care for them. awesome work!
found someone who loves woodchips, uses bamboo stakes, and distinguishes between hemispheres 🤓 great vid and A+ for starting so young. you'll have years of great food, and spending time outside. well done Mate! i subscribed!
My son gave me 3 feijoa small plants that have now established themselves in my garden. They look ok so far it’s been about 7 months and they are looking ok so far in the middle of winter 🤞
Willie Watson (The NZ cricketer) used to have a tree in his front yard that his old man used to let us pick from on our way home from school, they were the best. I'd never seen them here in Australia until recently and my eye's lit up, lol. Most of my Aussie mates had never seen, heard or tasted them before. Certainly one of those unique tasting fruits
Mines is about 8 feet tall, shaped like a mushroom, and it's a very resilient plant. I need to add compost and fertilizer so the fruit grows larger. I currently have 4 types of Guavas. This one, a "Strawberry guava plant, and 2 others I'm not exactly sure what they are but one will grow softball size fruit.
Our feijoas are in an unheated greenhouse. They started producing fruit three years ago and what's interesting to me is that they are flowering earlier each year. The resulting fruit seemed to be ripening earlier and tasting better each year, as well.
W o w! Thanks! I love mulching but have never seen such a great demo of why and how it’s so good! I planted a feijoa a few years ago, maybe four? First year two flowers beautiful but no fruit. Second and third years more flowers and last year (year 3) two fruit….that dropped off early! Grr! Btw I am a retired Brit living northern Portugal and had never tasted a feijoa! This spring….dozens of flowers! So very pretty, and I’d keep them for the flowers alone! Then…our spring was terrible and it rained. Heavily. All the time. We thought we’d lost the fruits. But no much later we noticed a couple! Fingers crossed 🤞 and now, lo and behold it’s apparent there are quite a number out there and they are now falling off ready! I tried the first one. Hm. Odd…tried the second and wow! Super love it! I’d been told they were guava like and I adore them…so now I’m very happy with my feijoas! I think I should be trimming them back a bit to keep them sort of 5ft tall and airy. Not sure when I should be doing that..I now need to mulch more in the spring and…find a sheep..or at least it’s dropping. Hmm perhaps my friend’s rabbit droppings in their bedding would be ok? Thanks so much Mr Kiwi Grower! Very useful info! 🇵🇹
Really informative. Just planted a couple in Liverpool UK in our little urban orchard. These feel exotic. Never heard of them until a couple of months ago. Excited😊
Hi , I have some young trees that are a few years old that have not done much and are a bit woody, would you prune them back a bit to get new growth or just add more mulch ? Also 2 have been eaten by sheep and not many leaves, would you pull out and replace or will they come back Okay ? Any help or advise appreciated
Wow I only had 3 feijoa trees and I had so many feijoas I didn't know what to do with them. I hope you will have an outlet for your surplus fruit. Some fruit is better to eat with skin than others. I found the Unique a bit too coarse, but Apollo and Mammoth were much better.
Mulch makes a big difference in the dry subtropics too. Whenever I talk to a kiwi and they find out I grow fruit trees the first thing they ask about is feijoas. Kiwis are crazy for them here.
I am in England and have a lovely bushy feijoa which has grown beautifully for about three years but has never flowered and fruited. It is perhaps too cold for this although it is in a sheltered place.
We call them pineapple guava here in the states. It really is an underrated fruit that needs more love. Sweet, pungent, mildly spicy, minty, tart skin... Just an all around good fruit.😅
Thanks mate, awesome tips. Especially appreciative of your to remove fruit or not comparison as I would of just automatically removed but will happily keep on next year when my younger grafted feijoa start to fruit I saw them being sold at markets 2 for $6 imported from your homeland
Far out that's pricey! With the comparison, perhaps removing some fruit would benefit if the tree sets a huge amount for the size of the tree, but yea I was surprised the growth continued fine
How are you bro I am from India I am also a farmer I watched your video. Do a great job Your farm and the fruits of your farm are very good Best of luck bro
I got unnamed variety (from seeding) in a 1 gallon bucket (probably 1 year old) last fall, and it grew pretty good over summer, of course no flowers or fruit yet. and today got another small tree of Takaka variety for 40usd! bigger ones are going for 90, 120 and 230$ I think I’ll get some more of the smaller ones and plant them in pairs unnamed-named variety so they help each other grow. hopefully they’ll catch up in a year or two to those big ones they sell.
Too right mate... I also eat kiwi fruit skin and all. My mates think I'm mad. I'm putting in a couple soon and noted your comments on watering and wonder what your annual rainfall is. I live outback and we get 14 inches in a good year.
Funny. The comment of planting on the northern side for full sun slapped me across the face that you are on the southern hemisphere. So used to the advice to plant on the south side for full sun. :)
learnt the size smaller/growing faster than larger about 50 years ago when establishing my first garden. After 2 years smaller trees had outstripped the larger by about 3 times and after 5 years the difference was even greater I think they settle into their new home much better, not such a shock especially as trees were going from planter mix to a very clay based soil
Hi there. I'm new to growing feijoa I was wondering if there was something I can do to help my tree become more bushy? Any tips and or advice will help at this point I'm so desperate lol. Looking at my tree now and comparing to your trees, mine looks pretty neglected. I wanted to help this tree flourish before it started to flower. Thanks! Love your channel btw!!! Happy growing 😊
Love them feijoas. I have 6 varieties including 4 unique plants. The unique outfruits them all by a long shot. Does anyone have tips for winter when the leaves get all dark and blotchy. Ive tried a generic copper spray to no real effect. Thanks and thanks for the vid
Do you recommand to prune feijoas from early on (first or second year) to stimulate full bushes to form together a wind shield or a hedge for privacy (but still let it grow freely/natural way)?
I wonder if they can be grown in containers in colder climates. Our summers are reasonably warm, but winter gets down to -20C or even -25C or colder. However, my garage is warmer (around -10C to 5C in winter) and my basement cellar is even warmer (5-10C, but no windows).
Thank you for your wonderful video's and the information! I still have one question. Did you try to propagate the feijoa? I bought one tree with the idea to make more myself. Do cuttings work well?
Im in the Dallas,Texas area and have a healthy looking plant thats been in ground for a few years. I dont get any flowers at all. Its disappointing. Im going to try mulching, but what else should I do? Any specific fertilizer? Do I need another plant? We had a very wet Spring, and Summer has had a lot of 100° days already. Thanks!

So beautiful your video, the countryside is gorgeous. Where is here your garden Sir? In Vietnam, we have a lot of guavas but we don't have this kind of guava. I wish i can have it for my garden! 😄
How many main branches should a pineapple guava have? I just bought one and planted it. It has three main branches. I think I should probably cut one. And remove some lower branches or leave it? Can I send you pics for help? 😅
Have had tree now going into it 7th year. Its a big tree. Had flowers this year.,will we get friut? Has a 2nd tree near the first for 3 years. No friut as yet. Queensland has had very wet year so thinking might get friut in April??
Hey love the teal color themed but also consider building a treehouse over just a house that tears down the forest. Trees should be building blocks no tearing blocks. It can be funky and swirlyio just needs a bit of adjusting imagination and blueprinting and there we go and inventive you might get more followers because your not just helping humanity but your helping the World. We are not only making channels grow but It inspire others to experiment and RU-vid Channels will grow when we choose to help the world 2 ways in one stone. Building a tree house and putting gardens in it. It can maybe make new species
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment. The practicalities of that type of thing with getting finances approved with a bank would have been not possible. However, note the cladding is not timber, it’s actually cement fibre. The only timber involved in the build is the framing, all of which is FSC approved timber meaning it’s from a sustainable source.
@@TheKiwiGrower okydoke I just want to inspire others that are watching your channel. Inspire them to be doing new things and such like that. And loving the forest
@@TheKiwiGrower I love what you guys are doing of not using so much timber I just want to insper you or others that are watching to think outside The box of what is "normal." But just want to continue the love of the forest all around of how to be use it and not abuse it. But yeah continue 🙂
Hi Caleb, where do you live? I heard that Feijoa may not fruit unless they get chill hours. Do you get chill hours? I live in hawaii and hope mine will fruit. Thanks!
Are you planning to prune them? I have one tree and planning to purchase another to help with pollination. This tree here has been with me for 2 years, purchased at a nursery, but has not produced. Thanks for the awesome tips.
