FELIX THE CAT - JAPANICKY
Felix can't afford to get in to the theatre so he makes a hole in the wall to peep through. There are two wrestlers. A small Japanese mans overthrows an enormous opponent. Inspired, Felix ties a know in a lampost and is chased by a policeman. He tries to karate a goat who head butts him. He lands in a Japanese garden where two Geishas are kneeling. Inside a hut another Geisha kneels. Felix takes a '4' from the calendar and makes a chair for her. He laughs 'Ha Ha Ha' and makes chairs for everyone by using the letter 'h'. An oriental man is angry that everyone everyone is using chairs. He chases Felix who uses an Japanese fan to blow him away. Felix hides by turning himself into Japanese lettering. The man chases him up the tower of a pagoda and they fall off onto a man carrying baskets over a Japanese bridge. Felix uses the obi from a traditional kimono to turn it into a propeller to lift the man into the air. He then places a large nail behind a man in a kimono who sits on it. He angrily turns on Felix who produces a chair. He sits happily. Felix makes him a table and they both sit happily drinking tea.

Man, watching a Felix the Cat cartoon is like watching the playthrough of a Point and Click Adventure. Going around, attempting to solve one unusual problem at a time, and you never know what kind of silly cartoonish solution is waiting to resolve it.

This short gives an interesting glimpse of how the west on the figure of the Americans probably think was Japan and it's culture at the time(or at least the creators of the shorts), kinda of a mix of asian cultures, mostly Chinese, it interest me if the prejudice in the cartoon, comes from how fast information could be received and how much easy was it access, or even pre conceived notions from maybe, magazines or books and other medium, very interesting.
@Based_Face
@Based_Face 3 месяца назад
I'm sure all of those things played a factor in how Asian culture was portrayed in this cartoon, the hairstyles and kimono are clearly Japanese, i think they knew the target audience would be children so they refrained from making it historically accurate.

I'm watching these to see how Felix differs from early Mickey, and I think a major difference is Felix is clever, usually plans out his moves, while Mickey is more spontaneous, going with whatever shows up at the moment.

@@hussien04 I guess myself..I just assumed it would be racist because, well, it was made in the 1920s, and it's cartoon about Japanese people that was created by white people, and most of the American cartoons at the time depicted Japanese people as being idiots, this one's a bit different, though..Inleast they don't have buck teeth or slim eyes, or silly names, and at least they don't sound like idiots.
@goojo173
@goojo173 Год назад
@@klove3368 Because WWII hadn’t hit yet. The reason Americans depicted the Japanese so unflatteringly was due to propaganda efforts to get the American public to buy war bonds. People back then weren’t going around being extremely racist all the time when they didn’t need to, and not everyone was racist. People weren’t very different back then. See the Krazy Kat comic for proof of that. Non-binary characters and potentially gay relationships in a comic from 1917. Say what you will about overaceptance today, weird people, racism, anti-racism, sexual weirdness, and cultural revisionist bullshit has always existed.
