Is it possible to make a hand wheel without a casting? On this episode I show you how I make a hand wheel for my live steam locomotive from scratch using a benchtop lathe and milling machine along with a vertex 6" 150mm rotary table.
The Fell Engine Project follows the construction my first live steam locomotive a 1:12 scale, 3.5" gauge locomotive from scratch using my own drawings.
The locomotive being built is modelled on the NZR H Class which operated on the Rimutaka Incline, a 1 in 15 average slope line which utilised a centre rail system for additional traction and braking. The longest serving of the H Class locomotives were built in 1876 and operated until 1955

Gloves on a machine tool, thats really the best way to get heavy injured. What you do is very danger, and end at the best case with a lost finger. I, ve seen a lot of theese accidents on lathes, mills, drill presses and some of them died or could never work anymore. Please never, never wear gloves during the work at a machine tool !!! Why i wrote this lines? You have very good content and we all would be very sad if you get injured !!! Best regards

Thanks for your concern much appreciated, I know it’s certainly something to be taken very seriously. The dilemma is do you take the small injuries, back of hands burnt by chips and cut fingers or protect you self from them and have the potential to be tangled in the machine. My past stance has been the later but never wear them at the drill press or when reaching into the lathe for sanding or filing etc, as for the mill my take is never get your hands anywhere near the moving cutters as you will lose a finger regardless in a contact situation. My future plan is to add a chip guard to the lathe hand wheel to deflect chips so this isn’t choice that needs to be made at least on the lathe.

Hello, I am thinking about making a steam locomotive, but i do not know how to make a water gauge or a steam gauge, pls help.
