How can you support the fact identity politics enter 40k lore? Noone complaining is against women but giving in in feminist ideas of forced agendas is a huge mistake. Kesha's current blood games plan took 3 years, and her monologue notes that if the cyclone missile were delivered it would *in theory* detonate. She *wants* to achieve her victory in the blood games, not kill the emperor. Because it is the duty of all Custodes undergoing the blood games to come as close to being able to kill the emperor as possible. I'd encourage reading the story, not someone's summary. I also note I was actually wrong about the fate of the humans. Only the ship master would be effectively killed - turned into a servitor. The rest were merely punished before being returned to duty.

What's funny is that when I was initially reading that short story, I was assuming it was going to turn out that the 'she' was actually a Callidus assassin that was working for a custodes. That way they could actually remove and replace some custodes without having to kill them. Which makes much more sense in the long run. Imagine a shield captain 'hunting down would be assasins' with his squad only to lead them in ambush so he could replace them with imposters. He could even use the callidus to replace himself to test if he could fool his subordinates. Beyond those types of tricks, how in the eff can a custodes, even with out the armor and weapons hope to move around without being noticed.

I think the disclusion of woman custodes was just as lazy. There was never a good reason for it, so theres no real reason to make a big deal about changing it in my opinion.

I think though the Sisters of Silence should still be their own thing, yes they are all women but that's not like the main identifying trait of their group? Like I dunno that they should be turned into custodes, I think that would end up removing an interesting group needlessly. The emperor saw custodes as his companions he calls them as such and values their ideas. I'd imagine at the very least he'd sterilize his custodes of they'd be of both sexes just to keep them from out breeding humans.

They would have to go back to thousands of books, thousands of other storylines and change it all. That is a ton of work If you want to change the lore that has been like that for 30 years, sure okay, but you’ll have to do the work, a big overhaul, which GW did not do. The old lore and the new dont really even clash too much, in my opinion. It all depends on how they're written and from whose perspective. Factions can easily be multi faceted which is whats great about 40k. From the point of view of the average Imperial citizen, the necrons are exactly how the old lore described them. Mindless eldrich killing machines that came from nowhere with seemingly no obvious motive. The orks are a good example. They're normally goofy comic relief. However, in some books they're depicted them as the horrifying monsters they actually are.

No other lore change has just had one of the biggest novel series ever that people have followed for 20 years though where that faction were featured heavily front and centre. The squats. Didn't exist in an era where GW had hard lore. Disappeared for 20 years and everyone accepted they were coming back with a face lift. People have litrally invested in some cases thousands following the horus heresy and taking it seriously. And with the wave of a magic wand. They've been shown, ah, that can all change with a snap of my fingers if it suits the way I feel the wind is blowing. I don't really feel the two are the same thing. I said it in another comment. We can't have it both ways, that this hobby garners such widespread appeal and investment from fans. My main armies are Daughters of Khaine and a custom female Space Marines chapter (who are mostly just SM with helmets but some occasional headswaps) which I'm getting a lot of flag for. I've always like the Sisters of Silence but that's not a full army & I don't enjoy male miniatures that much. Now I'm completely hyped, I love the character Kesh (loving Morathi was what made me start DoK and for me into WH/AoS) and yes, now I'm going to have a glorious golden banana army. I think people should be allowed to make their minis any gender they want within the lore and not be faction-locked into Sororitas or something.

Every so often they'll accompany Custodes but otherwise operate independently as Imperial Agents either in operating the Black Ship fleets or hunting down dangerous psychic entities. There really isn't a reason there can't be both Female custodes and Sisters of Silence because they're two completely different things. I agree that GW could have handled their introduction much better by saying something like "After the Heresy, Custodes were pulled from Terra's nobility regardless of gender" rather than a retroactive "They've always been here", but nothing else about the lore changed except that every now and then, you might call a Custodes "she" instead of "he"

Note SoS and Custodes are apart of a loose organization called Talons of the Emperor that does include other organizations. Also, the lore change with female custodes does not effect SoS in any meaningful capacity.

Sisters of Silence are their own separate organization, they're just in the Custodes codex since it makes more sense to have them playable in Custodes as opposed to being their own separate army. That said, the codex should have been called "Codex: Talons of the Emperor" in order to better denote that Custodes and Sisters of Silence, while usually but not always working together, are not the same organization.

I agree with you. But that only makes this decision more clearly DEI related than business related. They didn’t change the lore because they announced or showcased new female custodes models. They added them into the lore without actually making them available as toy soldiers for your army. This reeks of Blackrock encouraged DEI.

Custodes are one of the few factions without a bespoke Kill Team set. Maybe that's in the pipeline and they'll have female head options.

@@TheLordofMetroids Oh, good call! That would be an excellent place to do it. As for headswaps vs. full models, I look to the Stormcast from AoS, the golden warriors on that side. They have a sizable female minority among the figures--especially the characters--and they are full-body models. They can get away with headswaps on the Votann, who are generally squatty folk in power armor or trench coats, but I really would prefer full female sculpts for Custodes.

100% correct on everything you said, but i disagree with your proposed result part. The "female custodes" has been made to appease Amazon for the new 40k TV series, as they wanted a female character in power armour who was not "lesser" than a Space Marine, so they would not accept SoB or SoS characters and actually wanted a female Space Marine. GW knew the deathsign if they did that, and so instead relented and compromised to a female Custodes.

And I'm using the Dark Heresy timeline anyway, so that's 813m41, this allows me to avoid the primarus, which are fine, I just don't like them, and custodes ladies doesn't exactly contradict the lore in the first place so... On the very very off chance my inquisitor warbands should encounter some of the companions of the big E then I guess it won't be a total boys club.

That sounds incredibly cool, I love the Astra Militarum because it allows me to pretty much throw any kind of kitbashed minis and make up lore, they don't even need to be consistent because it's confirmed sometimes differents cultures have to be put in the same squad due to the lethality, so you can have anything as long as they're just little guys

@@ClemiHW I got a lot of milage out of the 3e Guard codex regiment generator, and I love the TTRPG Dark Heresy so it was really really awesome when Only War came out and had essentially the same regiment builder but for making your guardsmen player characters. I'm with you, guard is probably favorite outside of dark eldar, cos there's just so much you can do with them. I really like INQ28 which is a brilliant fan made game that sort of combines Inquisitor with Dark Heresy, and one of the big things there is the kitbashing, so I wanna do some WW2 looking troops and have the homeworld be a place with a (ahem) world war going on, which gives me the excuse to model some of the monsters from return to castle Wolfenstein, and I reckon a rogue Inquisitor is behind all the necromancy and mad science stuff, so those are the "not Germans" and my other minis are red army so they could be straight up Valahallans or I'm prolly gonna do something a little different with them. The battle of Kruggrad/Krugelstadh awaits!

Why though? They not every minor sub-faction needs to be fleshed out. It's arguable that GW already have too many factions on the go right now. It makes balancing the game difficult, and some factions are going years/decades without model updates while others are getting them regularly.

The issue is that ABD did not create the Custodes. He might have been the one writing when they became a playable faction, but that doesn't give him carte blanche to change things around. As a change, it does nothing to make the universe better. You know what would have been a change with tangible benefits? Adding new SoS units and giving them some expanded lore.

That’s not it . The writers at the start had a game but no lore they all sat together to think about what the story would be and Bowden has always wanted them to include female custodes . I have a female headswap on my blade champ that’s a 3d scan and print of my daughter. She is into 40k now and loves custodes and I love that for her . The writers at least a good amount wanted this change it was the higher ups at GW that blocked it now that they retired or left they can go their own way . Plus retcons happen all the time did you read the end and the death ? I think it’s a great idea and with my own daughter wanting to learn the game I have been teaching her with my Dark Angel army against my Custodes . I have over 200 warhammer gooks on Audible she can listen to when she likes . This has inspired my daughter to get more into it weirdly but for that I’m grateful. Just because ADB didn’t make up the custodes doesn’t mean he can’t have opinions on the way the story goes . All these writers stand on each others work to build a story . They all have their own opinions same way the public does . Everyone I’ve talked to at my GW store and game club hasn’t cared .

@@Zayamad When the Custodes were first playable back in 1st edition (40KRT page 139) there is no mention of them all being male, their uniform colour was black, they were part of the priesthood and not considered the Emperor's most powerful warriors since that was the Imperial Space Marines (40KRT page 153)

@ZiGGi03 I'm not mad, I'm disappointed that people think this change is actually good for the lore of 40k. There is nothing wrong with a couple of factions being male only. This change does not make the Custodes better or really add anything to them. It does, however, come in place of any number of other changes that would have been more beneficial. The Sisters of Silence could have used some new models and expansion of their lore. There are ranges that are incomplete or haven't been updated in many years. The Custodes vehicles are all Forgeworld and should be converted to plastic. None of the Custodes detachments benefit or focus on vehicles in any way. In addition, they don't even have the guts to just say they retconned this in. ADB was also told no when he wanted Female Custodes. The thing is, if you kitbash and homebrew your own army with female Custodes, no one will care. I run Space Marines as Iron Warrior renegades, even though Iron Warriors wouldn't have Primaris Units. I just like the Iron Warriors as a legion and I don't feel the current CSM setup allows you to run IW as free of demonic influence as you should be able to. Homebrew whatever you want, it's when they trample over lore roughshod and then refuse to engage with people who question it that people get upset.

The existence of the Horus Heresy is a retcon. As are orcs being fungus. Marines not just being normal sized guys. Marines not being camouflage anymore , marines not using shuriken catapults any more, eldar not using land raiders anymore, Necron existing, Tau existing, etc. There's been so many things that GW just chucked in that people love now, and think of cannon.
