This is Royal Albert Hall 1970, and Bonham used a single bass drum pedal.

Bonzo led with his left hand, left right foot and he DID NOT use a double bass pedal. He used a standard pedal. His foot speed and coordination were incredible along with power and finesse. To really hear how good Bonzo was listen to when the Levee breaks.

That was just a tiny bit of the solo. The bits you missed contained some really great snare drum technique. He could play really loose and precise, and brilliant dynamics and smoothness.

Yes! His accenting on the snare was precision master craft rarely seen or heard.

By the way he had a double bass for about 5 Seconds until Jimmy Page and Robert Plant took it away

@@dan1216 Robert might have some help don't forget about Peter Grant and Richard Cole. He didn't need a double Bass, didn't need sticks didn't need a 40 piece drum set all he needed was a bricklayers mentality

I heard, not 100% sure but his speed king pedal he modified it with chain instead of leather or the metal hook but I quit using the speed king pedal because it became just two easy and fun to overplay with it! I use the DW 9002 double pedal as my go to but it’s just personal preference

This is the very end of the solo, you miss most of the entire beefy technical stuff. Also, royal Albert hall, 1970. Not MSG 73

Have you ever heard of Buddy Rich ? I recommend Buddy's Solo From the Hague ! He 's recognized as the greatest drummer ever ! One of John Bonham 's heroes.

It might seem not so complicated, but if you think about in the 1970s, nobody else was doing it yet. Which is why he has been ranked as the best drummer in the history of music.

Another thing that Bonzo did that was so freaking awesome and made Led Zeppelin sound so different was he was able to follow Jimmy page and get in with the guitar riffs instead of just doing four/four with John Paul Jones in the bass riffs.

A lot of the triplet fills and solo parts lead with a left hand hit on the high tom on the one count and sometimes stays there, which frees the right hand up for more variety, and gives a totally different feel. Dave Grohl started doing this quite a bit with Them Crooked Vultures and it melts the faces off the front row.

For my money, Bonzo (and all of Led Zeppelin) were pretty sloppy. They played with so much feeling that it didn’t matter though. Maybe it was just an artifact of the era; I’ve heard the same slop from Ronnie Tutt on the live Elvis stuff. But it was always close enough that your brain can just interpret what they meant and then be blown away.
