Female Rappers Aren't Evolving 

I agree. I feel like with mainstream female rap it’s a single’s game. I call it the ‘Flo Rida effect’ they all just release party songs that will only last a few months then fizzle out. Expect for Megan, they don’t care putting out fully bodies of work but singles and it’s a dangerous game. I don’t see ice spice and saweetie lasting musically, cuz the talent isn’t there. Megan, needs to use new producers and writers cuz her music has been sounding the same for yearssssss. She doesn’t really like to mix it up and her fans aren’t honest with her which isn’t helping her. She has the potential to be WAYYYY bigger if she evolved her sound and make it more palatable but she won’t. Shout out to Rhapsody her recent album was amazing🎉

I feel theres a reason why Doja and Nicki are still killing it. The flows change, production changes, and the music doesn't suffer for it. Risks are being taken, and it's paying off because it's a change. I really wish Deochii and Flo Milli will get the change to get boosted into the spotlight like Ice has. They have proven to change it up and give goof music.

I feel like Megan is the only one with potential. I feel like rock rap with Megan will suit her. Because Megan is very alternative and I feel like she needs to express that in her music. And the only person that was up was Doja Cat because Doja Cat is a very diverse artist but she fell off due to her behavior.

Doechii is art and different. However, the only rap girlies really selling are Doja and Nicki.

i think in Megan’s case, she gave us something to hold us over until she drops the album. I feel like BOA is just a fun megan-style song i don’t think her album will all sound like this but i understand the criticism (despite loving the song) cannot say the same for the rest

Flo Milli's newest album really killed me. Her first two projects were bold and in your face and explored different sounds. The singles leading up to Fine Ho Stay were promising - Fruit Loop, Chocolate Rain, BGC, and Never Lose Me. But then to find that the first three weren't on the album and it pivoted to a bunch of melodic songs replicating Never Lose Me - I was so disappointed. Tierra Whack, Doechii, and JT are really my faves right now because they really are making art - it seems like they don't care too much about a tik tok hit (even though JT got it with Okay). I listen to them and I feel a genuineness with the craft.

My biggest issue with Meg is she keeps teasing that she's going back to Tina Snow and she is with the IMAGERY but she isn't consistently dropping songs in the lane of that character. HISS was 100% Tina Snow so I'm hoping we get more of that with this album. Before HISS we had Ungrateful and maybe you could count Plan B and Shots Fired because of her delivery style and the overall tone of the production.

I feel like Meg can evolve. She not so arrogant that she can't hear the feedback and change. I loved the MV for "Boa" I'm still pulling for her.

Sexy Red is the final boss. Once her spark fizzles out, no new heaux is coming along to make a big splash. I just can't see it.

I would recommend everyone here to check out Woke Up by XG. They were are a Japanese girl group that were trained for about 7 years before debuted in 2022. They can dance, sing R&B, and rap. They were inspired by OG artists like TLC. They even did a cover on TLC Scrub. Besides their main song, they often cover songs of other artists, release mixtapes, make dance choreography videos. They are an underrated group.

While I’m always open to listen to a good critique, I feel like this topic is divisive. Most people don’t even listen to an artist’s full discography, only the mainstream cuts or what’s made popular. Also we only put pressure on women in music (especially rap) to switch up their sound and experiment while men in hip hop have been rapping about the same topics and having the same sound for decades. Also every woman doesn’t have to be an animated rapper like Doja or Doechii .If everyone went that route then people would be saying they all sound alike. I like that Meg, Latto and Glorilla rap with their southern accents and have their own style. We have to give people time to grown and develop. We don’t know what setbacks they deal with behind closed doors.

Good evening: Female rap is just in one particular lane. Everything is just the exact same. I'm truly not surprised though, lately it seems like they think this is good music. It's actually sad cuz how they plan to get better & earn money. They setting a horrible reputation for themselves. Boa sounds like a song you heard in like 2018, Swatiee song sounds like a songz you'd hear in Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Chile's or the mall. Ice Spice sounds just horrible, at least to me. Im glad I went back to 00's & 90's. That era had diversity. Not 1 early 00's or 90's rapper sounded the same. They dishing us repetitive music. Why..??

It's interesting that you didn't bring up Doechii, Tierra Whack, Rico Nasty, Flyana Boss, Lil Simz, and so many other women outside of the U.S. from South America to Africa that are evolving and bringing some unique artistry to the game. Your critique is woefully limited to mainstream artists, so either you are limited in what you listen to or you're making a blanket statement about MAINSTREAM female rappers only. The indie, underground, and international ones have been evolving, putting out artistic and creative bodies of work for awhile. You just don't know about them and should really explore new people outside of the ones you featured.

I like the clarification of not all the artists sounding the same but the individual artists not growing their artistry. I’ve said that Meg has been through a lot and I think that contributes to her much music being more steady. I hope that with her new album she leans into exploring different sounds that work for her. With Saweetie, I expect her to give us exactly what she gives and I don’t mean that as a slight. I also am comfortable with mediocre music from women rappers because the men in rap been doing it for years with no major pushback lmao

I agree like at this point I need more. I noticed that bars have become a trend like once someone says a good line then everyone drops a song with it like a hashtag. And branding culture is forcing artists into self made boxes which i dont really care for either. Meg is my favorite currently but she keeps saying the same stuff. Imo shes too good for that. I can't believe you went easier on Ice Spice, she's the worst of these cases you showed. She lacks everything, even a personality it seems. I was really excited when I first listened to her but not I can't stand her, all her songs sound exactly the same, the videos are awful, she has 0 stage presence, dancing is mid and is even really rude. Her latest release Phat Butt was the most boring song I've ever heard, is not even bad, is just so boring is unbereable (and it seems there was almost no budget for the video).

I hardly listen to Megan’s songs, but I feel disappointed in her song, Hot Otaku Girl. The lyrics feel so lacking. Even though I recognize her to be an anime fan, I feel like her references to JJK and Naruto is not enough. These are not the only anime that female otakus like. I kind of expect the song to be about being an otaku girl, but she made it all about dealing with haters. I wish she could have expanded the lyrics with more substance. Put in some references to shoujo anime, idols, and BL. Make it something light and fun. The comments are trying to hype up to represent female nerds, specifically black female nerds. Now, I’m not black, but I’m still an otaku. I personally think that the Sexy Anime Boyz sounded more fresh despite being an older song. And it’s a song that pretty much an otaku girl anthem for me.
