Saber National Team Member Khalil Thompson shares a 10-Minute daily footwork routine that you can do at home or any place where you have enough space to move a few steps and make a lunge.
Tim Morehouse Fencing Club’s “At Home Footwork Challenge” is encouraging our members and participants to do an extra 10-minutes of footwork each day.
Champions Habit: A Champion always does a little extra on their own.
It is the small extra daily habits that can often have a huge impact and separate the best from the rest. This challenge epitomizes that champions value. If you take a video or short picture of yourself doing our workout, tag us on Instagram with the hashtag #AtHomeFootworkChallenge
We will have a new routine and video each week from champion fencers with exercises that you can do at home.

Thank you. This is a great workout. Let's you know what type of shape you're in while improving leg strength, explosion and coordination. By the way, on the squat lunge, if you add a snap at the end of your forward hand, you could develop a nasty jabber-cut.

I started fencing 3 months ago and I just came across this video. Is this footwork recomended for beginners or more advanced fencers? As a sugestion, please, could you add a written summary of the routines executed in the video decription? I think that would help.

Could this workout be made ever harder if we added a small dumbbell to the sword hand? I've always thought that would add a nice bit of resistance to the movement patterns, but not sure if it would throw off body mechanics too much...

What angle should the backfoot be to minimize the risk of tearing the meniscus and the cruciate ligament? Is 90 degree better than 45 or 70 or etc.?

Whatever is natural and suits your body.

Just a question, would it be safe to also do these exercises on concrete (e.g. garage)?
@iainmcclure416

No way of avoiding the fact: some of these exercises are high impact. If you have an injury / weakness that is vulnerable, take it easy on very hard surfaces. Build slowly. I'm recovering from a lumbar stress fracture partly caused by intense plyometrics on concrete during lockdown.

It should be safe as long as your technique stays correct. But play it by ear. Concrete can be either too slick or too grippy and both can cause injuries it your aren't careful. But it should be OK if you're cautious

When doing the toe taps are you lifting the entire foot off the ground ? Thanks
@Timmorehousefencing
@Timmorehousefencing 3 года назад
Yes. In this exercise picking the feet up off the ground. In other activities we do heel to to toe which you can use as a variation also in this exercise. Thanks for the questions!
