I really like the pacing of this video and the way you quickly mix the playing of both so you can really hear the differences. (I personally think the Jag has the edge on tone, but it’s a tough call. Seems more versatile.)

Have a custom HH Jazzmaster (I know it's blasphemous) that I threw Fralin Unbuckers, coil split wiring, locking tuners and a Mastery bridge/tremelo in. It's absolutely incredible to listen to/play with very stable tuning. The 36th Anniversary PAF/Super Distortion pickup set in the Cobain Jaguar are really good too.🤘

Great comparison! I like them both... the JM seems a little warmer and fuller sounding at times whereas the Jaguar can sound more trebly/sharper almost more wiry sounding if that makes sense. I find the short scale length of the Jaguar takes some getting used to. I bought the Squier 70s CV in Daphne Blue. With 9 Guage strings on it it was hard to play and doing bends on the high E string could cause it to want to come up and off past the edge of the fretboard. Had my buddy who's a real good tech and guitar builder give it a good set up (it needed it but for a sub $400 guitar I'm not surprised) and put 10s on it. Wasn't ready to jump to 11 Guage strings. It definitely has its own feel but nothing you can't get used to. I like it because it's different and unique. It has its own voice and it's cool looking and super comfy to play sitting down. I do feel it's more challenging to play than say my Gibson SG and it does force you to play differently, maybe more effort but I think that can be a good thing. Haven't played a nice JM yet but I know I would like it's 25.5" scale length.

I have Jaguar American Original 60s and American Jazzmaster Pro 2 and both are too awesome. Playing Jaguar more but Jazzmaster still feels to have still much to explore. Nicely different guitars. Jaguar more basic to play, riffs sound superb. Jazzmaster feel bit more sensitive to sound good. Chords sound massive and clean around 12th bar too. No issues with tuning. Perfect tremolo systems. But had to flip 2 screws in Jaguar to avoid E-strings to break. Liking both more than Stratocaster (the newest american ultra) which is still awesome., but quite clangy(?). Jaguar and Jazzmaster have more depth.

The bridge is not a design flaw. With sufficiently high string-saddle friction (string tension, string break angle) tuning is usually rock solid. Mustang-style replacement bridges address the strings sometimes popping out of the shallow string grooves slots in the vintage-style bridge with heavier playing. You mention the Cobain jag - it has mods (tuneomatic bridge etc) that reflect an earlier era when guitar techs did not understand how to set up the rocking bridge properly.

I think I’d prefer a Jag with the shorter scale length. I love JM pickups and the tone, but Jag sounds cool and is much easier to play. I have short fingers and am disabled with chronic pain, so I’d prefer not fighting to play a JM. Ideally, I’d like a short scale JM if I had the option. 🤓 👍🏻

As far as tuning issues, I’m not sure where that’s coming from? I have a bunch of offsets and they don’t have any more tuning issues compared to any other guitars I own. Additionally, the controls really aren’t complicated at all, it baffles me how some may think that…they’re very easy once you spend a little bit of time with these guitars. I have a Johnny Marr Jag that I love, but generally Jags don’t have as much sustain and a are more plinky sounding by nature vs. a Jazzmaster. I find Jazzmasters more versatile than Jags, but a lot of that comes down to the player and individual styles.Ripping the rhythm circuit out is a big no no if you’re an offset traditionalist as many offset players are. It’s nice to have the option for more mellow sonic excursions. It can also be very useful for on/off sonic stutters and also to turn the volume off on the guitar with a flick of a switch.

If you like shorter scale lengths (like the Mustang) or super tight sounding strat-like pickups in a different offset package, then go for Jaguar. If you want a whole different “thing”- or, i.e., something as far or farther apart to a strat than a tele is to a strat- or otherwise just like the classic fender scale length w/ an offset body, then go for Jazzmaster. I personally think the average Fender guitar player should get to know their teles, strats, and jazzmasters… b/c they all offer different things. The Jazzmaster was sadly overlooked for a long time, but when you’ve played one for awhile and are familiar with the other two earlier Fenders, you can kinda feel the evolution or progression with your hands and ears. So- in other words- if you already like teles just as much as strats for how they’re different, I especially would recommend trying out a Jazzmaster.

I have a CV and Player Jags. They are really great guitars. The CV has the wacky traditional controls and is just great for a vintage early-60s jangle. The Player HS is much easier to use and is really a smaller and simpler Strat that works really well.

Let me be the cork sniffer to show up in the comments: the bridge is quite easy to address with replacement bridges and a quick set up. I agree that this should knock a few points off on both of them, but don't let this deter people from buying either. I have one of each, and they're so much fun to play. I play my Jag the most. Also, it's funny that you mentioned both models but with paired down controls: that literally was the American Pro 1 run of both of these guitars. Jon, you should seriously check out those on the used market, they will make you rethink your opinion on both models.

I mean the jaguar is confusing kinda but once you watch like a 5 minute video on RU-vid explaining it’s easy. As for the jazzmaster it’s genuinely not confusing at all, the switch is up? You’re in rhythm. The switch is down? You’re in lead. Lead circuit is a traditional electric guitar controls. Rhythm circuit is just the neck pickup with tone dampener to give it a more mellow, darker tone and it’s controlled by two roller pots, they’re pots just like in the lead but they’re roller instead of twist. Also I understand not using the rhythm circuit but there’s a couple unique ways to use it. I have a JM Jazzmaster and they come stock with what amounts to p90s not traditional jazzmaster pickups so I put a SD antiquity in the bridge and left the JM in the neck and now I barely use the pickup selector, if I want a bright bell-like jazzmaster tone I stay on the bridge, if I want something a bit louder, hotter and importantly with fuzz, I’ll just flip up to the rhythm and get a really good fuzzy tone. You can also rewire the whole rhythm circuit to do other things, it’s really fun and unique. Like you can make it a phase switcher and use the roller pots as pots for the neck and use the lead pots for the bridge, akin to Gibson

Thanks for the kind compliments. This particular backing track is a static minor chord that I am improvising over. I do like to mix a lot of styles - a fusion of jazz, blues, rock, and funk. Here' s some songs I'd check out if you haven't: Miles Davis "So What" Grant Green "Flood in Franklin Park" Lou Donaldson "Snake Bone" Wayne Shorter "Adams Apple" Rollong Stones "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" around 3m mark You'd probably really enjoy 60s/70s Soul Jazz and Funk. It had a huge influence on Rock at the time too. If you want a roadmap for jamming over a static minor chord, I tend to live in the Dorian mode, using minor pentantonics as the scaffolding and blending in some chromatics, arpeggios, bends etc. I like wide open vamps because you can do a lot with them but I love that sound I described. The most famous example of this is Miles Davis' "So What." Into the 70s jazz evolved away from more complex chord changes to more open static type of vamps which left a ton of room for funky and soulful rhythms which influenced not only jazz but also rock. This was hugely influential on rock as well - If you listen to the Rolling Stones "Can't you Hear Me Knocking" it basically out of nowhere opens up into exactly this kind of static funky Dorian jam at around the 3:00 mark. Thanks for watching and sorry for the book, just thought I'd share!

I only wish that you had played chords and arpeggios on each without effects so we could hear the natural tone. Then it was like Apple A/Orange B, Apple A/Tangerine B, Apple A with Tangerine B actually still playing over Apple A, Fuzzy Apple A with Clean Grapefruit B playing a totally different riff, sigh. I often get the feeling with videos like this that the person decided which guitar they like better and are trying to convince others to like it better also.

These guitars are great but they are designed very poorly Fender refuses to admit to its design flaws and simply fix them once and for all and have a normal functioning guitar out of the box for the consumer like any other of their instruments They need to 1.make the neck pocket properly so no shins are needed. The idea of buying a brand new guitar and needing to remove the neck and insert a shim to address the poor break angle at the bridge is absurd in 2023 2. Figure out the bridge once and for all- if they want it to move with the vibrato bar, ok- then make the damn thing be able to hold the strings in place properly without popping out with using modern gauge strings. This is strongly correlated to addressing the shim issue The constant “oh this is not a design flaw! It’s the way Lord Leo intended (HBTN)” is fine and dandy for Fender fanatics stuck in the 1950s and 1960s (many of whom ironically were not even around them lol), but it’s 2023- fender needs to do better with these guitars as they deserve so much better The Jaguar and Jaguar would be even more popular if they made them better
