I do have to wonder if there are any internal switches to change the character of the fender pedal. Sounded good this time around. I still stand by my original assessment, it's a non-metal heads take on a high gain sound.

That is a perfect description of the fender pedal. I'll see if I can build up the confidence to open it up and look...

I also stand by my earlier assessment, which is that Fender's definition of the Heavy Metal sound is trapped in the early 70's, when the line between Hard Rock and Heavy metal was vague and undefined. The Who, Blue Oyster Cult, even The Beatles got in on competition to make the loudest & heaviest music. Not to mention all this multi-scale, extended range, drop Z tomfoolery is nowhere in Fender's dictionary. Metal as a separate genre that is distinct from Rock IMO did not happen until the late 80s / early 90's with the evolution of Thrash into Black Metal & Death Metal, with the last vestiges of Rock influence disappearing from many bands. Extreme Metal and later Modern Progressive Metal has really stood apart from Rock and is what a lot of younger music fans think of when they think of Metal, either that or the older Traditional Heavy Metal & it's many variations, which are still linked closely to Rock, as much Metal fans may deny it. \m/

@serpentsbane9166 much of the evolution you describe happened in the early 80s. Lines blurred more and more as time went on. I recall there was a time when it was in vogue to "invent" new sub-sub-sub-sub genres, sometimes with every separate song on an album. Long before that happened I just got to the point of if it sounded good to me, I can like it. Other metalheads I knew could spend hours arguing over what band belonged in what genre because of a guitar tone, number of members, bass tone, inclusion or exclusion of synths, the list goes on. Those same folk also wouldn't listen to a new band if they fell into a genre they didn't like. Too tiring to keep up with all that prejudicial nonsense.
