Fender Stratocaster Headstock design true origin. In 1954 Leo Fender introduced his iconic Guitar "The Fender Stratocaster". This is still the most popular Guitar design in the world. A couple of weeks ago I got a Traditional Croatian Guitar for a repair in my Luthier Workshop and this Tambura reminded me on a book that I used to buy 20 years ago were I have read something very interesting about the Stratocaster Headstock design.
I refer to the following books for my quotes and pictures:
* "The Stratocaster Chronicles"
Celebrating 50 years of the Fender Stratocaster
by Tom Wheeler
Distribution: Hal Leonard
* "Faszination Gitarre"
Conny Restle und Christopher Li
Distribution: Nicolai Verlag
Enjoy the first Episode.

Hi Friend, interesting topic about Fender headstocks. Leo was inspired from Paul Bigsby who himself was inspired from violin or double bass headstock shapes. Look closely to a violin and here is where it all began ! Anyway, thank you for this bright video and see you soon...

There is some truth to what Nik is saying here. But I think if you are a guitar enthusiast it is really important to read "The Birth of Loud" because Leo Fender, Paul Bigsby and Les Paul were regularly kvetching on designing a production solid body guitar so it is difficult to say who came up with what and when. We do know that Paul Bigsby was what we would call today a boutique builder that introduced a solid body electric with a headstock much like the Croatian headstock before Leo produced the Stratocaster. I would credit Leo Fender with a designing a more modern refinement of the Paul Bigsby headstock. One could also surmise Paul and Leo were both taking cues from the Croatian/Stauffer style headstocks and making vast improvements in the tuners and their orientation.

So my head canon used to be that all the fender headstock shapes (tele, strat, even that 12 string hockey headstock) look like pointy wizard hats but with the tip of the hat drooping (imagine smurf hat but taller). And it even made sense with the guitar names ending with -caster, as in casting spells :P anyways stupid explanation and totally made up but it stuck in my head :) and nice video btw cheers did not know about this instrument before

i'm a big fender fan, but this isn't the whole story. the 1948 bigsby merle travis guitar has a nearly identical headstock to the strat, but obviously leo himself isn't going to admit to ripping it off completely.

Thanks a lot for watching and for your feedback. Yes off course it’s common knowledge that Bigsby used this kind of design before Fender does. There is nothing new about this suposed, "discovery". We from Balkan region understood the origin of the Stratocaster head stock shape ever since Fender made his ow verson of it. By the way, it is not the Croatian designe....it came from the Staufer company in Austria that made those instruments. Balkan regions at that time were under Austro-- Hungarian empire so, it is not surprising that fashions were adopted regionaly. To call it " Croation " invention is not therefore, accurate. ❤
