@@lennybrowntooth5009 1974,1958,1973 are all 18w marshall clones of the watkins dominator ,nicknamed baby bluesbreakers, but they sound completely different more chimey ,less bass etc ,they share the same speakers and looks. the 1961 is the closest marshall to a bassman being a 4x10 combo, peter green used one.
One of the best sounds I've ever gotten was playing a beat to shit ES-125 downtuned and strung with flatwounds through a CRANKED 1966 Princeton. Unreal sound. Come to think of it, that amp sounded really great with an Epiphone 230T Casino too. Maybe it was just a good amp for P90's.
When you consider all the things in both Physics ,Electronics and Acoustics that have to align in order for this to happen ... the lyrics in Mott the Hoople's song "God gave rock and roll to you" seem take on new meaning.
I challenge anyone to name a RU-vid show/channel that captures the sound of mic’d tube amps more accurately than That Pedal Show. Gents, on a consistent basis, the audio quality is truly glorious!
I have slowly realized my Morgan AC40 Deluxe is my best sounding amp. It has all the Vox flavors, but as a Strat guy that EF86, hit with a germanium booster, is harmonic heaven 🎉. It has power scaling and have a 2x12 w Golds. 🎉. Lucky me!😊
This show is everything I love about TPS! Killer guitars, killer amps, exceptionally chosen pedals, inspired playing.... and Dan and Mick with smiles galore from all the incredible tones! ❤🔥
Your next show on cranked amps could be about those amps that are NOT beloved for their overdriven tones. Maybe a Silverface Twin or a Roland JC120. Why don't they work as well? What do you think?
transistor amps (especially class a/b) always sound their worst near their clipping point .that's why home stereos are usually 100 watts so they can work on 10% -20% volume, the jc has the worst on board distortion ever made and hates drive pedals but loves multi effects. the silverface twin is too clean and bright so the breakup is very late, getting rid of the bright cap and having a high gain tube at v1/v2 helps .
@@subjectt.change6599 I'd say the youtube algorithm would basically cancel their channel if the put the words "solid state" in the title of a video about amps. LOL!
Getting the best tones out of the best old tube amps is almost always accomplished by turning the volume to 2pm and turning down the guitar until it's as clean as you need. BB had it right! So much fun every single time.
4:49 This is a ‘56 Bassman, most likely circuit designation 5E6-A, which was quite different from the 5F6-A from ‘58 that everyone fawns over. Closer to something like a Bandmaster than what it would evolve into. Anyway, gotta get that Hiwatt going again. Part 2: Hiwatt, that silver Bassman and the Laney.
They also had 12AY7 tubes in V1 which lowers the gain considerably vs Marshalls copy etc. though a healthy fully roaring Bassman (even a 56) should be louder and gainier. Still, a very lovely bit of pushed air.
@@chrisquinn9104 I have a 5E8-A twin that's essentially the same circuit with a 4 ohm transformer instead of 2 ohm. Definitely does the thing!! Best Fender amp ever made IMO
I'm not even sure I would consider the 5E6-A a "classic"... It's kind of a transitional design. And it's a very different amp than the 5F6-A Bassman that built rock music.
These amps, especially the AC30, sound so good being driven the way they were meant to. I know RU-vid is not the same as being in the room but still, so good. Thanks for this one!
Dan's tone on the Bassman was really sweet. I understand you expected it to get a bit dirty (er), for a light touch and the proper piece of music, it was stellar.
Best video in ages!! Pushing classic amps to the max... Never heard an AC 30 sound so good in a long time. And when MIck Used the Strat's neck pickup in the Marshall at 26:20....Ahhhhhh! And showing how good modern effects sound with the Amps too. This is the good stuff!
Man, those tones were so good that I could get the vibe even through speakers that cost £2 and aren't much bigger than the coin! Excellent work, gents!
Half-through, my takeaways are that turning down the volume on the guitar makes more sense when the amp is shaking the floor, and that the two of you seem very happy.
This is why so many of the great Guitarists didn’t use pedals they all got what they needed with the amp and their guitars and understanding which guitar with which amp a lot to learn here .love the show .
I've grown to really appreciate outdoor gigs because I often use an ac15c1 that can be a little too much in a pub gig but becomes too crunchy and small in an outdoor space- I've been bringing an ac30s1 (single 12 instead of dual speaker) and that thing never gives up.. when the power amp starts to overdrive it's just the most glorious textured sound.. the ac30 in this episode brought me back to that. The clean up dynamic is fantastic, my only issue is certain pronounced mids that can get overboard.. I love the more neutral sound of a fender there.. but can't beat the ac30 in monstrous big power chord saturation.. love it to my core.
THIS!!!!! Playing your deluxe reverb cranked on the experience day was truly cosmic - and this is next level!!! Interesting that one doesn’t care about the usually requisite reverb when one’s cranking a vintage heroic valve amp!!! Ace chaps. Just ace.
Vintage iron, vintage iron!! I’ve been repairing mostly vintage amps for 2 years and I’m totally hooked! Listen to TAVA with Bryan from Soursound as a guest. It gets super nerdy into vintage iron. It’s not the only thing that makes vintage amps great but it’s a big part of it
44:40 The point regarding a natural progression of drives rather than a left field, distinctly different on/of distortion - was really exciting to hear. That’s everything I strive for in a pedalboard. Great stuff today, guys.
For me, these are some of, if not the best tones you've ever had on the channel. Biased as an old amp junkie myself, but there's just nothing else like it!
you two just came alive when the marshall roar happened. the vox was my favourite. please remember we will never be able to afford even one of these amps so recordings like this are heaven for us. MORE MORE MORE please
Has to be the first time ever I preferred the Marshell over a Fender, and that Vox was lovely. Been in a tired funk lately and this video had me playing for an hour straight. Thanks for that it was much needed.
That Vox sound... OMG indeed. And believe it or not, but Dan's Vox combo inspired me to go and order a Kingsley Squire TB preamp, and man what a preamp/pedal that is! I'm nearly 95% there just with the Squire already! Love it!
Respect! I don't know how you guys could do that? I had a 1964 Vox ac30 and if I played it 'full pelt' it was so loud I started to get scared!!! hahaha!
Dude I have multiple AC30's and I run them both cranked and with my 335 I can literally FEEL the air coming from the F Holes on the guitar and it actually tickles my arm. It is absolutely AMAZING! LOL!
The Strat into the AC30 got me! And all along I thought I was a Fender Deluxe Reverb person! Or may be I just need BOTH, AND a padded room, oh, I meant sound proofed LOL. Thank you, gentlemen. 💖🕊️🤘
I was at a small club right in front of the stage recently. 2 guitar players in the band both playing cranked 100W Marshals. I had a few fillings loosen up in my teeth but it was glorious! Wearing ear plugs of course.
I have a cousin who was in a stoner/doom band who insisted on a using a dual rec through a 4x12 and he plays in bars that if they hold 50 people I’d be amazed and every damn time at every damn bar he plays they actually mic up his cab… try sitting through that! The only people whoever came to these shows were family members and friends of course and our fav gig he ever did was the time they didn’t mic the damn thing 😂😂😂😂
Really great video. Loved the real world context in the 2nd half of the video. You were essentially taming the beast. The tones were remarkable. Have a great weekend.
Tweed magic! Love the volume rolled back a bit, and how dynamic and bright these open circuits stay. Really rewards touch, working the volume. If you have the headroom in the amp, there are so many shades of gain. Of course there’s the edge of cave in…but amazing!
Overdrive pedals and cranked amps is every electric guitar players fun time!! I’m finally happy with my rig. All the elements are where I like them. ….. I still bought an overdrive pedal today, just to have fun and enjoy a new sound! For me the skill is in knowing what YOU need. After you master that, everything else is just for fun!
I have a 5E3 handmade amp which I play in the band just as this. Guitar and the amp that's all you need if you are looking for that glorious sounds. This episode is fucking amazing. The Plexi sounded THE SOUND
I just love listening to you guys play. Such good stuff as always! The look on Dan's face when you first started to turn on the Marshall was priceless. Mick never ceases to show how glorious the Strat can be.
I was less taken by the Bassman but the Vox and Marshall cranked were out of this world. How versatile is that Marshall! Why would the Edge dump his vintage AC30 to play through a digital rig? Mind you I heard he called his wife Mrs Putin last week so you know...
I know you guys don't really get into things like the OX that much, but I've been using one in a small studio where cranked mic'd amps aren't always an option and it has allowed me to crank my Magic Brit MK2 AC15 style amp for the drive tones. It's worked out pretty well. Subectively better than a lower volume amp combined with pedal drive for what I was after. I've been perfectly happy with drive pedals into a cleaner amp in the live situation. It's all song and scenario based of course.
Couldn't afford my dream amp , a Fender Bassman just like yours (it sounded beautiful ❤) , so i brought the Fender Deville 1996 and i really love it including the overdrive and the reverb to me it sounds beautiful Contrary to many people thoughts. That Vox sounded killer and that Gibson SG is ❤ I have new neighbours since a week ago , most days they have their music loud playing disco electronic music style then suddenly their music evaporates from the space 😂 as i crank up my Fender Deville 💪 and i think to myself to my neighbours welcome to the neighbourhood 😇
Epic stuff lads. Love your channel, been watching for a few years now, first time commenting. I've got an all original '77 100W Super Lead (non master volume) with matching angled top 4x12 cab (used to have the full stack, but it was just utterly ridiculous, had to sell bottom cab) ... I literally have no way of gigging that thing anymore because sound guys would just laugh at me, it is just insane, loudest amp I have ever heard, but I've owned it for 26 years and won't get rid of it. Keep up the great work boys!
I have four essential foundation amp tones I like to use. Fender black/silver panel for clean to edge of breakup, 60s Marshall for clean to edge of breakup (Yes, really - Marshall for cleaner tones only, in my world), Fender brown panel for cleans, Fender Tweeds for cleans, edge of BU, overdrive, and cranked fuzzy distortion. I like Vox tones but really for sparkling cleans only, because I don’t care for the particular midrange region that pokes out when they are pushed beyond a point.
Thank you leg-ends this was fabulous! I loved Dans 62 LP through the 61 AC30. The Les Paul into the Superbass was an eye opener for sure. The last quarter turn of the volume pot didn’t register on the DB meter but you could feel its effect on the bottom end and compression. The Koss was present!
I know this show was focused on amps-and it was absolutely glorious-but my focus kept drifting to the finish on the Strat . . . It has the most wonderful soft shine, just wow.
Boy I loved all this - yeah that Baseman didn't do it's thing .. guess they are all different - Marshall into a 2x10! Who'd have thunk it? -- genius --- as usual for me, Dan's VOX setup at the end was just incredible - thank you very much
What I actually do is take a JCM800 and crack it to my crunchy rhythm tone with my guitar volume all the way up. Not too much gain. Maybe 11 : 00? For leads I use a DS-1, Big Muff Pi, or a few others. If I want to get cleaner… it’s not hard because there’s not a huge amount of gain happening. Also these days amps have master volume controls. So you don’t have to have the soundguy yelling at you to turn down.
Lovely bunch of amps and cool sounds this episode, cheers guys! The only thing I was missing from the part where you turned the amps up was bringing in the bright channel on the Marshall, which would've probably given you the amount of drive you thought was a bit strange not happening while also making it less bloated sounding. A great watch, nonetheless!
One word: attenuator! I have a Cornell Plexi 45/50 Head (ex Bruce Dickinson, Little Angels) that is crazy loud but using a THD Hotplate I can run the amp almost flat out at home at quiet levels. Sure you don’t get the thump in the chest but you can usable overdriven tones that clean up on the volume knob. I also have an old JCM800 from 1981. During the “clap for carers” nonsense I dragged it into the garden and cranked it wide open much to the amusement of our village neighbours. I could be heard over a mile away (I have video evidence 🙂😂). That was a blast.
I've read on multiple occasions that Duane Allman used a 50-watt Marshall bass amp through a full stack with JBLs while with the Allman Brothers. When I saw him with Derek and the Dominoes he used a Twin with JBLs.
Nice to see the HM1 featured. After the HM2 came out, I didn't expect to see the HM1 here again. (I notice it's all at 2 o'clock, just like the picture on the package it comes in.)
Close to having a crisis; I don't like to think the world has gone backwards, but you guys saved it with Part 2. These amps can still be used & enjoyed, even if you can only cranck them annually 👏🏼👌🏼
As much as we all love pedals here, this video is a great reminder that there's a universe of tones available with just a cranked amp and the guitar's volume knob. What Mike Watt called "jamming econo"! (Although maybe not with vintage gear!)
I have a lot of cool pedals but in the last probably 6 months or so I've literally just played my AC30's completely cranked and also have a Marshall Origin 50 as well and keep it cranked too. I honestly don't even wanna touch my pedals because I just love the sound of my cranked amps so much. I live on 40 acres though and have a big house and so I don't have to worry about volume at all. I honestly feel sorry for players that never get to experience a truly cranked tube amp just distorting so wonderfully and to my ears NOTHING on earth does like a Vox. The natural distortion of a Vox is just so wonderful to my ears.
You can always tell there are some amazing sounds being conceived when Dan and Mick both smile and giggle like school boys😂 what a luxury to be able to crank those badass amps up all the way!!! Best electric guitar gear show on the internet 🤘🏼
I'm still hoping to hear a TPS album!?!?!?!?!? Gentlemen your guitar playing makes the soundtrack to my every day. I don't think you realize how much cool music you turn out every month. Pool it all together to a "TPS Soundtrack" ......I'm ready to buy the cd!!!! Great shows !! Thanks for them !
