I’ve had a pd36r for a year and a half and it has taken an astounding amount of abuse and never failed me once in all of that time, one hell of a durable flashlight that impressed me. It truly is a plumbers best friend bar none 👍
Lovely review! Just ordered this flashlight, it's my first one in the price span of 70-100€ and cannot wait for it to arrive. Time to start some night hikes through the local woods!
I’m just kind of window shopping flashlights and watching videos whilst bored. Gotta say this video is really well done. Good review. Thing is bright as heck for 1600 Lm
Outstanding review. I love the effort you went to for "just" a flashlight review. I'm not tactical or anything like that, but as an avid outdoorsman I'd like a light that has great throw for when I need it. I do agree the moonlight mode is a little bright but I'll make do. It doesn't have to be perfect for me; good enough is just that.
Great video, congratulations. I gave away two of these lights last year and those who use them are very happy. I have been using Fenix since 2012 and it does great lighting but I would like it to also do versions with a neutral tint. When I gave the two lights as a gift, I didn't buy it for myself because I only use neutral lights (but before giving the torches as a gift I tried them and I was very impressed) After a long time I bought the PD36R yesterday thanks to a big discount. I haven't received it yet but having tried it some time ago my opinion is that it could be one of the best lights ever put on the market. Only criticism: I would like a sixth level of 1 lumens and a neutral tint
I bought one of the Cerakoted ones. Fenix has a handful of models they sent to BlownDeadline for Cerakote. The battery life is pretty amazing that and the Cerakote and 20% off sale they had going for Memorial Day is what basically made up my mind on the light. Was $119 after the 20% off that Cerakote adds $50 or so to the price but it looks so cool lol.
Great demo of a cool light. A firefly setting would be great for police officers doing surveillance. They need to be able to take notes without so much light to attract attention.
The PD36R is a great light. I own one and have to agree about needing a lower setting for eco though I would say 5 lumens rather than 15; as focused as the beam is 15 lumens would still be too bright in some situations. I have a 2014 model Fenix LD22 with a similar beam pattern with a 3 lumen low setting which won’t blind you working on something close up and still gives plenty of light. For someone who depends on a long lasting light it is a great option.
Appreciate it! Unfortunately, it seems common across most of their lights. I just got an E35 in and it suffers from the same problem (and it's nowhere close to being a "tactical" light).
Just bought one from their website list $99 got it for $74 with Veteran discount and free shipping! Looked at Olite but didn’t like proprietary charging and battery set up Don’t buy off of Amazon too many fakes they also offer first time buyer 20% off discount but you can’t stack them no need to wait for flash sales go get one.
Merci bien Jean!
The point for the two side clip is so you can clip it to a hat to make it a head lamp and clip it down many ways but if you want the one sided one get the pd35 and just switch the clips but as well it doesn’t have a charging cover so you feel better with it in the water
I dislike the belt loop clip too but the 🔦 is impressive. I have a older PD35 1000lum with a 28500 style battery(Streamlight). I'd like Fenix to provide a duty type 👮🏻♂️ nylon belt holder, polymer-kydex belt holster. The cheap black nylon model is not great. My PD35 came on for 15min & got super 🔥..
in the second mode, where the flashlight has 26 hours of autonomy, it’s 150 lumens, why did you put 115 lumens on the video? after all is it 150 or 115 lumens of power the second mode from the bottom up? thanks.
I had a sofirn 18650 I loved. You could use non protection batteries and it was very inexpensive. The light worked great and was very bright. However, after a few months the tail switch stopped working. I love the fenix as a replacement. I will not buy sofirn anymore.
They're definitely not in the same league, that's for sure! For more a "disposable" light that I won't get too upset if it gets lost or broken, they still work pretty well.
How efficient is the SST-40? I mean its light output... It's better than CREE? Is it good enough not to degrade in the short term? Do you know how many hours of useful life it has?
That is a great question that I, unfortunately, don't have the technical knowledge to answer. I have yet to experience any issues with this light in the few years I've owned and used this light, and I haven't heard of anyone else having problems with this LED. While I couldn't come across a specific lifespan for this LED, I haven't come across any commonly-used LEDs that don't have several tens of thousands of hours of run time. The average user will probably never run against this limit before a newer, fancier light catches their eye.
Do you still use the 36 or is it rotation with another 21700 light? There’s a RU-vid reviewer cannot remember his name, but he used the 36 for about 2 years until he bought and tried out the new PD35 V3. And actually that 1 is 18650 powered.
Its not in my main rotation, but it is still a primary backup in one of my many go-bags. I dont have any experience with the PD35. I would imagine it's vastly the same barring the smaller battery. Not sure if it would be helpful, but I have a comparison between the "old" 36R and 36R/Pro coming very soon!
Mine only lasted 3 months! Kind of my fault though because I left it in the heat and in the glove compartment. Came back and the silicone bulged out. Oh well still charges n works fine
I need help in choosing which one to purchase . It’s my first Fenix flashlight and I’m unsure of whether to purchase the PD35 tac , PD35 v2.0 , or this PD36R . I’m planning on using it for EDC .
Oh, that's a tough choice! Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with any lights from the PD35 series. from looking on the website, the biggest difference is the battery size (18500 vs a 21700 battery in the PD36) and built-in USB charging (again only in the 36). The 36 will be able to sustain more lumens for longer at the sacrifice of an overall increase in bulk (you can google "18650 vs 21700" to get a sense of the comparison). Having built-in USB charging however, does make not having to have a dedicated charger at hand a thing of the past.
Why cant they change the no tail stand capabilities on their new models yet?? It's nice in a power outage when you can light up a room. Get with the competitors fenix!
Hi: Nice review from someone that obviously depends on a great flashlight. question.. Have you compared this against the PD40R? I'm trying to decide between the two for home use - project and the like. I like that the PD36R can be used in tail stand mode (think working under a sink!), but I've never been fond of that copper switch and sort of like the rotary switch on the 40R. However, I think the tail stand feature is more valuable. Thanks for any input on that any other pros/cons between the two.
Hi ! Thanks for your review, rather instructive! Do you happen to know how long it will work on the 'beast' mode - 1600 lumens? I know that the Olight Warrior X Pro lasts about 2 mins on the brightest mode, then it changes to a lighter mode to protect it. Is there a similar cooling system at this one, or would it work for longer and still be protected ?
From another person who physically tested the turbo on the pd36r. Turbo will run 1,600 lumens at 5min then drop to 1,400 lumens another 20 minutes then down to 800 lumens the remainder of the battery at 4 hours. This usage of turbo is way better than acebeam, Olight, nitecore. Compare any turbo or usage of battery. The 36 is SO efficient
The Fenix E18R comes with a magnetic charging cord. Why does the PD36R not have this too ? They could have done it & I'm sure they will in the next year after they have sold the previous model
Do you mean like most Olights have? I have a ton of lights but after the novelty of the Olight mag charging and proprietary battery wore off, it was the last one I ever got.
@@undefeatedgaul3201 with or without the usb c silicone cover the Fenix pd36r is water tight/ proof. My cover came off within the first 3 months and I purposely submerged mine over and over to insure the 36 earns it’s rightful place as my primary EDC light. And that it does 🥇
Not on this model. The only function the rear switch has is to turn the light on and off. To get into strive mode, one has to press/hold the side switch.
Currently it's $99 US on Fenixlighting.com. Unfortuantely I don't have any experience with any Indian dealers and can't really help you finding one there. I'm sure you could contact Fenix directly and they would be able to direct you to the nearest dealer.
Unfortunately, I haven't done any formal tests, but I've run turbo (and the subsequent stepped-down high mode) for 5-10 minutes. It certainly gets warm, but unlike some other lights like an Astrolux S43 it never gets truly unbearably hot. I think overall Fenix errs a little more cautious, and opt for a more reserved output instead of trying to get big numbers for a spec sheet. None the less, that might be a good test to incorporate into future reviews!
@@f50koenigg I'm not the best person to speak about self-defense related matters as I don't have much experience in that field. The bezel doesn't really look like it's intentionally designed to cause any extra trauma. There are definitely many other lights out there that have bezels that look like they'd do a little more damage (it's definitely no 4sevens PK Paladin). That being said, the edge does taper down quite a bit, and I wouldn't want to take a solid impact form this thing... Whether it's a solid metal-bodied pen, a light like the PD36R, or a purpose-built impact weapon I think the most crucial aspect is not soo much the design of the object, but rather the training that goes into its use.
1,817 lumens at 30sec as you see. Just check out that power down graph for turbo. The best 1 I’ve seen zeroair.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/zeroair_reviews_fenix_pd36r_21700_60_turbo_fixed.png
Thank you so much! I hadn't thought about it, but it does look like a really nice light! Right now I've got a pretty good backlog of lights that were sent to me so it might be a while. As for the camera, I almost exclusively use my Fuji x-t3. Every now and then I'll throw in a little footage from my S10E.
@@damnjustassignmeone Its not a fetish for guns. Not everything is sexual. A lot of the people purchasing a light like this are going to utilize it on a duty belt for security or law enforcement purposes. Hence the gun. It's the market.
