Frieren went to Heiter 20 years after Himmel’s death, it’s been 7 years, so Fern was 8 or 9 when they first met, and they have been travelling for about a year

I think the idea that Fern is obsessed with combat is a bit misplaced. After all the whole reason that Fern wanted to become a mage so badly in Ep2 was for Heiter

Right, the reason Fern got so upset during the long Blue Moon flower search wasn't that she wanted to fight/kill things. She told the herbalist an exceptional mage like Frieren could do so much more good using all that time to travel further and help more people, rather than spend 6 months [or more] in one place on a personally-motivated search for something that might not even exist anymore.

Yeah I didn't necessarily mean that she wanted to JUST kill things, but more so that she wanted to spend her time actually helping people and part of that would be combat haha. Sorry if I didn't explain that so well!

While Qual gets an unceremonious death. The guy was the real deal. His spell and the defensive spells that was developed to counter it are the foundation of battle magic in Frieren’s world. He basically created the equivalent of guns and changed everything in war because of it. If he were to learn defensive magic he would have been a big threat.

The scary part is he just nearly did. He looked at the shield once, then replicated it at his fingers. A few hours or maybe even seconds, maybe even less hubris, he might've created a more powerful shield spell.

29:00 - about this topic of Frieren and Fern having a dispute over how they spend their time - That dispute was resolved in the previous episode to an extent. I am not sure if it was ever a matter of Fern wanting to fight something/do more impactful things necessarily. It was mostly about Fern not wanting to "waste" time because any time they spend is so much more impactful to Fern than Frieren. Frieren could live to be 1,000 years old, so she thinks it's not a waste to stay on one seemingly unimportant/not impactful task for so long. But the dispute ended when Frieren said she will start to respect Fern's time more in the future. Edit: You go on to say that you appreciate how things don't seem to bottle up in this show, and I have to agree with you. It seems that because these two have to adventure together, they are very upfront about their feelings/attitudes with each other and are thus more willing to compromise with each other to make it all work. I think that's one of this show's strengths.

I wouldn't say she thought he was joking. She was just not interested in those things and mostly still isn't. That's likely part of why he never fully confessed. He must have known it would have gone nowhere back then.
