@Rejoice Always Right? I wish we were that clever back in the early 90's. I had to quit as I ended up with lung problems. And yes that space helmet is brilliant. Most of the really difficult kitties we had the vet would prescribe them meds to calm their nerves so we could groom them. I hated seeing them put on meds like that, but we didn't have clever tools back then like they do now. The thing I miss most about grooming is scissoring. People love to say that a pet is "angry" when it's just stressed and uncomfortable and fear disguised as anger is their natural response in stressful situations. It takes a smart person to sense that the animal cannot handle more of a stressful situation they are in and that is best for their sake to stop. Well done

Moving around, or touching or worse bumping/pressing/tugging a mat relieves this tension on one side but multiplies it on the other. Better to do it properly than risk the abscess turning cancerous, but total anesthesia has stresses of its own. He to stay in the vet over night, for a start, then there were the physiological stresses of going under. There's always some risk. And, it's expensive. Work like this absolutely needs to be done, and from what it looks like this groomer is very gentle (or tries to be, cases like this are tough). It's hard being as small as a cat, even if this guy looks pretty big as far as cats go. Trying to be ferocious and perceived as a threat is a survival instinct, the more you look like work to hunt as prey, the less likely you are to be attacked. It's something humans have learned too, a recommendation for people who are getting abducted is to be as difficult as possible and fight as hard as you can, there's always a chance your attacker will decide you're just not worth the effort. A friend of mine used to breed and show Birmans, a long-haired breed. Joan was outstanding at preparing cats for a show - they were the most immaculate fluff balls you could ever see. She advised me that one of the best tools to getting matts out is a seam ripper - the sewing tool. It has a sharp point, so you have to be careful, but it's easy to wield in awkward spaces. It goes in and cuts through the matted hairs, making it easier to pull them apart and release them. I use one on my own cats - my late Birman, and my Norweigan Forest. It reduces the need to tug with a comb and makes grooming easier for both parties.

@@dreaming-of-spots6805 I would strongly suggest slipping the teeth of a comb between the skin and the mat before snipping, even with those shears. Cat skin is exceptionally prone to getting pulled up into mats and the comb makes sure any wrinkles are well out of the way. I frequently use a comb and my thinning shears to break up matting on more sensitive clients and it's been invaluable on behind the ear matting when the pet won't tolerate clippers near the head

I used the Maxpower dematting tool on my Brit's back end, as he would act like this floof when I'd brush it, and he'd get mats. It's the same idea as a seam ripper, but it has multiple hooks that protect the razor sharp edge that gets under the mat, and cuts it off. Check Amazon, thr pics will explain it better, but boy did it work wonders. I thought I was going to have to shave my his fuzzy "pants" off, rather than just doing the regular sanitary shave.

I completely sympathize with both you and the the owners here. My Bailey is also a big long-hair (raggamuffin mix, rescued) and hates having her backside touched for any reason; yet as an older cat, she can no longer completely reach back there to clean herself thoroughly without help. Her fur is extremely fine, and traps every little grain of anything that might be around. Once started, a mat can spread to the rest of her side in a day or so (she likes to roll around on the floor, sunbeam present or not, lol). So, for her health, she gets shaved from flanks back to the tail tip while under anesthesia during her yearly dental appointment and I work to maintain the shaved area as it grows back. Still requires me to carefully remove any starting mats every now and then, but at least we haven't had any stinky mats back there in years. But the rest of her fur forward of her flanks she has no issues with me grooming.

@@ardour1587 listen, i really see where you're coming from. i agree that domestic animals aren't bred properly. selectively breeding an animal to be “cute” is pleasing to a few odd individuals, but ultimately a lot of “cute” traits are detrimental to an animal's wellbeing. need i bring up any brachycephalic dog or cat breeds? what about great danes? scottish fold cats? so i completely agree with you on that point: we messed with the genes of animals for aesthetic purposes without regard to their wellbeing, and it's beyond wrong. it's disgusting. you lose me at the suggestion that an animal can't feel love. we are animals, so that statement is objectively incorrect. clearly not every animal feels love in the way we define it (and of course plenty of species don't have the capacity for complex emotions), but in the very least the same cannot be said for cats and dogs. my main concern, however, is the mention of the air gun in your first comment… what in the hell did you do to that poor cat??

A light sedation probably wont do the trick considering the amount of handling and time a grooming requires. And every sedation carries a risk. The animal might be allergic for example to the drug that is used or it might have a poor blood circulation, etc. Friends had a dog that had to be sedated for an op, it never woke up again. Its probably also not a good idea to give a sedated animal a bath since if you slip up and it gets to much water into its face, it might drown.
@GotInterest
@GotInterest 2 года назад
Sedation is typically reserved for severe cases of matting where the pet needs grooming intervention for health and safety but the animal is too stressed to handle a long, intense groom. This angry kitty's case was not nearly severe enough and Vanessa was able to get the important stuff done without sedation. But if he had thick mattes covering his whole body then, yes, sedation would probably be a good idea. It's generally not a good idea to sedate an animal unless absolutely necessary just because of the risks involved.
