I still remember the crowd roaring in the moment the Ferrari started again in the last pit stop. I was in the grandstand directly above the Ferrari pit and everyone was so relieved they managed to get going again. So far my favorite Le Mans memory.
You should mention that Ferrari also got a 24kg weight penalty. So the weight difference between them and Toyota is not that large. What really saved Ferrari's race in terms of regulation is that WEC allowed tyre warmer for leman. And Ferrari was struggling with tyre warming all season.
You're right. This is something that really annoys me. The amount of news resources and other things telling us that Toyota got more weight were true, but they were often not telling the whole story, and if they did, it basically was very minor that the reader won't remember. Ferrari also got 24 kg more, Cadillac 11 kg, Porsche 3 kg. The Peugeot was left untouched. It's definitely not like Ferrari was given the win on a silver plate. You could also say the Toyota was rated too well for the first three races, but then you're usually told that Toyota is just better as a team or that their drivers are better. To be fair, since Toyota has a lot more experience, this probably has some merit, however Ferrari building a more or less bullet proof car from day one and it performs so well out of the gate, this is outstanding nevertheless.
No the reasoning behind ferrari and tyre deg was that it was specifically designed for lemans to increase stint timing because they knew they wouldn't be as fast as toyota and wanted to reduce the tire changes. So they did miserable at spa because of the rain, and lost a lot of time at lemans during rain, however they ran on softer tires during the night which allowed them to claw back the deficit and ran meds/hards in the morning to finish it off. Point being they wanted to ein lemans more than WEC because of history and they managed to do that
Not to mention that Toyota also had some real bad luck with their lead car getting hit in the rear at night which forced them to retire and then the #8 car facing technical difficulties which put them a lap behind instead of having a closer dogfight in the closing laps of Le Mans 2023. As for their performance in the 24hr Nurburgring, it's kinda sad that Kevin Este had to retire due to a crash considering he was putting so much pressure on Ferrari
@@ConfiUser3 The win at 2023 Le Mans, though I do not like the result, was definitely a well earned win. Ferrari and Toyota's rivalry in the race was insane. WEC 2023 was definitely a great season. Even Porsche seemed to be close to winning on Toyota's home turf which is pretty scary when you think about it.
@@speedandpower95wooow! your editing skills are GOD TIER. the way your story has a beautiful arc and builds tension, I felt like watching a movie... script, the cuts and beautiful arragement to bring forth the core message, you(or your team) blew it out the water with this one...
I am absolute not a Ferrari hater but that is just categorically untrue lol. We're blessed with some truly beautiful looking and sounding cars at the top of the field these days!
This was one of the most incredible days of my life. I've been a Ferrari fan my whole life, i don't remember the last time we won an f1 title because I was only 3 so I'd only experience a few victories. Watching during the night the ferrari leading and then going to bed for a few hours wondering if we would still be leading when I woke up was so tense. That last pit stop was so nerve-wracking to watch. But to see the beautiful 499P cross the line to win was the most unbelievable feeling.
Funny Enough that was THEIR FIRST RACE WIN in LEMANS Since 1965 and FIRST WIN in 499P From Car 51 As Well. I Have Seen the Race which is incredibly memorable. What a Race That Was
As a professional ferrari hater with a ph.d in hating ferrari from the University of Brazilian F1 Drivers, I must admit I felt emotional seeing them win le mans and was almost crying! Great job ferrari!
i found this video randomly on my for you page. so here's hoping the algorithm gods shine upon you and give you that beautiful 6 digit view count and more for this fabulous video
You also forgot to mention one of the keys to their success: AF Corse. Yes, it was a Ferrari car, but the team running it wasn't one necessarily built from scratch by Ferrari. AF Corse has been a loyal partner of Ferrari's for years through their GT program, and with around 10+ years of experience running at Le Mans and the WEC, it was a logical decision to have them run the Hypercar program (hence saving them a "couple of seasons" worth of trying to understand how the whole shebang works in the WEC).
I liked that cinematic-like bit in the end. Something to be kept in mind is that despite the BoP intervention, Toyota Gazoo Racing still put up one hell of a fight against the Ferrari AF Corse. Which shows the testament of their Le Mans experience of trials of errors and close calls, and eventual victories starting from 2018 since the 80s. Much appreciation for Peugeot as well for their everything from the car alone, to their potential of winning. With all being said, I hope the BoP will try to be consistent to their fairest so that even the starting-to-age Toyota will still be fresh for the fight with reigning Le Mans winner - Ferrari. Couldn't think of Le Mans without Toyota in the recent years, since Nissan and Mazda are just.. at their thing.
So basically Toyota had the best car of any of the teams despite using the same parameters, but FIA swooped in last second and made them put a 100 pounds of weight in it for no reason other than developing the best car?... Thats pretty stupid if you ask me
BOP is a common thing you'll find across multiple categories. It's made so that racing is more interesting and much much cheaper, you literally can't predict what's next. Of course there are obvious downsides to this.
@@speedandpower95 That being the best driver and best car winning races??? Why don't you watch competitive coin flipping if you want to see everything be "equal" and crappy cars win races undeservedly.
@@speedandpower95 This is endurance racing. Peugeot back in the days was several seconds faster than Audi in Qualifying (at Le Mans 2008 there was a 5 second gap between Peugeot and Audi), they won most 6h/1000km races against Audi but couldn't keep up in 12h and 24h races despite being way faster. So i believe we should not slow down cars especially in a 24h race. In 2014 Audi was slower than both Toyota and Porsche but still won at Le Mans.
Ferrari got 24 extra KGs? The point of it is to make The racing close and fun to watch not just make it so teams with the biggest budget have a massive advantage
So you are telling me the fia had to cripple the toyota so ferrari had a chance? Jesus its the mazda 787b all over again. European cars can't keep up with the japanese, so just change the rules.
You're right about Toyota but dead wrong about Mazda. The 787B was a Group C car, and the entire Group C was eliminated after 1990 (the 1991 Le Mans was a one off concession to the fact only Peugeot had developed a good enough car under the new regulations). So the 787B went the same way the German Mercedes and Porsches, the British Jaguars, and the Japanese Nissan and the Toyotas. No European conspiracy against the rotary engine.
Shocked you’ve got such a small amount of subscribers considering the quality of this video. Brilliant stuff, just getting into WEC and catching up on last year so this kept me glued 😂
I still feel sorry for Charles Leclerc: Imagine going to watch the 24h of Le Mans, probably get some VIP behind the scenes access due to your connections with Ferrari, only to see the AF Corse team do everything right. And then you need to go back to the clowns at the Scuderia to prepare for yet another weekend of "El Plan"
this is a truly great cinematography and story telling. the pace in each part of the video and sound design and the directing and editing are on such a grand level. thank you for my best 10 minutes of today. for record: this comment is written in the times the channel had 2.34K subscribers.
This video is extremely sensationalized at best and misinformed at worst. And I say this with hope that your future is bright! 0:00 “Ferrari had their entire reputation on the line”. No they didn’t. No one expected them to win on their return. 0:04 “For 58 long years they hadn’t won one of the most important races in history” You completely neglect Ferraris many manufacturer championships and NUMEROUS class wins at Le Mans since 1965. Since 1998: -1998 LMP1 class win (8th overall, LMGT1 was the top class) -2003 GTS class win (10th overall) -2008 GT2 class win -2009 GT2 class win -2012 LMGTE PRO class win -2014 LMGTE PRO class win -2015 LMGTE AM class win -2016 LMGTE AM class win -2017 LMGTE AM class win -2019 LMGTE AM class win -2021 LMGTE PRO class win -2021 LMGTE AM class win The world endurance championship debuted in 2012. Ferrari is the most successful GT constructer in the championships history. Winning 7 of 10 pro championships (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022). While it’s true Ferrari had not won the top class since 1965. They have won. And they clearly know how to build an endurance race car and go endurance racing. 0:11 “It was a wound that deeply hurt Ferrari and that they desperately needed to heal” Was it really? 0:18 “They saw the opportunity to redeem themselves, rescue their legendary reputation as one of the most iconic names in automotive history” Are we talking about the same Ferrari. They are THE most iconic name in Motorsport history regardless of a 2023 Le Mans outright win. 0:41 “So they decided in 1973 to retire from racing at Le Mans completely” See above about recent success at Le Mans. 0:52 “Because of their retirement they now had to start from zero all the experience they had from their successful era in Le Mans was gone” May I re state: Since 2012 Ferrari has won 7 manufacturer championships in GTE PRO and 12 class wins at le mans since 1998. The team that ran the extremely successful GTE PRO program (AF Corse) would also be running the 499P. AF Corse know how to win endurance races 1:07 “It would take Ferrari a couple of seasons to compete at the same level as the rest of the field” Maybe you don’t quite understand balance of performance. But you should before making this claim. In theory the Ferrari and every other car in the field have an equal maximum performance. 1:14 “They only had one shot at [winning le mans]” No they didn’t. If they lost they’d come back next year and try again. Their participation in WEC did not hinge on a 2023 Le Mans victory. 1:00 “Their F1 experience would not help them” *1 minute later* 1:50 “They took some of the hybrid technology from their F1 car” At least don’t contradict yourself within 1 minute of making a claim. 2:48 “There was no time for testing” The 499P actually did extensive testing at Ferraris race track in Modena Italy and 2 days of testing at Monza. The Ferrari 499P did its first test on July 6 2022. Sebring was March 17 2023. 3:00 “[Toyota] had been dominating the 24h of Le Mans for 5 years” They had no real competition, so I wouldn’t say they dominated. But they did indeed win the past 5 races. 3:10 *Sebring recap* You misrepresented the Ferraris pace. The #50 Ferrari actually qualified first ahead of both Toyotas. They took some risks with strategy and some sloppy driving cost them any chance of a win. There was more to the race than just finishing 2 laps ahead. 3:16 *recap leading up to Le Mans* Ferrari had the edge over Toyota at Spa Francorchamps, but with a lap time deletion did not secure pole. However if not for Ferraris issues warming the tires, they were actually faster than Toyota. This gave a lot of Ferrari fans hope going into Le Mans at the next round. Especially because tire warmers would be allowed further reducing the advantage Toyota had. 3:39 Ah, you finally mentioned Balance of Performance. Good. But then you didn’t give the full story. The BoP was not supposed to change. Which makes your “miracle” an even bigger “miracle” Ferrari also gained weight as it was clear Ferrari AND Toyota were too fast. Toyota was assigned 37kg weight increase (bad) and an increase in stint energy by 4 mega joules (good). Vs Ferrari’s incense of 24kg and 2 mega joule incense in stint energy. So overall it was a weight increase over Ferrari of 13kg and 2 extra MJ per stint. 4:18 “And right from the start everyone feared that the poor strategies that their F1 team is famous for would replicate here in Le Mans” No one who watches endurance racing thought Ferrari would have bad strategy. This is AF Corse. They know what they were doing. 4:59 “both Ferraris had an intense moment with another team that had vast experience in this race. Porsche” You cannot claim Ferrari had zero experience at Le Mans when you claim that Porsche has vast experience. Yes Porsche competed and won Le Mans outright multiple times in the LMP1 era. But they had never raced a LMDh at Le Mans. And their most recent pro experience at Le Mans was in GTE PRO, the same as Ferrari. 5:18 RIP JOTA, you were doing amazing 6:10 great recap of this crash! It was a weird one Notes: Your race recap was really good! You probably should have talked about the Toyota brake issues. It was definitely a contributing factor in Ferrari pulling away. Overall: As someone who lives and breathes endurance racing I am so glad there is someone covering Le Mans and endurance racing as a whole. Your video was extremely well produced. This was one of the greatest 24h of Le Mans maybe ever and I’m glad people are telling the story. However I think you sensationalized things a lot. Most of my problems with the video were with setting the context. The race needed no sensationalizing (what a race). I think that including AF Corse and their recent success in GTE PRO with Ferrari is important to the story. Including the glimmers of hope with pole positions and a close performance at Spa. As well as an overall recap of the teams joining in 2022/2023 and the rules around LMH and LMDh. The fact that instead of beating 4 cars to victory you now needed to beat 18 cars. If you decide to do further WEC coverage I’d suggest taking it slower include a bit more context without sensationalizing the context. Not everything needs to be win or else face shame and never return. You earned a subscriber and I really look forward to your future work! Just let the stories breathe. Great work! My criticism comes from wanting you to succeed and reach the diehard endurance community.
Thanks for taking the time to write this. I tried to write it as factual as possible. But I did omit some things just to add drama to the story. I prioritized more the 'dramatic' side than a full list of facts. Your input is very welcome however!
The team and car was amazing but I feel like something that went under the radar was Pier Guidi's rapid stints in the morning. His was one of the greatest drives I've ever seen in any category.
You got it wrong. Ferrari left lemans because they didn’t have enough money to support both the lemans scuderia and the formula 1 scuderia so enzo decided to focus their effort on the formila 1 team and left the 24h series, i think that since then ferrari became the most successful f1 team in history it was the right choice
ferrari started as an f1 team but yeah after they stoped winning in f1 they went to lemans and then they stoped winning at le mans and went to f1 basicly
@@foundedcupid5286 they never stopped racing in f1, ferrari is the only current manufacturer that has raced in every year of formula 1 existence, check your facts before spreading misinformation
Correct except that it wasn't his call. The 1973 season was a disaster for F1 while don Enzo put all of their engineers to work in Sport Prototypes, yet they were throughly beaten by Matra, so FIAT (which had purchased a 50% interest) sent an envoy to Maranello to tell il Commendatore that the SP experiment had to end to focus on F1.
You are underrated. Keep doing what you do because this content is amazing. Editing style and narrative choices were great. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Subbed
Even though I am a lifelong Ferrari fan, victories under BoP are meaningless to me. Imagine they did the same in F1, penalizing RedBull for winning too often. And I strongly suspect that without BoP, Toyota would win every single WEC race.
who made the video wasn't telling the full truth...toyota had to put 37 kg but ferrari has to add 24 kg -..not so much deifference and then it was announced in 2022 ..an year previus not in the last minute...inform yourself and don't believe everything you find on the internet
Now with BoP 'winning' is like a participation award. Would Ford have spent millions to be the best if all that was needed was to ballast/restrict the Ferraris? Would Porsche have built their all-conquering prototypes? Audi...And how about F1, ballast and restrict the Ferraris, Mercs and Red Bulls of this Century? This is not racing nor striving to be the best of the best.
if you want to tell something you should do it telling the full truth not only what you like...this is unfair and very cheap from you... It lloks like the bop was introduced 2 days before the race in le mans when was actually announced in 2022 and also toyota has to add 37 kg but Ferrari has to add 24kg as well...stop the Bs!
WHAT?!? WE deserved it! We came back. To REDEEM OURSELVES WITH A CAR, THAT BECAME A PHOENIX, REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF A FATEFUL AND MESSED UP DECISION MADE IN 1974!!! AND HER MAJESTY LE MANS, THE RACE OF ALL RACES, THE PINNACLE OF MOTORSPORT, CROWNED THE BRAVE, THE PASSION, THE EFFORT, NOT THE MERE MONEY!!! AND IT IS A STORY OF PASSION AND NOT OF SELF-PROCLAMATION! Toyota won and messed it from frustration to "not be anymore capable of", pushing a car to the limits and infranging a golden rule of Le Mans: you don't win by going at the limit. But going at what the car can bear, and no matter what, you must respect it. Ferrari respected that pace, passed the Toyota #7, and they tried the impossible with a car that was impossible to reach, with the result of breaking that rule, with the result of overheating the tires and spun. Then, we flew away. And the rest IS CEMENTED IN HISTORY!!! We got the Centenary. And I cannot think of a more beautiful story to tell my childrens. - From an italian that dreamed that return that seemed impossible and nevertheless, saw it. From the eyes of a guy that loved Le Mans and eventually became a historian of it and the former World Sportcars Campionship as a whole, whom cried for hours for uncontainable joy and incredulity, with the heart full of pride, in that magic June the 11th, 2023, at 4:03 P.M. ❤️ WE. MADE. HISTORY. *PERIOD.*
Something this video skips over is that Ferrari ORDERED the GT ferrari to intentionally take Koboyashi out of the race. They knew they could not beat the God of LeMans even with all the regulations put in place to help Ferrari.
Motorsports twitter were ready to clown the brand and all the tifosi around the world were ready to commit suicide when that 51 Ferrari stayed still in the pitlane with 24 minutes to go
