I believe that the song is based on a story from the Edda where Fafnir isn't a true dragon but a changeling. The Ring of the Nibelungs, the classic German saga, is based on that story, but is not as violent as the story that Icelandic monk wrote down.

In the Nibelungenlied, it was Hagen von Tronje who killed Siegfried with the spear. The only part of the body he could be hurt or killed was the one covered by the leaf. The rest of his body could not be distroyed, because of the dragon blood he bathed in. Hagen did this, because Brunhild asked for revenge, because of Siegfrieds betrayal on her. He helped king Gunther von Burgund to be stronger in a fight against her, because Siegfried wore a cape that made him invisible and he did most of the work. So Brunhild had to marry Gunther, because she lost the fight.

Not trying to teach history, just providing some background. It is obviously based on the Volsung Saga where Sigurd (Sigfrid) defeats the dragon Fafnir and marries the Valkury Brunhild. It's the same story that Richard Wagner used for opera Der Ring Des Nibelung (The Ring of the Nibelung) in the mid 19th century.

@@angussharington2374 which languages do you think, they used? I only hear 2 (german and norwegian?). Of couse the "dragonslayer" is english. But that doesn't make up the lyrics.

@@angussharington2374 it's a single word. I count languages, if it is at least a sentence (because we use english words "just for fun" in German, too). German is clearly understandable to me. But I'm not sure what the other language is.
