This video 'FFT performance 8bit vs 12bit Oscilloscopes - Pico vs Siglent - GWInstek - MicSig' will show what 8 bit vs 12 bit vertical resolution will do for FFT measurements. I'll use a 1Vrms signal with a smaller 10mV signal riding on top. I'll then drop the 10 mV to 1 mv to see if the FFT can pick it up. Also, it will show how much easier the software for the Pico Oscilloscope makes it to zoom into and examine a waveform.

Thanks for the great video, Eddie. I'm watching this because I just recently bought a Pico scope and I love your growing enthusiasm which reminds me of what I went through myself. ;-) I had originally thought I would get a Series 2000 scope plus the same scope you have (Series 4000) to get a range of measurement capabilities but the sales rep convinced me to go for the Series 5000 -- PicoScope 5242B, to be exact -- because it had a wider bandwidth than the 4000 model plus the 8-16 bit resolution. So it combined the features of the two models I was originally contemplating. Another sweet point? It was being replaced by the next incoming model so I got it for less than $1000 USD, which I certainly can't complain about. I also added a current probe to the order because that will enable me to do power measurements and profile the power consumption of very low power microcontroller products I will be designing soon.

I like the UI of the Instek more than my Siglent. It updates pretty quickly too.

Great Stuff as usual. I am looking at the 2205 model, 25 mhz, AWG, 16 channel Logic Analyzer FFT 8 bit up to 12 in high resolution model. Really feature packed for under 500 dollars. USB scopes are the way to go for people that want a lot of features but can't afford to spend a ton.

Your videos are become more consistence, it looks like you are near to have found your preferred style, and it's a fine style. :-) I do not know but suspect you also have found it faster and easier to edit, now you have found your style? About the 0.01% noise, would an analog scope be able to show that signal, since it has "no resolution"?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 года назад
Thanks Fried Mule! I am getting faster, but these videos actually took some time to do because of all the cuts and edits due to the different scopes and camera positions. My new setup does use autofocus which has helped a lot - although isn’t perfect;)

What I think? I think that being a beginner at this, I'm glad I went with a Pico 2205a as my first. It already found a bad alternator and battery on my jeep without having to rely on some parts store guy telling me, or the worry that I wasn't seeing a signal correctly because of bad hardware and software...
@KissAnalog

Wow, it sounds like you are past the beginner stage;) Nice job selecting the Pico - again few beginers would find that;)

Thanks for your question! I have some older videos on best scopes under $300 and $500, and I need to update those, or should I do a video for best scope for beginners?

@@KissAnalog - I honestly believe that you should just give a short 5 or 10 minute video on the best scopes for the money at the different price points. Your videos are very good, but can be quite confusing at times, at least to those I've referred to your channel's scope and meter reviews. True "KISS" reviews with most complete and easy to use menus, 8 or 12 bit dacs, accuracy and update speeds. This is just my opinion. I've taught electrical at the local college. Please just do some 5 or 10 minute #Shorts on your choice for the best scope in each price range. Great video! Thank you, sir.

Hey Eddie I’m not going to lie I’m not actually sure what FFT is, would you be willing to do a video on what FFT is and where it is useful?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 года назад
Thanks for this feedback. I do have other videos that I show the FFT, and talk a bit about it. You can search my channel for FFT, or search RU-vid with KissAnalog FFT. I’m glad that you were one of the brave ones to bring this up. Not an easy subject. I’ll do a video on the KISS method of understanding FFT;) Thank you!!

@@KissAnalog I have searched for it in the past but the examples were kinda hard to see the practicality of it so I just couldn’t wrap my head around what it means in a real application….. like in college I got through the first 3 calculus classes alright, because I could visualize it. But with differential equations I couldn’t see it and I struggled, I bought my scope which is a rigol 1054z because it was the cheapest full feature scope with 4 channels. Knowing it’s FFT was not great, But again if I’m honest sometimes I use it just like 4 volt meters lol…. One day I’ll get there…..

Eddie, I'm looking for an Oscope that can display 4 channels, each with they're own time division. (ie CH1 = 5usec/div; CH2 = 50usec/div; etc) Do you know of any devices that can do this?

Hey Eddie, I'm shopping for an oscilloscope because I'm entering an instrumentation and control engineering program but I dont know what kind of scope I need. I'll be working with low voltage circuits as well as micro controllers. I am currently looking at a GDS-1104B from GW Instek is this a good choice?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 года назад
Great question! I thought I'd answered this, but sometimes my responses don't get uploaded for some reason... That is not a bad scope at all, but I do like the PicoScopes too because you get so much scope for your money. The computer display and GPU is not on the scope so you get more scope for the money and the software is getting updated all the time. Check it out and let me know what you think: amzn.to/3jANTrT
