I agree but not 💯 because I am a serious bass fisherman and have given up on FG. I am 60 years old and my eye and hand coordination just isn’t what it was. Believe you me I have tried. I might attempt one more time with but only once more because it pisses me when I fail! 😂😂😂I’ll just go back to Alberto or Uni to Uni.😂
Unreal knot strength. Have 200lb braid to 400lb Mono as well as 250lb braid to 500lb mono for large Goliath grouper as well as HUGE Tiger sharks here in the Gulf. Knot is absolutely lights out tough. Never ONCE have we lost a fish to knot failure. Learn it, perfect it and fish it....Great video and narration.
I use this knot and haven't had any issues. I use this with 10lbs braid to 8lbs fluorocarbon leader with my spinning setups. I do use 32 wraps with the smaller diameter lines and when I finish cutting the braid tag end, I do add just a drop of super glue to seal the deal. Thank you for your great tutorial on the FG Knot!
Great video. I got it figured out but you are definitely correct in learning to tie it on thicker lines. All I had handy was 15 lbs braid and 10 lbs floro. The floro kept turning on me and bunching up. I drove myself crazy for awhile.
Ive been tying mine with the "FG NO TENSION METHOD" it works like a charm. Im really have a hard time tying the traditional way with tension. Would be awesome for you guys to test the NO TENSION VS WITH TENSION FG knot. To see if theres really a difference.
There isn't much to change on this knot or the video. We still tie and use the same knot today as 2 years ago! If you're confident in it, keep using it!
Strong knot, very great for braid to mono, when you have the time and patience to do it. For me, when I’m out on the kayak and my line breaks off when I’m on a school of reds, I don’t have time to go through all of this.
Be sure to slow the video down and pause it when you need to. Avoid missing steps and continue practicing until you're fully confident in the knot. If you think twice, cut it and retie!
I use an FG knot all the time, I always take a lighter and mushroom (just barely) the leader end just for an extra security but when I started tying it I thought I would never be able to do it but once you do it a couple times it really becomes second nature and it's by far the best
I've been trying the FG knot this year specifically because I want to be able to cast it through guides. I realize this is something you say not to do, but I can't find a better knot for the job. Thanks to your videos, I find the FG knot so easy to tie I could retie every trip or more if I need to. The ability to run an 8' long leader is so much nicer than trying to cast a 2' leader and being careful not to get it in the guides. I am generally tying braid to mono of approximately equal strength, 20# or 30# braid to 20# mono. I ran into the issue you describe here in that the weaker mono's are too flexible to wrap easily under tension. The way I've got around that is by also putting tension on the mono. I have my braid tight using the method you show here, and then I step on the mono on the floor so it can't go anywhere. I then make my wraps with the mono, but every single wrap I am pulling up on it and that is straightening out the line so that it wraps correctly. I have been able to even do 10 pound mono using this method, however, it does not seem like 10 pound mono is strong enough to survive tensioning the knot. By that I mean when I pull them to cinch it down, the mono breaks before I feel the knot is fully tightened. 15# or stronger seems to do fine. Thankfully under 8 pound mono makes a small enough double uni knot they cast pretty good. I tried finishing the FG with that rizzuto finish everyone talks about, and I don't really see the point of it. It seems to add thickness to a knot which I want the thinnest possible. I found your method of doing only half hitches to be the best. I do just like you do, two half hitches first, then tension the knot to set it, cut my mono tag end off, and two more half hitches. Easy as that. The only thing I do in addition is I like to take a lighter and burn the tag end of the braid. I never had any issues without it, but the tag end does fray and look ugly. With it burned it becomes almost invisible and the mushroomed end should be just about impossible to come undone.
I tie a loop into the end of my braid whilst threaded through the rod guides, wind the reel so that the braid reaches about a foot or 18" above the reel, then hook the loop onto the reel handle. Voila, tension that stays put for you to tie your fg knot, whether on a rolling boat or on a windswept shoreline etc.......and it doesn't hurt your pinkie LOL
Been tying this FG for a couple of seasons now with mixed results. This video is by far the best illustration I have seen. I just finished retying all my FGs on all my rigs…stellar results! Thx for the info…
Thank you! Great instructions. It's impossible for me to tie it with anything less than 20 lb. Though. I tried 100 times with 12 lb and no go. It keeps knotting up and/or wrapping wrong direction on braid!?
Iv got a Diawa battler Silverwolf that I do 80% of my fishing with. The FG is the only knot that will cast through the tiny tip guides. 8 lb braid onto 6 or 8 lb fluro.
Instead of pinky, you can wrap the line around the reel handle, or anything really, as long as the rod is not mobile and moving. Then it stays very tight because your pinky isn’t moving.
The leaders I use are so much smaller. I reverse the lines using the braid as the wrap and the fluorocarbon as the stationary line. Works great with no tension on lines.
Well I watched your video on this knot and tried it while watching the video. What I had to understand is you don’t twist both lines u only twist the braid around the leader
Great video! I was trying the FG knot for the first time with 10 lb test and just couldn’t get it. The advice to go to a stronger pound test was the difference maker. Tried it again with 20 lb test and it worked great.
I made a similar comment today. I was practicing with 20lbs braid and 8lbs fluoro. 50% of the time my leader would slip out of the fine grip wraps. Bought 40lbs fluoro today. Absolutely perfect. The 40lbs is too bulky for my medium action setup. I have 20lbs fluoro on order. Can't wait to get my line wet.
it sounds like you aren't getting a good tightening on your leader when you pull the knot tight. It is imperative to get the first couple twists of braid tight to the leader. Try it with some heavier line and leader a few times and see if that helps. 💪
Great question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here: bit.ly/3DT3ps0

Ain't that the truth. I try on 8lb flouro but the leader won't stay straight when your wrapping. The braid doesn't thread around but the leader does... Gonna try with some heavy line.
Once I learned of this knot's strength over the double uni, I wanted to start tying it. I got some left over braid and a bit of fluro and started practicing. Sitting at my desk at work, I've watched and followed along so many different videos trying to figure out how to tie this knot. Almost every time, the leader gets all tangled up and wrapped up around the braid, look like garbage, and always slips when I attempt to bury the loops. You are the first one I have seen to suggest using a large leader, larger than I'd use to fish with, to practice with. I've seen this method, never have I had success until I got some large diameter fluro. I just finished tying my first successful FG knot while re-watching this video. THANK YOU!

I cant tie this not for the life of me. I just can't picture in my mind how I'm suppose to tie it. I can tie an albrieght in the dark with my eyes closed, but I dont understabd the revered twists. Wheb I try it I feel like I am no where close.

I haven't tried this yet but the eay you do it .awesome it seem and look sooooooo much more simpler then many other videos I've seen. So now I'm gonna finally try it. Thank you

Need to show it better when you wrapping the line, very confusing just from you saying back towards me or towards rod, followed it and the line looked nothing like yours
I love what you are showing but you are over using the phrase “ go ahead “ a lot of you guys do that but that to me is the fingernails on the chalkboard.. just saying…..thanks😊
@@Saltstrong thanks for the reply. I did want to tell you that I added a small split shot to the tag end of the floro and it was 10 times easier for old eyes and cold fingers to flip it back and forth. You can even add one to the braid tag and slip them off when complete and put them back in your tackle box 😊

--- have not fished since I was a teen... I'm well... into my 40's now and trying to take my 7 yr old fishing... SO many things have changed in fishing since the 80's. Learning all these new knots, the different kinds of lines!! LOL - it's a great learning experience I'm having fun w/ to teach my son. This knot seems really great - I'm taking the top 5 or 4 knots to teach my son for various applications - this will be one.
I finally figured out what my problem was. I was going from 20lbs braid to 8lbs fluoro. 50% of the time, I could slip the fluoro out of the fine grip wraps. I bought 40lbs fluoro today, to test my knots. On that larger diameter material, no slipping at all. The final setup will be 20lbs braid to 20lbs fluoro. I do enough wraps to have between .5" and .75" of the FG around the leader. With the 40lbs, it doesn't want to flex through the first guide at the rod tip. That'll be less of an issue with the 20lbs leader. I have a week long fishing trip at the end of the month. The first day I'll only use Texas rigs to test the FG. Once I'm comfortable that my knots are good and strong, I'll start tying on more expensive crank baits.
You've never had a breakoff when snagged on the bottom? That's when getting the ultimate strength pays off (no telling how many more lures I've been able to power off the bottom since using the FG compared due to it having a ~30% higher breaking point compared to the Alberto. But for fighting a fish with a properly set drag, neither knot should break.
So here’s my thing the braid is easy I can literally do it in under a min but the half hitch knots I tie just come undone. Like after I tie several since it down and cut the tags I can literally pull it loose. Is that supposed to happen?

Thanks Luke. I did this and lost a few lures in the bushes so here was/is my minor modification:..... After doing the 16 wraps and two half hitches with the leader, tag and main line...........I then do two half hitches with just the main line and the tag line..........then I cut the leader line and do two more half hitches with the just the main line and tag line again to cover any leader. Now no more lures in the bushes and very little tag line exposed. Hope this helps someone
Great tutorial...tied my first two FG knots today! Now if I could just catch my first Redfish...lol. Do you cast the knot through the eyes of the rod, or do you use a shorter leader? Thanks!
Line breaks every time you've tried and used this knot? If it's done correctly, it should be pretty strong! We have several videos on our website if you need more tutorials. Check them out here: www.saltstrong.com/?s=fg+knot
@@Saltstrong Luke that is probably true for the first few minutes after glue is applied but don't forget many if not most hand tied flies whether salt or fresh use a glue base/ head cement with the thread to hook below tying material and also for the whip finish of the thread around the jig head. Thanks for all your great content!!!
No disrespect to you but after trying again for entire weekend, i was still unable to tie this knot without the line not laying straight, i had to give up. The line would break when i put tension on it to tighten it up Lso would take me over 10 minutes to tie it. Practice didnt help me at all. Im extremely impressed how you can manipulate your fingers to tie this knot. Actually Incredible. I had to use my mouth as well but the knot just would not hold. Still love your videos
Question for you! At what point can’t the floro sides pound test be too small of line to tie this knot. I have tried tying 15lb braid to 8-10lb floro and it pulls out every time. Thank you in advance!

Took me several times of rewatching. I was getting the direction of the leader around the braid incorrect. If you ever make another video, maybe consider visual aids or slow motion so folks clearly understand the direction. I think I got it right, but hope to find out for sure this weekend in Tampa Bay!
I struggled with the FG until I found my man Luke doing the pinky method!! Used to cringe hearing the double uni click through the guides on every cast and hated casting with the braid on my finger. My only modification is I use wooden dowels to lock it in, a little easier on my old hands. Thanks again Luke, great vid!!!
Hello question about finishing the FG knot I have seen a few times that there are people. smear that or wax or super glue on the tag end of the braid, can you also use resin for it? and then dry with the UV lamp
I have spent over 5 hrs learning this knot. Finally had it looking tight and perfect and once again the flurocarbon leader slips right through. Did 16 wraps and increased the half hitches to five each and it still slips. 15 lb braid to 10 lb flurocarbon line.
Hey thanks man, you did a great job. This knott is easier than I thought. It's taking practice, but with each knott, I keep getting better. I caught a 48^ Leopard Shark last night, and my fg held. The double uni I was using would have most likely failed.
Great tutorial. My first couple tries worked great and felt like I had it down. However, since my first 2, I cannot get the braid to bite. What would cause some of my knots to bite and others not?
