I just did a teardown on a pop 1.4 i picked up for cheap!! blown head gasket but the rest of the car is immaculate! same prob with bolts, not a reverse thread,, I drilled the heads off, center punch them, start with a small bit then progress up.I used 3 different sizes..when you get close you will begin to see where the head and the shank meet, put the torx bit on and snapped is easy!! you will be able to remove the shank with you fingers!!!!go straight and slow, and use good bits!..this motor got really hot, sludgey oil and really burnt,,100k miles, bearings and journals were perfect!!and within spec..remarkable little engine.. good luck!!

I've got the 13 Dart SXT with this engine, im happy I finally get to see what the Inside of my engine looks like. I've been considered buying a used engine and doing a full rebuild on it and dropping it in my car, mine has 160k on it but the cars flawless inside and out so it'd be nice to give her a heart transplant to be sure she's good to go for a long time. What's the cost of the rebuild for you guys so far? Also, Im subscribing for sure now that I see the 80s turbo dodges in the back! I have a csx, chargers, omnis, a few Daytonas, a lancer and a few neons myself so I'm glad I found the channel bros!

nice to see a american work on this engine. Im from argentina. I got the 1.3 16v NA without the variable cam timing thing and these engine can easly pull 500000km without burning oil. Im planing on swap the 1.3 for this 1.4 engine. One thing i want to clarify that the engine you guys got was alredy open, that oil pickup isnt original.

This is a US spec engine. It's not 100% identical to the ROW spec engines. Parts suppliers can differ. What is true though is that these engines are very durable if serviced right.

I happen to have the twin cylinder version of this engine in my Alfa. Basically the same one, but cut halfway. The multi air unit is a very fragile piece, it’s a hassle.
@kolbpilot
@kolbpilot 4 года назад
Hey man, (and helper), thanks for the tear down. I just picked up a '12 Fiat 500 & am learning it. Been reading up on the engine, seems plenty durable. I've a non-turbo engine, but as far as I can tell, the non-turbo gets all the piston oil cooling goodies & same forged crank & rods as the turbo version. Only the compression ratio is different (well, & maybe the cam profile). I imagine the engine is stroked to its limit for as much low end torque possible. Honda likes that undersquare formula as well. I find it amusing it's called a 1.4. it's only 1368 cc. Not even a 1375, which would get it three quarters of the way to a 1.4. No, I call it a a big 1.3. A 1.3 plus, if you will.
@kolbpilot
@kolbpilot 4 года назад
ps, I was wrong about the non-turbo version. It gets a cast crankshaft & rods, not the forged as the turbo gets. Same with the oil squirters, etc., turbo only. But, cast is lighter than forged, so it benefits there, as well as still being balanced & a high compression ratio. I also see this engine has been replaced with the new 1.3, a fresh, all aluminum design.

@angelopea8334
@angelopea8334 3 года назад
The T-jet and the Multiair are the exact same engine, the only thing to change from one another is the cylinder head which is a dual overhead camshaft for the T-jet. The belt-driven valvetrain mechanism is also the same (one belt-driven pulley that spins the exhaust camshaft) and the intake camshaft is moved by a gear coupling in the opposite side of the cylinder head.
@angelopea8334
@angelopea8334 3 года назад
Also the T-jet (turbocharged) has fixed valve timing and lift.
@5Dale65

I have a Fiat Stilo with this kind of engine. It's a 1.4 16v very similiar to the one you have. But mine is without the turbo stuff, just plain old naturally aspirated 90 hp motor. Those are really strong, never ever heard of a one that threw a rod or sth like it. But those have a big disadvantage which is just EATING OIL!!! So I'm not surprised you found oil in one of the cylinders. Valve stem seals go bad and the rings get stuck in the piston grooves, if oil isn't changed often. 6-8k miles should be the interval for oil changes.

Amazing how many American parts are on this engine, as with the oil pump. I wonder who supplies the water pump ?
@kolbpilot
@kolbpilot 13 дней назад
I'll answer my own question. Both pumps come from the supplier you mentioned (I forget the name). And the oil pump is old school pressed in the block as was common with Chrysler cars of the '80s. The block also weighs 6 pounds lighter than the Polish version using Wisconsin iron. So there are some minute differences between the two blocks. But the American version is still a FIRE block all day long.

You guys are great. I hope you can help me with a problem. I was priming my 1.4 multiair brick by pumping oil into the ball port under the oil fill cap when the ball disappeared. The engine started and shot a stream or oil straight up to the hood. My question is where did that ball valve go and will it hurt anything being in the engine? If it were any other engine it would end up in the oil pan not sure on this one. I can plug the port from the top so I am not worried about that. Any help would be great.
@YostBuilt

id suggest ..pulling the lower oil pan and seeing if it made it down! ! the oil pickup can catch it too!

This seems identical to the 1,368 cc F.I.R.E Engine of Fiat. I own a vehicle that uses this Engine. Not too refined, but old school, and I guess reliable. Tell me how the repair works go. I'd like to know what were the parts you replaced, and which were the parts that wore out. What was the last ODO reading on the engine before it was taken off anyway? I'm just curious, very intrigued, and genuinely interested. Thanks a ton!!!

@varmastiko2908
@varmastiko2908 9 месяцев назад
It is a F.I.R.E engine with the multiair valve actuation unit added. Basically the cylinder head is the only major difference to a regular F.I.R.E engine, or more accurately to the T-Jet variants of it. You even use the same cam timing gear on this unit even though the regular T-Jet has a twin cam setup and the Multiair has electrohydraulic valves on the intake side.
