Fiat told us that you don't need to be rich to buy a great car and the Tipo is a proof. Unique style, italian-made cars always give you satisfactions. I am proud of my 2002 Fiat Punto.

one thing that annoys me a little with reviews is when they complain about black dreary interior..I agree however so does every German premium car but will you ever hear those words there?

German premiums usually have various colour accents and metals that break up the dash. The design also has quite an impact.

I hired a new 2017 1.6 diesel Tipo for a week, and I was actually really impressed with it. Much prefer it to my Cooper and 08 Focus. The ride was fairly quiet and comfortable. The sat nav was decent, and I especially liked that it updated the speed limit on the go and had live functions. The touch screen was easy to navigate to change radio station. The seats were comfortable - which is very important to me as I have back issues. I didn't even have a problem with the gearbox, which I thought was quite smooth. I think I'll be picking one of these up as my next car.... I covered 180 miles and only used 4 fuel pips on the fuel gauge.

Fiat, Renault, Peugeot, mazda, mitsubishi and toyota are ahead of Vw, Opel, Ford and Audi when it comes to interior and comfort. Of course the Vw Opel Ford and audi all have the much more expensive models with the nice interior which is what is used when making comparisons in all these reviews but their base models are horrific.

No, it's not related to the Dart in any way. I wonder why Fiat didn't try to sell a Europeanised Dart in the EU though, instead of relying solely on the 500 and its variants for sales.

I so love when automotive journalists complain about scratchy plastics without any background in material science. Scratchy plastics are great for you! They do not belong in a living space like a bedroom, but they are ideal for high-durability uses like transportation - those shiny plastics used in premium models will quickly deteriorate and will look like a piece of junk 10 years from now.

Some of those negative points are nitpicking. The interior is fine. The stalks are fine. I only had radio on my version which was great, but a little too far away to be operated properly and safely. The ride is lovely and the suspension is the best I have been in (I have driven plenty of Fords). Boot space is good though my Mondeo was a beast in that department. The main issue for me was the head clearance which was just ok, but the visor feels an inch too low, so you feel like you are hunching under it alittle bit. I am 6 1" so not massive. It feels ok once you get used to it and overall I'd give the whole package a high rating. I loved driving it. And it's a very smart looking thing which I admired every time I looked at it.

I'm glad I never saw this review before I bought my Tipo or I would have never had got one I've had mine over a year and a half with 35000 miles on the clock now and I'm very happy with the car and I've never had any trouble with changing gears fast or slow with no crunching also my son who only 13 learn to drive it so again I don't now what that man is going on about the steering and gear change being vague obviously fiat it's not paying him enough.ps 10 months on and nearly 45000 still going and there nothing wrong with the storks not broke or falling off lol.... UP DATE Still going 14/9/21 did have a glow plugs replace this year £130 fitted but still run ok and a bit of wear on door card nothing to worry about and I don't now how it happened but had to have a new rear window mechanism with motor I don't know if it had been forced £125 new fitted my self 51000 miles now this man is talking crap lol🤣😂😁 AND THE STORKS STILL WORKING 🤣🤣😂

I have a 2017 Tipo Lounge. I think its a great looking hatchback. (Which these reviewers never mention) I don't get the negatives he bangs on about. Small screen - no problem, its responsive and easy to use. Steering and gear change - no problem. I can throw my tipo into corners and smoothly change gears without complaint. Some body roll sure, but its not built for it, so thats fair enough. I love my Tipo to be honest.

Same here, knocks spots off the 2016 Golf we had which spent more time back at the VW stealer than on our drive, the Golf handled like a ferry yet still managed to have the ride of a toddlers go kart and drunk like Oliver Read.

Fiat cars always get a hard time from the bias British motoring press, they tell you it's crap but when eventually you get your own, you find it fun, reliable, and characterful and nowhere near as bad as they said. Instead of testing the dull diesel he should have done the fastest petrol, that would have put a smile on his face.

Fiats are not reliable, and the most powerful, ‘fun to drive’ petrol has 120hp. No car enthusiast is gonna get fooled by that. There’s a brand new Tipo hatch (same color as the one in this video), and the owner has already experienced an engine issue.

It has more to do with the looks, the soft plastics make the car look more rounded and luxurious, even if you are never ever going to touch the base of the centre console ever again after you buy the car.

@@ANDREWSAMY562 It only happens in 1st and 2nd. I got mine second-hand so i'm guessing the problem has something to do with the previous owner being a little too aggressive with the stick. Also my own shifting probably didn't help, at least until i got used to treating it a little nicer lol. Apart from that, 45.000 kilometers and still running very smoothly. It's really a great bang for your buck.

I used to work for a company that rented these out, and it gave me a prejudice against Fiat. All the feedback about them was 'gutless'. When I was buying a used car, I'm really glad my brother talked me into going to look at a 2008 Fiat Bravo, because it is better in every respect. Really lovely car to drive, beautiful, and solid reliability even though it's pushing 11 years old. Kind of tragic Fiat never got the recognition/sales they deserved for the Bravo, but good for me because it kept the prices down.

Rino Di Berardino No it isnt. It's the same size or bigger than most after market sat navs anyway and bigger than on-board radio displays of recent cars. Not every car has a huge screen bolted on the dash,and indeed not everyone wants one. Using the screen size as a point of ridicule is peurile.

I think you work for some German or french car's OEM. Try to touch the VW plastics...are the same in quality as the Tipo. Unbelievable how the unfair marketing is powerful.In my opinion this is an honest car with the quality/price ration far better than any other German cars.

100% agree, considered buying a golf yrs ago privately, the advert only showed pics of the exterior, it had a really nice trim compared to some of the other models which caught my eye but its interior was horrific, the cloth seats looked and felt so cheap, the seat design itself was cheap and had no support, similar to what you get in a van, the steering wheel was hard plastic, there were no mod tech which most rivals basic models had as standard. Other models were much the same unless you went for the top spec with the bigger engine. Audi and Opel are the very same.

of course, because the modell in this video is not the top trip. top trim 5 door/wagon always had a 7 inch screen the smaller 5 inch like this one was for the lower trim or for the top trim in the 4 door version

You can get a fully loaded Tipo station wagon for 21 000 € over here. Looks nice, feels nice, has all the necessary bells and whistles surrounding safety and comfort. In my books one of the best budget cars which don't look or feel budget at all.

Really good cars, we've had from one new, drove lovely, great handling, not one problem, great on fuel, cheap to service, buying another that's proof. So much better than the 2016 Golf we had, which was dismal on every level. We have the 1.4 mpi and the engine noise is sublime.

looks pretty nice, has room inside, great mpg and it's cheap, so i welcome this car. all that smart features are just pumping up car prices. i always wondered who can buy new focus or golf or 3 series, i shit you now, it's a mystery to me

indeed, usually companies buy such cars for their employees because they often get huge discounts (I know a guy who owns several restaurants, mercedes regularly sells him top premium cars for some 80-90% discounts and then he lets top management have all those new years/christmas/company anniversary parties, free vouchers for business lunches over the year etc...everybody wins)...funny thing about EuroNCAP regarding Tipo is that one simple security pack for 250€ gives it +1 star (from 3 to 4), that pack does not help you at all, judges simply value it that much in their tables...I would not buy HatchBack but sedan, thats the best value for money car in its segment (which is mostly Citroen C Elysee, Peugeot 301 and Lada Vesta in my area)

I have never drank from anything larger than a 500 ml bottle in a car so why are reviewers obsessed with the fitting large size of bottles in doors. If you have 3 adults in the back it is usually as a lift back from the pub which is better than walking. So many of these reviews appear to be biased ( for whatever reason) to a few brands of car.

my father have the 1.0 ford focus 2017 with 100 hp and I have the Fiat Tipo 1.6 120 hp Diesel. I chose the Tipo any day why you ask ?? well Space Tipo wins by miles to the focus, the diesel engine in the focus is worse than the tipo fuel economy is the same but i have more torque 320 Mm for the Tipo and 270 Nm if I what to do a overtake no problem Tipo interior well in the portugal I have the 7" display with tomtom nav ( making the layout much better ) much better than the sync of ford and yes much better looking than the 5 inch display you have in the Tipo review car . but there is plastics!! really!! and in the focus is not the same same places as the tipo soft in the top hard in bottom .Tipo is aimed for comfort not for racing like the focus indeed cornering in the focus is like driving on ralis but who cares about that i am not a rally driver and Tipo corner very well is a cheap car aimed for that it has everything you need.My father words " if was today I would buy the tipo instead of the focus mainly because of the baggage is small for this class. the price difference in portugal is not that different for the diesel 24700 euros lounge trim (rear camera+ nav+auto a/c+parking sensors+electric lumber suppot+ Bluetooth+ auto wiper and lights ) for the tipo with a lot of standard equipment and 27500 for focus Titanium trim in lower equipment. my final coment will be Tipo is a car aimed for comfort with space and with normal and pratical gadgets not with fancy stuff instead with gadgets you will never use

Miguel Branco 1.6 Multijet by Fiat is one of the best small Diesel engine: great torque for its "size", good fuel economy and even silent.

Indeed And in the review what we are comparing ?? we have four brands Ford, Fiat, Opel, Volkswagen main rivals i guess , the question is how can we do a affordable car with only the stuff you really need for me in my option Fiat hit the target. Give me 3000 euros and will give you a 30000 euros car no problem but give me 20000 and make a 30000 euros car that is what fiat did with this Tipo you pay few for a lot of a car and is said the review. Problem people want brand, name. I for myself want a car to drive from point A to B with comfort and with some power that was reason I brought the 1.6 instead the 1.3 diesel with fuel economy and with low price maintenance ( people do not talk about fiat problems the others brands also has it the difference is you pay more to buy the car and to fix in the others brands )

Love the interior and exterior...and I just dont get the "premium feel" and soft touch hype of many German cars; if all you do is touch your car interior, you got more serious problems 😂....also, the more luxurious wood and aluminum feel just like plastic, Id prefer some tough, uv-resistant plastics rather than foam-embossed vinyl that scratches or cracks after a few years.

While the Skoda Rapid and FIAT TIPO are sold here in effluent Europe, I believe they are conceptually intended for emerging markets such as India and South America, just like the VW FOX and FIAT PALIO were, which explains the material quality and soft suspension and steering.

This car is really popular in Poland and has some great reviews. Compared to other budget compact cars like Peugeot 301, Citroen C-Elysse, Skoda Rapid, it had better build quality, is roomier and actually looks really good outside. What more would an average non-enthusiast car buyer need? Also the engines are quite reliable older Fiat constructions so i feel like it is good to note that as well.

Only Punto and 500 are sold in Brazil compared with the European line up. There's a Fiat called Uno that is very similar to Panda in design, but the platform and the interior are much worse.

Simon George Manufacturers such as VW go to a great deal of trouble re. interior quality, real and perceived, including with plastics. It's very much part of the brand image and what people make part of their purchase decision on. VW charge a premium as a result. So yes, it matters to some people and reviewers are therefore right to comment on it.

sparky83 I only meant that if there's a part of a review that you're not fussed about, you can ignore it. (I zone out at finely-detailed analyses of performance on ordinary hatchbacks etc.). I think FIAT usually get a tough time generally - their public image is not good, for whatever reason (you can see that in comments to videos). On the other hand, it was good press reports of the 500 that made me 'risk it' and I ended up buying two in succession... I think there is too much focus on German cars & they are forgiven for faults too easily.

sparky83, you're right, if you want to make it in the British motoring press then it is a requirement that you tell everyone fiats and Alfas are crap and Volkswagens and Audis are wonderful. This is Bullshit of course, but this nonsense was established decades ago and it's too well intrenched in the rule book to be changed. But it's good at the end of the day because it keeps second hand values are low, meaning those true petrol heads like us, get the best cars on the road at low prices.

Nice car, nice review. However, I wish Fiat were a bit more daring in the styling on this like they were with the 1988-95 Tipo. From the rear quarters it looks a bit similar to the Nissan Almera I currently drive. That's a 17 year old design! Even the rear doors look almost identical.

The whole point of this car is how cheap it is. A dealer local to me is selling the 1.6 diesel Easy Plus version for £10,995. That's for a pre-registered brand new car with delivery miles. Now that's VERY cheap for a car in this class...less than many comparably specified superminis in the class below. A similiar spec slower Ford Focus 1.5 TDCi pre-registered is around £14,495. And look at the Focus' interior! It ain't all that!! So if these things do mid 50s mpg, drive averagely and are comfy and are that price....they're a good car for what they are.

The new Tipo is really not as bad a car as he is making out, especially when you consider the price of sub £15k new, which is Fiesta money these days. It has its bad points like any car, such as the plastics are hard and cheap feeling, the radio interface is poor and a car like this needs parking sensors as standard in 2018. Also, I hear safety needs improving too but I’m sure Fiat will address this at the model develops through its life cycle. I managed to get an average of 39mpg combined driving in the 1.4 petrol, which is fine given that it’s Focus-sized. The gearbox is smooth enough too as is steering and pedal weight. I really think he must have just jumped out of a Mercedes or Audi to come to the verdict that it’s cheap and nasty, because for an economy car it really isn’t.

You have tested a basis model. It' a budget car, made in Turkei. Here in Switzerland its street price is 50% less then a normal WV Golf! For people that won't spend too much money it's not bad at all. Roomy and with much place for baggage at a competitive street price. Plastic .... have you seen the last WV cars? Only Mazda make cars with good interiors in the C segment. Must I pay double for a bigger tablet? Is a Ford better made? In my opinion not....

Prejudiced British motor press with their German, French cars and Ford bias make me laugh, what a bunch of clowns ! I recently bought a Peugeot 308, I when to look at umpteen Renault Clio, Megane and Peugeot hatchbacks - which all had PLASTIC steering wheels - in order to get a leather steering wheel on a French car you need to buy the top of the range model. Wished I had bought the new Tipo - the interior is very stylish and slick when compared to the new Ford Focus - which is dull grey cheap plastic as well ! Here in Spain the Fiat dealerships are asking 9,800€ for a brand new Tipo with alloys, cruise and air-con all included. Bargain.

Personally, ive been driving Fiats for most of ,my 20s, took me and my friends all around Europe during summers, never ever had a damn single issue, yet that "fix it again" absurdity keeps living over the centuries.

I feel that the FIAT has gone complete nuts. I've had two FIATs in India. One was a Punto and other was an excellent sedan the LINEA which I bought back in 2016 and till day, it's one of the best car's I've owned. The engine is quite reliable, interiors were of topnotch quality, the suspension is excellent, mileage unrivaled in the segment and if there were any complaints, it was just lacking the grunt in the lower revs. But, instead of addressing the issues, they just ran away from such a huge market. I really pity the team - FIAT for not working just a little bit more to tap into the market.

As an American, It's interesting that the most powerful engine has 120 horsepower. Over here on the US, our cars in that class have 150 horsepower on average give or take. The Honda Civic has 152 and the Mazda 3 has 155. I'm not sure if those numbers are the same in Europe though. I know there are probably more engine choices such as a diesel, which we here in the US don't really see unless it's a pickup truck or a make of car that's offered a diesel option for ages like VW. You wouldn't be able to get the Mazda 3 in a diesel here for example.

yeah but i'ts much lighter than average vehicle sold in the US, i had the tipo sedan, 4.53m of lenght, 1.3 turbodiesel (so heavier than base model 1.4 N/A gasoline engine) and with me and 3/4 of fuel tank the weight is exactly just 1310kg the 1.6 mjet 120hp oh this test car get 200km/h on gps of top speed, not a sport car but not exactly a slow one. btw no, honda civic and mazda 3 sold in europe also are available with less powerfull engines, for example 122hp for mazda and 129 for honda, (previous models even less powerfull base engine)

I find this car a strange choice for Fiat. You'd think with their past reputation for unreliability, they'd want to maximise the quality of the cabin and take an initial hit on margins. That, coupled with their experience of how fantastically a well designed and built car like the 500 will sell, this is just mad!
