ABOUT VIDEO
Step by step tutorial about how to make fiberglass parts with help of 3D printed mold.
I will show you how to model a mold of a simple shape in AutoCAD, print its elements on a 3D printer, assemble and process the mold for laminating, and then use it to make light composite parts by example lightweight SAPI armor plate for protective motorcycle equipment.

FAQ UPD: February 9, 2023 Guys, thank you all for your questions and advices. You are the best! Alex I cant see your videos? Guys, please write in comments if you have any problems with access to my channel and videos. I noticed that during last year most of my subscribers cant see last videos. What about the Iron Man suit? I'm working on stuffing. The main problems are power, thrust, and heavy installation weight. The full metal shell is a bit tight. When I made a head and rode in it, I realized how heavy the suit would really be. Actually, the composite season is consequence) But do I understand correctly that if I make a suit from a composite, it will not be considered that I made a suit?) Why don't you fire fiberglass before laminating? Because for some reason I did not know this) Seriously. Thanks for your comments. Now I will burn it all the time. During production, lubricants are added to the fiberglass, most often paraffin, so that the fabric does not fray. This paraffin impairs resin adhesion and penetration into layers, weakening the structure. Therefore, before laminating with epoxy, we need to burn the fabric with a burner. The fabric smokes, smells of paraffin and becomes more transparent. Or we laminate with polyester resin, which dissolves the lubricant itself. Do I need to turn the sheets at 45 degrees? If there is a need to achieve stability of the part to torsion load, then yes. In the case of a shockproof plate, I considered that this was not necessary. How many layers does it take for a plate to stop a bullet? About 30 layers are used in Kevlar armor plates. Kevlar is much stronger than fiberglass. Therefore, making armor plates from fiberglass is not justified. They will be too thick and heavy. Kevlar is available on Aliexpress. Given the price per meter, one plate is obtained from $ 500-600. How many layers do you need for an e-bike frame? If you take the same structural fiberglass, then from 3 to 5 layers. Depends on geometry. In any case, before making the frame, you need to make a pipe probe from a composite with the same cross section and do strength tests. A little more will be in part 4. Do you use the metal mesh you showed in the shot? Sometimes I use. It can be laid not over the entire surface, but for example along the perimeter to strengthen the edges. On the plus side, it adds stiffness and the details don't paint at the edges under load. Of the minuses, the grid fits harder than fiberglass. What printers do I have? I use Creality Ender 3, Ender 5 and CR10 printers. Ender 3 is the cheapest and most versatile. Ender 5 is more expensive and the table is slightly larger, but the main thing is that the table only moves up / down, which makes it much easier to print high details. CR-10 is also normal, due to the huge table, but you have to conjure with adhesion every time. And again - the larger the table, the stronger the garage is heated. In short, Ender 5 is my favorite. Want to learn more information about printing - @FranklyBuilt is unleashed source of practical knowledges. youtube.com/@FranklyBuilt About PLA and ABS. Apparently I got a promotion on local market and PLA was much cheaper than ABS. Therefore, I bought it 8 kg and still use it. If we are talking about this particular detail, then there is no difference at all. I don't like ABS because of the fuss with adhesion, especially on the CR-10, which has a glass table. Even if the details are very tiny, then PLA gives out finer detail than ABS. Why should the weight ratio of resin and fabrics be the same? I took measurements of weight, strength and different ratios. As a result, 50/50 gives the best ratios. Strength tests will be in 4 parts. Why didn't you use vacuum lamination? I have a vacuum pump and everything for vacuum lamination. I'll show you in the next videos. This time I wanted to get by with a minimum of tools to show how simple the technology is. Every day I watch how various unnecessary stuff are printed on 3D printers. I want to show how applied a 3D printer can become if printing is supplemented with composite materials. Why do you need composites when you can just print a thicker part with 100% infill? Composites give better strength to weight ratios. A thick part with 100% filling will in any case be inferior in strength to composites. Have you tried carbon threads filament? Yes, I tried. The products are stronger than ABS, PLA and Nylon. But the main point of carbon fiber is the strength of carbon threads. That is, the part is strong due to the fact that solid carbon threads pass through the entire part. If the same thread is chopped into pieces and added to a thread for a 3D printer, then the whole point disappears. What software do you use? Video editing Final Cut Pro X v.10.4.3 www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/ 3D modeling www.blender.org/ www.autodesk.de/products/autocad/overview 3D Modeling AutoCAD 2018 Pre-print slicer ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura Graphic raster editor www.gimp.org/ What are you shooting on? The weight of the suit should not be so bad once you factor in the controls for the emg sensors, the fact that it will be able to support itself, and most thrusters have more than enough horsepower for flight. Also the total weight of the suit would only be around 200 pounds or so if it's made of metal.
@brennansander6165
@brennansander6165 Год назад
Oh and the properties of composite layer will help determine how heavy the outer layer will be considering that it will help reflect the damage. Basically the inner layer(composite) will help absorb and reflect the damage that comes into contact with the outer metal shell.
@brennansander6165
@brennansander6165 Год назад
Composite suits are still suits,they just won't be nearly as strong or tough. And the inner part of the suit will be more exposed to bullets and blunt weapons

Very nice video as always, you should invest in a vacuum setup to make the composites. Can be used to de-gas the resin and then with a vacuum bag setup will make the end product also more compact with less excess resin and should help increase the quality and strength of the end product.

@rjg02005
@rjg02005 Год назад
@@nastywrestler 3D prints can be made using either solid fill or a lattice geometry that fills some percentage of the volume between the walls of the print. You're right that if air is trapped in the print, introducing this into a vacuum could cause an issue. That said, if a solid print is done, any tiny air pockets will be negligibly small and not pose a problem at complete vacuum.

How much pascal can this combination resist without going past the failure point. Calculated from the perspective of a sudden impact force. Like the pin drop test you did in your material video. And what is the scalability regarding adding layers, does the added resistance per layer added diminish? To state simple is it more resembling of a square root curve or more linear. And what is the total Newton that is transmitted to the body behind it? And lastly, does the electroplating process add any additional benefits or would simple metal paint do the job at this point? To add some background info. I am building a modernized samurai suite that will be used in a theatrical play (it can not be overly heavy) but due to budget, it will also be used outside the play in a life demonstration at the local Renaissance fair. Where we are putting up 4 era's of armour technology against each other. 500 Anno Domini (AD) 1000 AD 1500 AD and last but not least the one i am making 2000 AD. I am allowed to use all modern knowledge so these past few videos are an absolute gold mine. However, I am not in a place where my current composite can handle sword slashes and stabs and the impact of a rubber/steel blunt point arrow. So the answering of these questions could reall help me flush out my own needs. @ALEXLAB

@NobleGas_54
@NobleGas_54 Год назад
Alex uses an aluminum oxidization reaction to generate hydrogen without an electric current/battery. When you put raw aluminum in water, the aluminum atoms steal the oxygen atoms from the water molecules producing aluminum oxide and hydrogen. But to keep the reaction going, he needs to dissolve the layer of rust that rapidly builds up on the aluminum so he treats the water with a strong acid making aluminum waste and more water. Aluminum + Water = Aluminum oxide + Hydrogen 2 Al + 3 H₂O → Al₂O₃ + 3 H₂ Aluminum oxide + Nitric acid = Aluminum nitrate + Water Al₂O₃ + HNO₃ → Al(NO₃)₃ + H₂O The water level in the reaction tank stays the same but it starts to get cloudy and white as aluminum nitrate particles build up on the bottom.
