Fibre Folk is my new video podcast - a digital crafting circle complete with cosy and spooky folk tales!
Something a little different for this video! I've always loved the connection between crafting, cosiness and folklore. Join for craft inspired folk tales while I work on a knitting project! I'm hoping this can be our digital fireside. I'd love this to be a community thing, like a real crafting circle - so let me know what you're working on and if there are any tales you remember or have read about!
In this first episode I'm working on an Icelandic yoke jumper, and telling the story of the Three Spinners..
Let's get cosy and enjoy storytelling while working on our crafts.
Lorna x

Okay absolutely love this. Just love. I didn’t work on a project while watching this because I was nap trapped under my sleeping baby however I did trim his fingernails while he snoozed which felt very therapeutic with you in the background. Keep it up!

I love the overlap between fibre and storytelling so much! I tend to knit while playing dungeons and dragons so I've managed to carve out a little story and knitting space in my real life so it's wonderful to find a digital version of that.

What a lovely way to spend time with you and our crafts. I thoroughly enjoyed your tale, while I was knitting and watching you knit too. Thank you! I look forward to more - especially the creepier ones! And tales of the woods, witches, fae folk as well. I’ve subscribed. X

As a spinner, with some experience with flax, I really appreciated this. I was working on a crochet project, as I'm teaching myself to crochet. This was fun, please do it again!

Oh, lovely! I went to a flax spinning workshop recently where we used drop spindles - it was tricky to get the hang of it, but fun! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊 I've done three of these so far, and do plan more (although not every 2 weeks like I originally said, they take a lot more research 😊)

I'm so glad to have been recommended this! This is just what I've been missing. I really enjoyed this tale as well. All the fairytales I heard as a kid focused on the consequences when things go wrong, and I think its interesting that in this one, everything turned out okay. Sarah gets just what she wants and the queen may never discover her lie since her husband forbade her from spinning.

What a fantastic idea for a knitting podcast! Loved listening to this episode while knitting my first raglan sweater. In terms of the story, I thought it was really interesting that Sarah wasn’t punished for her dishonesty at the end of the tale! With so many folk tales horrendous consequences ensue from any type of behaviour, especially committed by women, which is not in-keeping with moral norms, so this piqued my interest! I loved your thoughts on the cultural representation of spinning. Excited for the next podcast episode :)

Thanks so much! You're absolutely right, and I'm always surprised by the ending of this one. Being dishonest or making a bargain are normally sure fire ways to bring trouble upon yourself (or even just being a woman in a folktale, as you say). It's why I feel the emphasis is more on spinning, rather than Sarah's behaviour. I think she was very lucky!

I love this concept! I have enjoyed it very much while I knit my new vest in moss green alpaca yarn to keep me warm as I milk my cow. I didn't like the fact Sarah was rewarded for lies and laziness but I resonate with the concept that hard work is valued even if you may end up less glamourous in the eyes of others. Thanks for sharing your cozy crafting👩‍🌾👩‍🌾👩‍🌾

What a fantastic idea for a podcast! I tuned in as I working on a colorwork cardigan and this was both so soothing and intriguing to listen to. I think it's really interesting to hear an old folktale with so many points of caution the audience would easily recognize (namely lying/dishonesty) and yet the protagonist faces none of the typical backlash. It definitely has me agreeing that the focus of the tale is on the act and industry of spinning itself rather than the characters' morality. I find it a funny little detail that with a different telling of this story, Sara and her chain of events could be reinterpreted as witty or even sly rather than... lucky? So interesting that via her agreement with the spinsters, she's honest with them of both her deception of the queen and her own inability to do the task at hand due to her own laziness, and also follows through(!) on the terms of their agreement! Sara could've easily been depicted as someone who tricked the women for her own personal gain, or made much more grandiose lies to convince the queen/distract from figuring out Sara's laziness, and yet Sara is instead shown to be a very average, very human young girl. I had never heard this story, perhaps being from the US, but I really enjoyed hearing your telling of it over companionable crafting! The comments section really does feel like we're all working to weave this story's many ends in together ❤

Hiya. Loved this video. Wanted to tell you that I thought of a story I loved as a child, there was a beautiful cartoon of it I watched over and over: Hans Christian Anderson’s Seven Swans, in it, the girl must keep silent as she picks, spins?, weaves seven shirts from nettles for her brothers. I have a big nettle patch today, that I grew from one plant! It’s my only successful gardening. I eat it, dye with it, it’s also medicine, dense with minerals, but fresh: it stings. The girl, couldn’t even cry out as she plucked the nettle-if she made a sound her brothers would die. ALSO thought of some Appalachian haint tales (where I live in Western NC, USA) by Sheila Kay Adams-I think there’s audio of them on NPR-thanks again, hoping for more!

Hey, thanks so much for your comment, I loved reading it. I know the seven swans tale, but how you just told it was beautiful. I always find it an interesting one, because I know people who do actually spin nettles, and one who made a dress from them! He also made a lovely film called The Nettle Dress. There are some brilliant Appalachian tales, lots of very spooky ones! I'd love to learn more about them though, so thank you for the tip 😊

Hello from Australia. This is brilliant! Love it so much. I’ve just watched all your making videos and love your projects and aesthetic. Also your calm vibes. You’ve inspired me to do more sewing and to think more about styling my handmade pieces more thoughtfully. This podcast is so wonderful. What a great idea. So cosy and relaxing. Perfect to knit to. I’ll be sure to tell all my knitting friends about it. Thank you ❤ Have a great day.

For me the moral of the story is to keep promises. Because Sara kept her promise to the three spinners it all got sorted out in the end and Saras secret never will be revealed… I love this kind of storytelling episode! Looking forward to more like this! A suggestion: is it possible to omit the background music during the story? My brain can’t seem to cope well with that… (the wave/wind sound is fine but the guitar tones kind of get too similar to voice frequencies I hypothesise) Love from Sweden /Anna

Hi Anna - thanks for this 😊 interesting to hear your thoughts on the story, I imagine you're right and that's a big part of the outcome! Thanks also for your point on the music, that's really useful to know and I'll adjust the next one - hopefully coming later this week!

Spinsters ( unmarried women) were called so as spinning was how they would support themselves without a husband to financially support them.

I've always felt like this story is about class. While Sarah is a peasant, it matters that she's lazy and doesn't spin. It will have a direct impact on her community and her mother. But then, to the Queen, the lie about her industriousness suggests she'll make a good wife for one of her sons (although presumably not the heir). Wives who work hard are valuable. I think there's even an old folk song from this era that basically warns men not to only look for beauty in a wife because spinning will make her ugly anyway - but that's aimed at the general population, not royalty. BUT - once she becomes a princess, transcending her original class, she's no longer expected to be a productive member of society in the same way as she was as a peasant. In fact, her entire value has shifted to being linked to her youth and beauty. The prince doesn't care if she's industrious or a brilliant spinner, he wants a beautiful wife he can show off to ambassadors and other powerful men, and he can demand that because he's a prince! So spinning stops mattering. Also, the three spinners seem perfectly happy unmarried and going around spinning flax, so I suppose I'd argue they're the real winners here, especially since they got to attend a bougie wedding banquet!
@threadandyarn
@threadandyarn Год назад
This is really interesting, thank you for sharing - I enjoyed reading your comment. I think you're right. The focus never seems on morality or Sarah's choices, I think it's more the perception of spinning and what it represents in society. I hadn't thought of it in terms of class, but that really makes sense!
