In her keynote address at the inaugural Fibromyalgia Health & Wellbeing Summit (Dublin, 2018) Prof. Andrea Nicol provided historical perspectives on fibromyalgia and how recent rigorous and robust research methods have been used to determine what is felt to be the cause of fibromyalgia - central nervous system pain amplification.
She also discussed well-described treatment options for fibromyalgia in addition to exploring emerging concepts and treatments for this challenging and complex pain syndrome.

@@Pauline_mrt The very latest theories in Chronic Pain are that trauma , including psychological, car accidents, surgeries, etc can bring on Fibro. If you go to the Curable page on FB and listen to interviews by Dr. John Stracks, you'll begin to see the mind-body connection. The Curable app, $5 a month, is extremely helpful. Just my 2 cents, but the Curable program has helped me immensely. Take good care.

I got noravirus really, really bad to where I was bleeding from the gut. What it left me with was fibromyalgia and a bad case of it. Now this covid virus that gets in the gut and nerves, muscles can leave a person with fibro. Fibro is leftovers from a nasty virus.

The benefits of plant medecine and the ability of our own minds to rewire our neuropathways are documented. Dont tell me not to share the truth because of your own ignorance. My goodness. An actual human doctor. I live in the Netherlands. Pains started at the age of eleven. Was researched by a reumatologist at 12 and 21 and again at 31 when I finally got the diagnosis. The doctor said: I'm sorry, there is nothing we can do for you. I could go to a rehibilitation centre. I went there. Never met such cruel doctors and after the talk they said: we cannot help you because you have a mental illness (PTSD). Obviously they didn't care about the fact that so many fibromyalgia patients have trauma's. So, here I am, trying to manage my life with no energy, pain everywhere, unable to concentrate. Good luck to everyone struggling out there.

My Fibromyalgia is severe, chronic, completely debilitating, overwhelming and all consuming. I struggle to function, I lost my job & hobbies & I no longer socialise. Obviously this basic presentation doesn’t cover many/all symptoms. Fibromyalgia instantly aged me 30-40 years (that’s what it feels like to me!) Luckily more awareness is progressing, but this condition screams out for more research, understanding, therapies & treatments, especially a holistic approach. I never have ‘good days’ only ‘slightly less horrendous/extreme days’! I feel Fibromyalgia has robbed me of an active, sociable, productive, happy life. Fibromyalgia is a cruel and hidden condition. Some sufferers have very mild symptoms. Other such as myself have overwhelmingly severe and chronic symptoms. I am now disabled.

This hurts me. I love dancing. I used to be active until pain started taking over my life slowly. And entering a professional course worsened my situation. I once went to a doc with an article cut out the first time I found out abt fibromyalgia and he brushed it off saying its all in my head. Only I know how it feels like being trapped in an old woman's body at the age of 23 almost like being being bed ridden. And worst is the mental pain to not be able to do what I love to do. I was once a dancer..it just hurts😭

What do you consider a healthy diet? Grains are very harmful among other oxidizing foods..sugar, seed and nut oils.. Some people cannot tolerate high fiber or oxalates. Some need to avoid dairy. I didnt know I had a wheat problem until I stayed away and the rash on my limbs stopped. Look up dr paul mason on lectins; its pretty eye opening. Id highly suggest being in ketosis, whether vegan or carnivore.

I’m only 25 and have been trying to figure out what was wrong with me for 4 years now. I’ve been tossed around from doctor to doctor without a correct diagnosis. I was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia last week. It’s sad that I am now in severe pain everyday and had to apply for disability because I can’t function normally, let alone work. I worked so hard to get through nursing school and am a NICU at one of the top children’s hospitals in the country. The fact that I can’t work anymore due to the pain makes me feel like I worked so hard for nothing. After I got diagnosed, the rheumatologist said that there’s no cure for fibromyalgia and didn’t want to see me anymore because there was nothing she could do. I wish I could see this doctor but I live in South Jersey. I might fly to Kanas to see her if I can’t find anyone where I live. Living with this pain is unbearable and none of the numerous doctors I’ve seen seem to care.

It's not a one size fits all scenario - some drugs will work for you but not for others and vice versa. Only you can decide if you want to spend the rest of your life suffering in debilitating pain. I'd suggest you to try the medication and if it doesn't work - move on. Good luck whatever you decide

I shared this video on pinterest because I think more people like me with fibromialga need to see this.. I felt lost, in pain and confused at first when I finally found out I had it.. I get told all the time I don't look sick.. well because I'm really good at putting on a happy face but inside I'm dying.. I was told for many many years they didn't know what I had.. which in return made me more depressed and alone.. when I finally found out I had fibro after 8 years of the pain I still didn't know much.. I was given by my doctor a basic print out from the internet explaining what it is and the symptoms.. which I could have just done on my own.. I never received answers from my doctors but by only listening and watching videos of others who have it.. there are days I want to die from the pain not even counting when I have a flare up.. at this point I will take or do anything to help a little with the pain or to just have a small sliver of a life..growing up I had a really high pain tolerance and now as an adult just touching me hurts or gives me large bruises .. which makes it extremely hard to do anythingwith my kids or husband.. its crazy to say this and no one around me understands but even just having hair on my head hurts.. I am lost and don't even feel like I'm a quarter of the person I used to be.. my life is no longer mine.. my life is only pain, sadness, lonelyness ..but hopefully watching this video will help me better understand what fibromialga is and hopefully in the future I can better manage it.. I just want my life back 😪

Amazing talk! Thank you for this!! She's a breath of fresh air and hope!! An aside: I wish clinicians would start acknowledging parental loss when they talk about childhood trauma in these types of talks where they reference childhood trauma as an risk factor for fibro. Sudden loss (my experience) of a parent is traumatic. And, it's rarely (never) mentioned when people do talks even though traumatic loss is considered just that (trauma) in the research and literature. I hope this validates someone else in the comments here. Childhood trauma isn't solely abuse/neglect. It can encompass so many other forms of trauma

Almost lost both my parents when I was around 10/11 years old due to one attempting to murder the other, didn't help that I had to live in some kind of limbo where I knew nothing of the fate of either of my parents for months (my mom was recovering in ICU, my dad was in custody and later on sentenced to several years in prison before being deported). Didn't help that nobody seemed to give a sh!1 about it, had to go to school despite the trauma, no one cared (neither the people I lived with, neither the school, neither the effing social workers or the police that where there just after it happened). Yeah, that was fun.

I have had FM for 26 years. I used to be healthy as a bull, but today what annoys me is the drainage of energy. At times I often sleep 3 hours. My day can be a roller coaster. Perfect upon waking up then from my plateau it is a rapid descend for a while or the entire day. Trying to be productive can be a struggle, concentration is so foggy, find trying to read a real effort, when I sit down to play the piano forget about that desire. One thing I loathe when asked are you depressed? As far as I am concerned there is a gigantic difference between mental illness and this reality. No way will I allow myself be depressed. Yes, some days it can be hell, but I still remain as possible cheerful to get on with life’s special gifts. As a very young boy I suffered a serious car accident, hit in the head, Mum and I landed up in a coma and remained in hospital for months. The medical doctors informed my parents I would amount to nothing. Boy did I suffer serious head pain, migraines. For decades! Then one day I received one pill, ever since then I never have anymore migraines. I swear by God Almighty, not a single pain since then. Mother is proud to say her disturbed worthless son by doctors in the 1960s landed 8 scholarships to study 10 languages, 2 music piano/organ, theatrical scholarships around the world with 3 degrees plus other qualifications to expand my world education. So I am to be more determine to improve my life despite the handicap of suffering FM daily. No way will I permit myself to slip into depression. One day a psychotherapist heard me use the word anxious, immediately she labelled me being depressed. Instantly I barked back not allowing her to paint me in a wrong way. like other people I certainly suffer, but my frame of mind must remain positive to make life worthwhile and promising with great excitements. No matter how many peaks and valleys in one’s life believe me there are inspirations hidden to promote a healthiness in regards to this disability. Always look at the brighter side of life.

Dearest Dr. Nicol, How can I become your patient ? If I need to move to Kansas I might just do that! Thank you from California! I will be 70 this year and have had fibromyalgia for the past 30 years. I am so very sorry for each and every one of you who suffer with this ailment and who feel as though there is no way out. This was wonderful and so appreciated. Thank you Dr Nicol and thank you all for your heartfelt comments . ❤️

I have Fibromyalgia when I was diagnosed I had to google it. I’ve never heard of it. It’s a freak’n nightmare. 😢 I also had RSD/CRPS and Hemicranial continua and myelomalacia! FM is real and horrible. Sending my good vibes to you all! Love ❤️ this talk. I wish I had a doctor like her. Xo 😚 Ps. I also noticed that most or A LOT of people with FM were once athletes or major over achievers 🙋🏼‍♀️

Fibro, CFS etc are caused by toxins overload. It can be virus, parasites, mycotoxins (mold), heavy metals... at some point our body can't deal with it anymore, our detox pathways are blocked. Have a look at the websites of Dr Jess Peatross, and Dr Jaban Moore.

Could be coming out of left field here, but your last comment about dancers, athletes getting this got me thinking. There's a doctor on here who claims potassium deficiency due to long term electrolyte imbalances, excessive sweating by athletes long term leads to early death could this result in Cfs fibromyalgia. I'm no doctor but try the pink salt tartare sauce remedy who knows.

Gerson therapy was largely built on the premise that there is a deficiency of potassium in the cells and often too much sodium. This salt free protocol works to restore this balance with lots of juices and I believe a potato soup was involved. It seems you are onto something noticing this.

“Circle the Body!” I love that. I’ve done that a dozen or 2 times. Result 100%: Blank stare. “Be specific.” I’ve even taken markers to basic human diagrams and done my best to color-code my pain by type and location, keeping it to 4 colors for simplicity, providing a key for doctors to decipher very simple pictures. Response 100%: “What am I supposed to do with this?”

Hi Andrea, I am a guy who suffers from FM, I believe I got this after a Fatal RTA, I used to be a Trucker in UK, was diagnosed firstly with Spondylitis at 32 (1991), Doctor told me it was from driving with window down, then in 97 I was involved in Fatal RTA where two me coming from work dropped to sleep & hit me head on in my Truck, Both died, I left that job but went into another working mostly night shifts for a reefer company, I was doing great in my new job but kept jumping down out of cab, which started me off having low back pain, I then decided to climb in & out using step & was fine for a while then started jumping out & it brought on my low back pain again, I eventually had to finish working due to pain, I went to a hospital where I had a MRI, I was told it was Arthritis of spine & nothing could be done, I was 46 at the time (2004) then a few years later started getting burning pains in both shoulders, I went to my doctor who sent me to a specialist, he asked what was wrong & after telling him was diagnosed with FM, I have never worked since, I did start managing it, but now it is taking over my life, due to bad head aches & pain in both shoulders, I do get pains in all my joints right down to my feet, I am at a loss now, but do my best to keep going.

Oh my!! This is the most interesting, most informative, most helpful knowledge on fibromyalgia there is...every doctor should be made to watch, digest and understand this.... I've never found anyone who has this much knowledge and empathy to fibro sufferers...usually it's 'oh yes, you have pain where? Everywhere? Come on...' unless it's a fellow fibro warrior, nobody else has a clue and they aren't interested in something that's 'all in your head'!!! It can be lonely and, at times, all consuming especially when one has other miseries - autoimmune disorders, IBS, chronic fatigue etc... I'm grateful there is someone in the world who understands and can articulate this misery...thank you....SW Wales, UK.

Yours has gone into remission? Do you know how that came about? Any kind of diet or maybe something in the environment etc. I’ve had fibro for decades now. There was one day when I actually felt like it was gone, but that lasted maybe 12 hrs. Then it came right back. Nothing I do makes it any better & I can’t stand it anymore

Just watched the presentation you gave in Ireland and I’m a Fibromyalgia patient since May 1998. I was fine coming back from a 4 day weekend in Toronto from New Brunswick and getting up on Monday morning to get ready to leave for a Nova Scotia week meeting and sitting on the side of my bed, my body was burning everywhere, just could not believe what was happening to my body, I was ok but tired from the 4 day in Toronto arriving home on Sunday pm and Monday morning my body was like in Hell, so much wide spread burning pain. I could write a book here but to bring this to a conclusion, I have tried everything out there to help me go through the pain, the Fibro Flareups, believe me I have tried everything. One thing I have noticed Dr. Andrea Nicol did not mentioned is if the weather affects us and for me, it’s a big yes. The barometric or atmospheric pressure going down really affects me and I can feel storms coming all the time. When I travel to places where the pressure does not vary too much, I feel a lot less pain. So I was on the Gold Coast in Australia for one month and I felt great there; have been in Dade City, Florida, between Tampa Bay and Orlando 3 Springs lately and also feel great there. I am Canadian, do travelling in Florida for 3 months in the Spring can be costly and travel insurance is adding to the cost. We try to go as much as we can just to get away from our terrible Winters in New Brunswick, Canada 🇨🇦. I loved your presentation, will share with friends and hope you find the right medication for our suffering. God bless you. 💓

Same thing with this Canadian. One thing that really helped me was getting 4000 IU Vitamin D per day, as we are deficient in most cases in this climate. Blood test will tell you. Much less pain. I wud definitely try it as it has shown efficacy against COVID in valid medical research. Keep looking up

I complained to my physician all the pains in my body and always gets a shrug off response until I researched it myself and went back to my dr to tell her that I suffer from fibromyalgia, that’s when she agreed. I learn to live with chronic pain. Just accept it and if it’s worse then I take medication. Adding to my problem is my anxiety and depression. Sleep problem which almost got me killed with 2 auto accident. So now I take anxiety medication.
