Oliver was a great brand. There greatest struggle in the end was building a stronger dealer network. They had great dealers but not enough of them. Their factories also became dated and did not keep up with the times.

We switched to Oliver equipment in the late 60's because of a dispute with IH over a warranty issue. Beaver's Implement in Charleston Illinois was the local dealer, over the next several years we farmed with an 1850 gas, 2- 2255"s, 4-180, 1550, 2-1650's, 2- 2-135's and a 8900 combine. Bob was great dealer and we had many years of reliable service from that equipment. My brother and i spent many hours cultivating on those 1650's, our favorite way to fight boredom was to load the floorboards with dirt clods and when close enough to each other the war was on. The crops always seemed thinner in those areas, not sure why.

A 4-150 was our farm’s first articulated tractor and first tractor over 100 horsepower. Bought new when I was in junior high school, I put a lot of hours in the seat of that thing. The hydraulic system left a bit to be desired, always had to slow way down to give the hydraulics time to lift the tillage equipment. We pulled a Miller 12 foot offset disc and a White 22 foot folding disc off the drawbar and a 3 point hitch mounted 12 foot chisel plow, which was all that tractor wanted to mess with.

Growing up, all our ground was low, dark soil. Dad had a 5-16" MF plow he pulled with our MF 1135 tractor. It had shearbolt trip bottoms. We bought some more land and it was very stony / rocky. He went through so many bolts on that first field, he went to the MF/White dealer and bought a White 5-16" plow with auto-reset bottoms. We added a 6th bottom cuz the MF 1135 had tons more HP that the rated 120hp. It was dyno'd at 150!

My dad was a Farmall / IH man, but I worked quite a bit for a local cattle feedlot operation (he always hired the local HS kids, as they put up several thousand small square bales every year). They had several Oliver's and White's. At one time, 3 Oliver 77s, a 1650 narrow front was the loader tractor, a wide front 1655, 2-105, and the big tractor was a 2-135.
