+YensR A grader has only a blade and can't carry any dirt. The boxes on the back is what is doing the work. They are scrapers and yes they come self propelled, with 2 engines, often. This is a contractor and he simply has to be able to utilise his gear in multiple ways. Tractors can do other things, scraper can't. Lower ground pressure with this set up too since civil engineering does not involve itself with soil compaction. In fact, quite the opposite, a well compaction substrate is a requirement.

+Alex Veldhuis Hi Alex, graders can move dirt. If you watch the video you will see that the scrapers are not actually carrying the dirt. You are right, in normal scraper use, a scraper (whether self-propelled or pulled) picks up dirt in its bowl and then dumps it elsewhere. But this does not happen here. They are making a very flat field even flatter - which is exactly where a grader would be superior. You are right though, for the contractor it makes sense to utilise their universal tractors and not get an expensive grader - but for the owner of the field, the question is a bit different. As I said initially, lower ground pressure is important and probably beats any levelling advantages of a grader.

Henrik Pettersson At 2:16 you can see a laser turret in the middle of the field. It is used to map the entire field for search areas with "holes" (no sufficient terrain) and areas with too much terrain. This turret is place high enough (in respect to the ground) so that each other turrets mounted on the Terra Dozers are able to see this primary turret. The tractors move the terrain around the field to create a very flat ground. This is particularly important to get homogeneous irrigation all around the terrain. This techniques is more and more used in rice fields (and other cultivations too), where irrigation and humidity control are the main parameters to get the most in terms of productivity and quality.

My limited knowledge of farming and the fact that you don't see basically any tracked John Deeres here in East Central Georgia USA kept my thinking away from tractors with tracks. As you and Billy Goose say tracked tractors causing less compression is logical.

CyMonVids it's mainly useful for tulip and other flower crops, the bulbs are very sensitive to water and a level field ensures all bulbs are equally wet
