Can TA-838s be hooked straight to one another like the TA-312s and use internal batteries to ring one another? If so can it be done with the same two strand wire that you can use with the TA-312s?
NO. The TA-838 lacks the built in ring voltage generator (hand crank) like a TA-312 has. They will communicate with each other in 4 wire mode when sent to point to point. In this mode they generate an actual ring tone that signals the other phone. If you set them to both to 2W LB you can talk between them using two wires but won't be able to ring them. There is a company called A-1 Telephone and Electronics that will take a DNVT and gut it and replace the components so you can use it with a two wire POTS phone line. What kind of DNVT is it?
