This is the best affordable audio setup I have ever put together and one that rivals systems in the thousands.
Please notice that all the music videos in this series are essentially the same. The video itself is just a filler, what really matters is the audio in regards to the notion of figuring out if this simple and inexpensive setup was able to capture the nuances in the music.

This room is the first incarnation of a dedicated stereo room I have ever tried, I have always had my stereo in the living room where I spend the most time, that being said the room is in diapers (meaning I have a long way to go with it). The acoustic absorption panels are not in their final place yet but I measured the first reflection points on the side walls (you can see the green tape right behind me on the first video of the series) and placed the panels there but didn't like the results. Therefore I will try to treat with diffusion instead.

The other larger set of speakers you can see here is a custom made pair I acquired in the used marked and they have kind of a cool story behind them, they will also need some work to get the best out of them. That pair was build by an engineering student here in Michigan for a college project years ago. He is now one of Apple's lead designers, cool isn't it? All the drivers in those speakers are Vifa pre-purchase of Scan Speak and made in Denmark.
You can also see that I am using a speaker selector and in this case it's a vintage Japanese made very simple speaker selector. I love comparing speaker performance and this is how I can go instantly from one speaker to the other one. I feel that if you have to stand up to change cables it is never possible to make a good comparison. The drawback with this speaker selector is that speakers of higher sensitivity will sound louder giving a false impression of better performance. If one is aware of this fact then can make adjustments for a fair comparison. There are speaker selectors with volume controls but I rather keep things simple. The least amount of things in the music path the better.
I am using Tributaries Datasound speaker cables with the data part of the cables removed, nothing fancy but they do the trick very well.
I know that by listening to this video you will never be able to hear the same performance I hear on my end, it is impossible. This is like me trying to give a message to an audience and instead of me giving the message I whisper in someone else's ears and they give the message. That means that what the audience heard was someone else's voice and not mine. The same way when you play this video you will hear the voice of whatever gear you are using on your end. However I have realized that if I used fairly descent equipment on my end to record & save the file and you use fairly descent equipment on you end then you will at least have a good idea of the performance in between. I am not a headphone guy but for the purpose of this test I recommend using a good set of headphones.
