The effervescent Tim Pilbeam has good days but he has bad days - and those bad days are down to Lyme disease, which he caught from a tick bite 20 years ago. He has been keeping a video diary for the last two years. Here's what it's like - and what he's trying out to cure it.
Meanwhile, we were at the British Shooting Show at the weekend - and we lost control of the Fieldsports Channel News Stump. Find out what happens. Plus the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester, is out shooting pigeons, and we join them. There's Hunting RU-vid and the real News Stump, too, in this week's #FieldsportsBritain

Great Video Guys, you have highlighted the seriousness of post affects of having infected by Lyme . It's so very shocking to know that very less has been researched on such grevieous matter. All the best to Tim Pilbeam, hope he is able to find a solution to get rid of Lyme forever

I had been a serviceman for over 20 years and I was medically discharged for PDST symptoms, depression and anxiety. Serving in Germany for many years lying in ditches on many a occasion. I have all the symptoms you have described and many more. I was tested in the UK for Lyme's and as usual nothing found. You were concerned about the depression on the application for FAC well all I can say is a big thankyou to the common sense of my fire arms team in Fife Scotland. I have my shot gun and a .243 rifle with a .17hmr and just got my FAC air rifle added. I still live with all these symptoms and I have my ups and downs. What the police are looking for is to see that you are being treated with medication and you are under control of your symptoms. You are not a aggressive or violent person and you are no threat to people. Most FAC holders are not a threat to persons it's just difficult to find the ones who are. Shooting and my dogs have given me a massive boost to my mental health and with help from Help the Hero's I have improved greatly. I have had to give up many of my physical sports due to my symptoms. Just put it up to old age which is hard to accept after being so physical. Good luck with your hunt for a cure or even a answer. By the way I also was bitten on the bollocks.

I've had Lyme infection 3 times while doing field research. I am lucky to have rapid reaction to this infection. 1st time in 2013 it was heavy head pain - I thought I will cut it off, then came travelling joints' pain. Antibiotics helped, but Borelia stayed after one of following bites and shorter antybiotics treatments, as it appeared later. I was the first infection-aware person in my scientific institute, but soon more and more colleagues contacted me, asking for help. It appeared only later, that one of our noble professors was half paralyzed due to Lyme in early 2000'. The chief of the hospital department for transmittable diseases closed him in the hospital on a 4-week heavy antibiotic curation. He has got better and returned to normal functioning. Sadly the doctor retired and there is none that knows much about Lyme anymore. Lyme is difficult - diagnostics are not certain (especially ELISA and Western Blot), bacteria is adapting to the immune system, chronic infections are difficult to get out of them. It is often hiding in the brain-spine fluids, where blood does not drain in/out so you can't expect to find genes of this bacteria in the blood, so even PCR genetic tests won't work. You have to also cope with herx - after effects on Borelia's toxins and damages made to the nervous system, apeariing months after you eradicate it. Being on one of scientific conferences I once asked a forester in MAzury region in PL, how many people have Lyme in his unit - he said 75% of the crew has the symptoms. Personally I (think) am free from Boerlia now .. until proven otherwise. ;) For non-classical medicine measures I tested - if you need fast bettering I'd opt for Cistus Creticus - strongest out of Cistus species (you can actually get it from Crete from botano.gr). Joalis curation seem also to work quite good, but you'd expect a 2-4 days of worsening, as you body actually spots this treacherous spirochaete and starts fighting it. Take care Tim. I am admiring your strength against the bacteria in this chronic form and at the same time I am pitty for your typically male attitude to health ;) Borelia infection, when cough red handed as primary infection has good recovering odds. Please investigate further and say to your Channel's audience - the sooner you get Lyme treated after the bite the better are the odds. Sadly, ca 50% of cases have the red ring or such strong reaction as I have had (I had no ring in any of the infecitons I went through). Take care and good luck with getting the nasty bacteria out of you. Darz Bor!

BTW. To avoid inviting the next tick with Borelia I am using gaiters impregnated with permetrine - it'll kill every insect that comes with contact with it. To get rid of ticks in you yard... use tick tubes - also permetrine based.Tick tubes are visited by mice, that take the impregnated cotton to their nests, which will make ticks and their larval forms killed right at the source - in mice nests. Take care!

I got lyme aswell but i used cbd oil (oil from cannabis plants) and that really helped me. Got rid of the aches and feeling tired. I'd say give it a try if other medicine ain't working.

Great show this week and completely away from the norm. The transmission of lyme from human to human was new to me and clearly, as ticks become more and more prevalent, we need to be aware and educated. Thanks so much to Tim for being brave enough and public spirited enough to share his health condition and blogs with us all. Good luck with everything you try. You're infectious (pun intended) opTIMism is a reminder to all of us that if you're having a bad day today tomorrow could be better so let's get on with it. Who is up for next week? OK, optimism over. Who chose the music for RAU pigeon shooting? Is it me or was it intrusive? Back to Lyme - would using my jungle strength, 50% DEET insect repellent on my stalking gear keep the little blood sucking so and so's off me? I've got loads left from West Africa.

Wee follow-up : I've been told that spraying yourself and your clothing with help keep ticks off. From my experience, Jungle Formula, Boots' own Repel and the truly brilliant Ben's Safari Strength (BSS) are all 50% DEET & all work really well on biting insects. BSS is a bit tacky but I can guarantee it keeps everything, including romantic intent, off you!

Lyme disease is no joke. I was diagnosed years ago and I can very much relate to Mr Pilbeam's symptoms. Take precautions in areas with ticks and seek medical help if you feel you have been exposed.
