A year ago I could just about change a tyre. Thanks to watching James I’ve developed the confidence and skills to tackle servicing, suspension work and lately engine rebuilds. I don’t know the proper names of every component nor do I care. However, anyone who has the nerve to make and produce videos and post them publicly is to be respected and commended. Thank you James for doing your thing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've had no training and im more than capable with my Halfords socket set(lifetime guarantee btw). Obviously the ones who pick up on ur mistakes are no mechanics themselves as they would have no need to watch vids abt fixing cars. Keep up the gd work 👍

You certainly have much more confidence than I do. I have a similar engine to that in my MK6 Fiesta, nudging 118 thou but still seems to run sweetly. To me it looks like there was a bit of blowby on those pistons note the carbon black colour just below the rings but with most petrol engines at this mileage point that's to be expected plus with thrashing. I look forward to seeing more progress on this project!

Could've fooled me, I thought you'd had at least some mechanical training. For self taught, you're doing awesome. I got scared off when one of my cars caught fire and downed tools for years. Since the Astra rebuild, I've had tools back in my hands and feeling inspired and confident so well done! Question time: Why do the pistons come out the top of the engine? Can they not be pulled through the bottom where the crank goes?

James, it doesn't matter with these ford engines where the sprocket line up. That's why you use the timing kit on the cams and crank. Set the timing with the tool, fit the sprocket and finger tighten the bolts, fit the belt, then torque the bolts. Hope it helps
@spiked4735

Make sure you check and double check for debris when you get to re-assembly. Last thing you need is a blocked bearing journal because a bit of dirt got stuck! And ignore the numpties. What you do is bloody good for an amateur. You should be proud.

As your there id reccomend changing the bearing shells, that brown is most likely copper coming through a sign of quite some wear, I would personally for peace of mind, as you said 120000 mile engine with some thrashing and an unknown service history I'd personally change them

That bearing he said was brown, it looked like it wasn't actually the bearing and was the end of the conrod, the bearing didn't seem to be there (was probably still on the crank shaft)

Good job. Please make sure to replace the bolts for the crankshaft bearings and connecting rods. Those are stretch bolts. Also it's definetly a good idea to replace all the bearings (crankshaft and piston) while you are in there. The connecting rod caps have a specific orientation as well well as the connecting rods itself so make sure to install them correctly ;-) For the cylinder bores I would also hone it slightly with a flex hone (180 grid) and lots of oil. Keep up the good work :-)

I didn't do that at my first rebuild - just honed + new piston rings and needed to fully dissasemble it because of that. Rings just weren't able to seat in (oil full of steel "dust" from cylinder wall and rings). Wish you luck!
