Wow Keithy, you're really showing us your feelings here, I greatly appreciate such openness. Am a mining engineering student myself and wondering about the loneliness of the job waiting for me. You shouldn't be ashamed to quit the job if it's wearing you down. All the best

I understand it's improving now with technology and better facilities. 10 years ago when I experienced it I found it kind of depressing. For you being a mining engineer, you only need a put in a few years then you will have a desk job at head office :D

Hey Keithy, would you consider staying at a mine site about like a “Comfortable Jail” type of situation? That’s the sort of feel I get from people when they are talking about the stay there. Similar to like when a person goes to jail, both sides of the relationship is cut off from physical contact with the other and I think that’s what contributes to these mental stresses people have out there

G’day mate, I think calling it a comfortable jail would definitely be a bit extreme. Remote - definitely. Isolated - sure. Uncomfortable - not even close. While every mining camp differs from each other, none that I’ve been to in the 20-odd years I’ve been in the mining industry have been prison camps! Definitely not a 5 star hotel, but you can’t expect it given the rent is free. It’s definitely hard on relationships, especially if there are heavy trust concerns, or if one is fearful of isolation/having to be alone for periods of time. I’ve been asked by literally THOUSANDS of lads and lasses on “Chilling with Keithy” over on Facebook very similar questions to what you’ve asked here. It’s not for the faint hearted.

Definitely not a prison, but it certainly has more limitations than living in the real world..
