Hey guys and girls!
This time is a different video about living as, and with a FIFO (Fly in Fly out) worker. The message is strong, but I’d like to remind all of you in FIFO relationships about the importance of communication. It has the power to destroy lives, and also to make life so much better.
If you have any questions or want to chat with me, feel free to head over to @chillingwithkeithy on facebook and you can get all the latest and have a chat with me personally if you'd like.
Feel free to comment and subscribe if you’d like to see more from me.
#fifo #miningaustralia #relationships
Cheers

Perfect advice Keith. So valid and I take my hat off to all FIFO workers. It's definately not my cuppa T. Your all wonderful and the jobs you do so important. The time away from home and loved ones is not an easy task. Thankyou. Great video. 👍

Another great post Keithy. My hubby has come home and told me how he has spoken to guys at site. He is a ex nurse. Many time guys have wife or kids having procedures and they are worried. They will seek him out. Usually he knows what they are talking about and can give them some peace. He was at Argyle many years ago when it went to a dry site. Found mental health issues went through the roof. As you said they went back to their box. Where as before they may have a beer at wettie and a chat about whatever. I have had many times where he txt late apologising he was talking with someone having an issue. We don't have kids at home anymore so not an issue for us.

One thing I noticed over my 15 years in mining is that guys complain and moan about marriages breaking down and getting divorced. But those same guys will rather be up at the wet mess than calling home. Guys that have families and kids calling home once or twice a week and I can't believe it. Am on the phone as many times as I can to my kids. When I wake up, when am on break and at least 3 times at night, once when I get back to camp, once after dinner and once at bed time to say good night to kids and our relationship is stronger than ever, never have an argument while am away if we have issues we wait until I get home and sit down sort it out face to face and move on. The wife understands how hard it is on me being away and how hard I work and appreciates it. I also know how hard she works at being a stay at home mum looking after everything while am away, looking after kids and being the mum and dad for those 2 weeks and I appreciate it. Need to work as a team and some couples just dont make a great team and cant agree more that communication is the key.

I do understand a lot how hard people working fifo. We both very much understand each other. But sometimes I pissed off with my partner going for drinks with the boys after work. When the time talk to me, He is a bit pissed and couldn't talk with me and too tired then getting angry when he doesn't want to hear about something or whatever.. Communications is very important when your partner away. The missus are working too or looking after the kids while he is away. So, both have important roles for the family. Message for some guys who working away, please don't get drunk when back to your room and time to talk to your missus 🤣🤣

So only my husband is working at the moment. We are happily married and love each other very much. Well said mate and I mostly agree with you. I would just like to say though, to the people watching, that the PARTICULAR site you work at has a big impact on your mental health, and the people you work with..... Keith here says hes worked at the same site for 14 years and if you've been to one camp you've seen them all..... In some cases he could be right but in some cases not. If you're at a PARTICULARLY remote site, with no phone reception, shitty-arse internet, shitty weather, shitty food, shitty facilities, poor quality (or OVER the top) health & safety, shitty bosses and shitty people doing a shitty unfriendly roster, this can impact you in a negative way a hundred times worse. I've been to sites like that, where the only way to reach the outside world is a payphone with a queue. THAT, you do not want guys.... On the other hand, if you work at a good site, which do exist out there, it can be tremendously beneficial for your mental health. It's ALWAYS hard though and can be very stressful, and there's no such thing as easy money in the mines. Thanks for the video Keith. Stay safe.

Hey Keithy I am Collette’s Hubby Spot on advice brother I’ve worked in Heavy Industry all my life ‘ Time Served Mechanical Fitter ‘ Just done my Ozzy Mech Level 3 RPL Did my Apprenteship in the Steel Industry - British Steel General Steels Scunthorpe - U.K. biggest steel manufacturing site. Left and went Contracting U.K. and Europe - Petrochemical - Power Generation - Thermal & Gas - Construction and Turnarounds. So yeh I was born in Brissy and spent my life growing up Etc in the U.K. We decided to go for a life change shit or bust. Doing ok my first gig was with WOOD Grouo at AMPOL Lytton Refinery on the HFA Unit Since then I’ve been bouncing around locally Casual. Money ain’t great so have thought long and hard about going FIFO with WOOD UGL and MONO’s I lived out of a bag most of my working life bouncing around site to site shutdown after shutdown so sure myself and Collette can keep strong and work it out. Respect your honesty and passion for the whole wellbeing and mental health bubble Keith Straight Shooter Mate Love It Thank you Jay

@@Keithy_W Thank you So far not so good been a bit of a rough ride to be honest. Mainly with Collette fracturing her knee cap 4 weeks in which took its toll on us on all levels. The good thing my wife is now on the mend so now it’s just a matter of her getting the range back in her knee. Finding really hard getting a rental home due to lack of history in Oz and also only finding casual work mainly due to this Global situation we have been put in. So I have had to stay local for work so I can be there for Collette while she gets back in her feet. It will all come good we are fighters, keep it real and very focused. We both gave up our businesses in the U.K. along with friends family and our loving dog ‘we re-homed him, thankfully he found the right move’ He was actually hardest thing to let go of. We was going to bring him out here with us. Was all in place our decision was unselfish with his best interests at large. So we did the right thing looking back for sure. At moment we are in Bayside, Brisbane. Quite willing to relocate if the right opportunity comes along. Working hard, head down arse up and now actually starting to save again. We will get there mate for sure. FIFO is an option but something myself and wife will site and discuss and agree on when the time is right. Take care Keithy and Keep It Real 🇦🇺☀️

That’s really good to hear mate. You have both had your battle getting here and finding your feet, it sounds like you’re definitely on the right path to getting well ahead. I hope that Collette’s knee recovery is going well, and remains smooth as well. It would be difficult to manage all of the things on at the moment. Good call re-homing your best mate too. It’s a hard thing to do sending the family pet to a new home. All the best, and a big cheers to you both 👍🏻 Keithy

As informing as this is. It is purely based around the fifo worker. What about the woman who is at home raising their children and has her own mental health issues due to having little support. Or the fact that there partner is so tired from working so hard they no longer have the emotional or physical energy to be present even when they are back. I take my hat off to anyone who works hard to provide for there family no matter what occupation that may be. Just remember though your both in it together so communication and understanding on both parties is crucial.

My hubby worked drive in drive out 9 hour one way trip, being home with 3 kids wasn't easy but I had friends I could talk to, I had the beach 20 mins away to take the kids to to relax, sports, my most stressful days were the ones where he drove away and drove home.. I'm not the type of person who needs constant companionship I can be alone and that was a huge help with me not being overwhelmed. He knew I would be there for him a phone call away at anytime, day or night.

You sound like you’re arguing for the sake of arguing. No point, no solution and only sitting on the fence arguing both sides so nothing is right. The point is the FIFO worker makes a superior salary, works hard for it with huge hours. Both sides have to sacrifice in order for the family to set themselves up financially through investment and property… then you can afford to exit, live on the foundations you’ve built and have more time available. Don’t be entitled everyone has to work hard.
