It's somewhat of a statistical probability that when a contestant is tossing up between two options the 50/50 will keep both about 1/3 of the time (assuming they know enough to have picked the right one) On the 2 occasions the 50/50 eliminates one of the two the contestant is tossing up between its not noteworthy, they get it right and we forget about it. But kn the 1/3 it leaves both, we notice and remember it, making it seem like "that always happens".

@@Iarlen not gonna lie. Which of these two scenarios is more likely. The wrong 50/50 option is randomly generated by a computer generation. Norm made a joke in gest, because he is a comedian. There was a 33% chance it would play out the way he joked about. It did and that's why this clip is noteworthy, and you forget about the other 66% of times this dosen't occur. There is someone who specifically picks in every question on the show, which of the two 50/50 questions are more likely to be picked. Or is listening in just to chose the two options the contestant is tossing up between. Norm was somehow wise to this, he's too crafty for those darn game show producers and Norm exposes them. It plays out that way literally every single 50/50 use on millionaire, and no one has ever been tossing up between two choices and the 50/50 helped them by eliminating one of the choices they were tossing up between.
@@petarhristov4417 There are indeed six total combinations (4 choose 2), but only three of them have the correct answer. So the three combinations are the correct answer accompanied by either of the three remaining answers.
@@casperdewith but the point is that he was undecided between 2 of the 4 options, and it's not certain that 1 of those is correct, both of them could have disappeared. You're calculating as if one of those 2 is definitely the right answer, then you trivially calculate the odds as 1/3. The correct odds (I think) are those that one of his initial two choices is correct (1/2), multiplied by the odds that after removing another two at random, the one that's left is the not-correct answer from the same initial two (1/3). So I think 1/6 is correct
@@helvete_ingres4717 From the player’s perspective, the probability is indeed 1 in 6. That’s a totally understandable perspective. We know that three of those options have zero chance of occurring, so from the quizmaster’s perspective, it would have been 1 in 3, if you knew what the correct answer is. I thought this more informed perspective made the most sense, also because the computer can only pick between three options. But thanks for pointing it out.
@@casperdewith yeah you're calculating the odds for someone who already knows the answer (and for some reason also chooses the 50/50 option). It's true the computer only has three possibly outputs, but the probability that the computer's output is the same two options a given player was undecided between is 1/6. This kind of reads like the Monty Hall problem in reverse (or a reverse-engineering of that problem)
Funny but that's not how it works. The 50/50 goes the right answer and the most similar. Spain and Portugal are right next to each other and people mistake them all the time
@@nmer5023 it used to on the older series but now in the newer series it takes away two random wrong answers. Its definitely a more useful lifeline now.
Best part is he got this question RIGHT. He was _almost_ sure it was Madrid and knew it wasn't Lisbon, so he baited the showrunners into giving him those two choices and then locked in "Madrid", the correct answer.
Everyone knew about this back in the day. That's why people wised up and stopped telling Regis which two the were debating before using 50/50. If you answered him those two would always be left up. It was 100% rigged.
This happens so often that I say you should NEVER say what you think. If the host asks, don't tell them, cos any time someone does it gives them those two options.
@@eminenception Well, anytime someone says "I think it's [answer1] or [answer2]", then use 50/50, it often keeps those answers. Given the frequency of this occuring, it's likely someone is actually purposefully leaving those two options, as if 50/50 is useless it ramps up tension and makes better TV drama. So if anyone ends up on Millionaire, they *shouldn't* say what they think before using 50/50, as it then prevent tampering from the production crew.
@@BrickleYourFrickle They don't remove the right one, they just leave in the two you guessed. For example, the capital of England: London, E, New York or Moscow. Now, obviously, you'll say "It's either London or E" (cos semantics, wordplay). If you 50/50 that, they'll remove New York and Moscow, leaving London and E, leaving you in the same position but now, *le gasp!* , you're down a lifeline and you're still no closer to success! Drama! Viewer intrigue! Could they lose it all!? Keep watching to find out! Basically, don't tell them what you think it could be before you 50/50 otherwise you'll be stuck with those two answers. Keep it to yourself, 50/50, and you're more likely to be left with answers you're certain of rather than two you can't decide between.

@@black_squall Yep. Confirmation/negativity bias would make us feel like these situations happen more frequently than they actually do. Plus, there was a whole discussion about how the probability of this happening is somewhere between 1/5 and 1/3 in situations like this, so it would legitimately happen (randomly) really frequently anyway.
Possibly he thought Rome not Lisbon, but it wasn't rigged if he fake said Lisbon. It was rigged in the sense the question writers ahead of time determined the two most likely answers. They'd poll some strictly secret friends and such, or, go with their gut on the likely second guess; it's not hard to think Portugal or Spain. The question stacks are firmly locked in like Regis says, by this point the show was already in dozens and dozens of countries, it'd be a global nightmare for Celador if they rigged it on the set.
For those who actually want to know the answer: Madrid Reina is the Spanish word for Queen. In Portuguese, it's rainha So knowing the language of origin right off the bat would give you the answer. On top of that, only one of those options is in a country that's currently a monarchy. Queen Sofía was the queen consort of Spain from 1975 to 2014. Would've been dirtier if they included the *CITY* of Sofia as an option

They're both actors, one a comedian obviously setting up a bit; they did used to have backstage technicians working stuff including everything with the "Computer--" they definitely could've MADE (in real time) it staged by Regis knowing the answers (obviously), the techs purposely took out the options to make his bit funnier, etc. "Since this is for Charity and played by the wealthy and hosted by the wealthy.. he's a comedian and it makes the best viewing experience for them to lean into TLDR sure maybe, but not 100% on all sides knew
They did everything to stop him from winning this game. Go watch the million dollar question how Regis tries to act like he should walk away because it was for charity even after he said Final Answer with the correct answer. He walked away and that children cancer research walked away with on $500,000 instead of a $1,000,000
Yeah but norm wasn’t 100% percent sure, he was 50/ 50 between greenbrier and pinehurst, and Regis knew it. Regis also knew norm was a degenerate gambler, and he didn’t want norm to gamble away 500,000 for charity. If norm was more certain than he appeared to be, he probably wouldn’t have tried to talk sense into Norm .
Norm has talked about this. Regis doesn't know the answers and Norm told Regis that he guessed on the previous question. Regis was trying to make sure that Norm was confident in his guess. Furthermore, the show has an insurance policy that, if someone wins a million, they don't have to pay it. So, him winning 500k is worse from their perspective, because they have to pay it out. No conspiracy. Just unfortunate happenstance.

This is because the 50:50 is predetermined to leave the two most reasonable answers, and when people are conflicted, it's usually between the two most reasonable answers.

To be honest, if it is pre-determined, it's a 33% chance. It will show the right answer and then either the one you don't want to see (1/3 chance) or the two you want to see (2/3 chance). It's a little unlucky but was still a good time to use a 50-50.

For anyone who doesn't get the joke: Basically the fifty-fifty option takes off two of the wrong answers, and he said he was unsure if the answer was Madrid or Lisbon. After he said that, they took off the other two answers, and left him with the ones he was stuck between. Making the fifty-fifty option a waste. (and yes I know that he tricked the producer into removing Rome and Vienna, but this is what the joke is supposed to be in this context.)
