Personal theory: Mav died in the darkstar crash, rest of the movie is the hallucination he's having for the 10 miliseconds before he's turned into human tomato paste.

Wonder if the body would disintegrate once it was ejected at that speed. I'm pretty sure it would have broken apart immediately. This is what I think at least. Quick way to get med boarded is to eject out of an aircraft anyway the stress alone compresses your spine and you lose an inch of height. Twice and its an automatic grounding for the rest of your career.

It’s cheap. If its was a new character you wouldn’t feel this way because of how flat Miles Teller acting and character writing was. Thankfully they have a beloved character to rip of down to his 80’s mustache. The spitting image of his dad town to his taste in music! Wow!!

The reason for the Hornet stick is because it was an F18 that was used in this scene, the sonic boom that lifts the roof of the guard shack was real, in fact it was not planned, but accidental, DarkStar was CGI in the sequence, and the Mock up DarkStar aircraft build along side Skunk Works was used for close ups, taxing, ETC.. The most important thing that I enjoyed about this movie is getting together with many military veterans, active personnel, and their families. It was a joy hearing all of us making comments of our own experience with F18s, F14s, being on the carriers, seeing my squadron insignia VFA-151 and the tiger stripes on the F18s as they were taking off bringing back so many good memories, along with many familiar scenes of San Diego that I miss so much. Overall it was a great movie and I can't wait for the Blue Ray and I am buying a sick surround sound system too.

Actually the entire placement of the Darkstar sequence works fine for me, even as someone who knows Top Gun well. For anyone without prior knowledge of the franchise it introduces Maverick quickly and clearly, and for anyone else coming from the first movie the sudden slowdown pretty much reflects the place of the character at this time.

I didn’t have a problem with the Darkstar sequence (well, except for the whole surviving a Mach 10 wipeout). I think it helps set up the situation that he has finally mothballed his career. The biggest plot issue I have is one you have mentioned several times. Rooster. The movie never really shows us why he is “same old Rooster”. I think an intro after the opening sequence showing us Rooster’s problems is needed.

Providing any supporting character development or exposition, would have meant less screen time for Tom Cruise, so.... I assume the whole Darkstar plotline was a big, fat homage to the early Muroc/Edwards-Yeager days in general, and "The Right Stuff" in particular. That would explain the lax security (apparently, the early post-war test flights were conducted in a rather relaxed atmosphere, that is until General Albert Boyd moved the flight test center from Wright-Patterson out to the Mojave Desert), and the scene with Maverick appearing at the bar somewhat mirrors Yeager's crash in the NF-104A (amped up to 11). My head-canon explanation for him surviving the Darkstar completely disintegrating at hypersonic speeds is that I assume the Darkstar had a similar escape system as the F-111 (capsule).

@@Silversmok3 That was an unprotected ejection seat at Mach 3, NASA had a Mach 5 design that incorporated a windshield, literally a shield to protect the crew person. A Mach 10 design would likely incorporate a capsule with a passive (no power of fuel needed) braking system to control the capsule's attitude and slow it down enough for chutes to open. I feel like the opening scene on the carrier could have led to a scene where the Hornets are supporting troops in contact in some unmentioned desert country. That looks like he does about 30 degrees of turn a second (1/12th of a circle) at mach 9 (ballpark 2700m/s). The circle circumference is thus about 32,400m, which gives a radius of just over 5000m (2×pi×r=c). The acceleration on the airframe (a=v^2/r) is thus ballpark 1400m/s^2 or close to 144g... I'm an old fart, and was once stationed at Kadena AB when the SR's were still there. That after takeoff scene where you see the two burners climbing up into outer space. That's exactly what the SR-71 looked like after takeoff. I'll also note that F-117 flew almost exclusively at night for a long time until it was about to come out of the closet. This Dark Star was not the first. The LM RQ-3 Darkstar UAV was the first. At time my brother worked for an LM competitor on UAVs. After the first prototype crashed on its second flight he started calling it 'Dark Hole'. One last thing. I'm begging you guys to ruin 'Red Flag, the Ultimate Game'. The only believeable reason I see for Maverick's deliberately flying the Darkstar beyond mach 10, destroying it is that he knew after this unauthorised flight they would likely kick him out, or ground him permanently. And since he was in his self worth so dependent on his "naval aviator" identity (as he himself admits), it was his attempt to "go out in style" with that plane instead of being kicked out and grounded from fast jet flying. And spending the rest of his days sitting alone in his hangar, pining after what he no longer has. He had to know for some time that his friend Ice was quite ill and would retire sooner rather than later, and without his protection, his flying days were over. Bit of a suicidal streak there with the Darkstar.

I like Sandboxx's theory that the whole Darkstar thing is a wink from Lockheed Martin about a real plane in development. There used to be a page on their website about a manned hypersonic vehicle, which mysteriously disappeared once the military seemed to grow serious about hypersonic flight.

I like the skunk on the tail. Obvious homage to Kelly Johnson and the Skunk Works. There was also an SR-71 with that tail marking.

Was filmed in my new home town. Nas Fallon. All actors were back seaters. The p51 is toms. The roof pop was real as I understand done by f18. The pilot got dressed down for it. We recently had a s.s. pass at low altitude. The bace admiral was not happy 😁. I know the bace cmc and the OP for ltcm.

My initial problem with the Darkstar was "Why would the Navy ever be involved with a program for a plane that clearly could never be launched off the deck of a ship or serve maritime interests?" Darkstar would clearly be in the wheelhouse of the Airforce and not serve any foreseeable need that I can imagine for the Navy. Yet it looks like a Navy program from what the film shows.

As an Australian fighter pilot, I have been obsessed with the navy and aviation for a very long time. When I turned 20, I decided to go to the US Navy and after 7 years of gruelling training, I made it into the navy as an F-18 pilot. Since I’m an Aussie, I made my callsign Bloke. I’ve been having such an adventure with the navy and been enjoying it for a long time. I watched Top Gun: Maverick and loved the movie. This is a great video.

How I would debrief Maverick upon his return. 1. Were you aware that the aircraft was designed to have a max speed of Mach 10? 2. Where you aware that at some undetermined speed beyond Mach 10 the aircraft would disintegrate? 3. Was your plan to fly at 0.1 Mach shy of this unknown speed and then return to base? 4. Why were you unable to accomplish this feat-is it because you DON’T KNOW EVERYTHING?! 5. Would you like to pay for the jet in monthly installments?

I just noticed something wrong and I usually try to ignore these kinds of things. The photograph Maverick sees on the wall of him with Iceman on the carrier deck has a caption that incorrectly identifies the aircraft carrier as the USS Ranger. It is clearly the Enterprise. I know they did some filming on the Ranger along with Enterprise but with the number 65, the distinctive construction of the tower at that time, and the establishing scene in the beginning and with the same skipper, I don't know how they labeled Ranger as the carrier they were on.

I might going to be a pain in the backyard with this, but I would sacrifice a moment to the "old-school" paper-based calendar @0530, "instead of just looking at his phone". "DINNER WITH JOE" confuses me. I might not understand English pretty well, since that is not my native language, however I tried to do my best to find a female amongst the possible characters called Joe, and yet failed. These videos about TG2 just became my personal favorites lately and pretty much find overwhelming fun watching "Mover ruins movies". Cheers, mate!

since the movie came out there's a popular theory that Mav died in that test crash and the rest of the movie is his purgatory or afterlife making amends and getting closure... either way I do like the homage to the Right Stuff test pilots in that scene.

How is it that after Mav ejects at Mach 10, he’s picked up by a helo, and, still in his flight suit, is escorted by armed guards into the admiral’s office, then is sent on his way “within the hour”, but Phoenix and Bob, after ejecting at 3-400kts, spend the night in the hospital?

I saw on "Entertainment Tonight" where Tom Cruise himself was stating that "I was allowed to place tiny HD cameras in specific cockpit places in those fighterplanes while the pilot flew the fighter around to simulate how it was done in the movie". Then the Melroseplace anchor asked "So you just placed your image in the cockpit for the movie" to which Tom Cruise just stated "Yes".
