Now, I'm not saying Dipper SHOULD have wanted to fight. But he fought a multiheaded Bear and WON. Why is he afraid of Robbie?

Yeah, this is the episode that really sets Robbie over the line. Dipper's at least got the excuse of having his first crush and the fact that he's still a kid and doesn't understand everything. Robbie is actively dating Wendy and he's fucking insecure to the point of challenging Dipper to a fight. Absolute loser energy

The game Soos was playing was Nort which Tron backwards. The side even says “the game based off a movie that’s based on a game”.

It's just dawning on me seeing all of these episodes in a row how Dipper's crush on Wendy is the show's main plot for like a full quarter of this season.

It took me longer than I care to admit one of the lines Dipper says is actually an assortment of video game references. “Well, we don’t have any traditional power-ups. Turkey legs, pizza boxes or cold rings. How about… half a taco?”

I’m so glad the “hate each other in secret” line got you to do a double take.

Kinda surprised that she didn’t react to the fact that Wendy is the daughter of the crazy lumberjack

The big reveals this episode that few catch: The reason Wendy had a ladder to the roof covered and Soos saying Stan wouldn't like that in an earlier episode, and the confirmation via the background that the lumberjack is Wendy's dad.

I've always felt like the man-ataur episode should've been after this one. Because if Dipper was able to solo a multi headed bear, then he should absolutely have no fear fighting pretty much anybody, especially a 15 year old string bean like Robbie.

18:40 These Final Fight references are how you know someone who worked on the show actually knows some stuff about fighting games beyond the surface level. Enough to reference a beat-'em-up game that just happens to frequently cross over with fighting games.

The pixel animation in this episode was done by Paul Robertson! An amazing pixel animator that did work for Scott Pilgrim vs the World and Adult Swim.

Gravity falls was ahead of its time, predicting how modern games turn out.

Paul Robertson did the pixel art for the show. He doesn't do the lazy option of making a PNG and shifting it around. Each frame is a new drawing just like in retro video games.

Dipper, a week ago you were training with man-oxen and fought a multiheaded bear and *won* . There is no threat to you from a lanky teen in skinny jeans.

I love how accurate the portrayal of a 15 yo angsty teen is in gravity falls. Because you can clearly see that Robbie has not figured stuff out and will be a good person after learning from his mistakes and growing up. It's wholesome in a way.

He _knows_ that he has absolutely _nothing_ to offer, and even a 12 year old kid would be a better choice than him. Hence the extremely performative side-hug that had nothing to do with affection and was entirely about claiming ownership and marking his territory. 6:42 - *“This is weird, man! Do you get beat at home, or something?”* We don't get to see Robbie's terrible, horrifying home life that formed him into what he is today, until season 2… 😉 18:53 - *“It is very dangerous litter! Who the fuck is leaving this around?”* These must be streets _of Rage!_ 😉 It's interesting that Robbie felt completely safe mocking Rumble, secure in the assumption that no adult would beat up a teenage kid like him, because that would be _wrong_ - and yet failed to grasp that him beating up a 12 year old child would be the exact same thing. 21:22 - *“Why by the water?”* Because the bonus stage of _Street Fighter Ⅱ,_ where you demolish a car for extra points, took place on a pier in front of a harbour scene, for some reason. 24:47 - *“[…] Unless you're rich like the dad who could buy his kid another car. […] The economy decides what you can do. okay? 'Cause if you're affluent enough, you can fight a bitch and then just go get healed at a hospital. Like a video game!”* Yup, sufficient money can buy you a lot of freedom from consequences; not just in the courts. You're expressing something, here, that Dipper will also bring to a point in season 2, episode 3.

Robbie and Dipper have such petty vibes, but it's the exact same vibe, and somehow that makes it feel less petty 😂

21:35 to be fair, Rich loves being Rich too. Imagine being good-looking, having an awesome fiancé who feigns being a gremlin but is woke af, and having a pack of loyal rats ready to tussle anyone against our Rat King. Shoutout to Rich, i miss the Daily Doses with him.

Y'know.. it's a good thing he only got a Street Fighter Ryu look alike to fight Robbie... It'd be a whole different episode if he got a Kazuya Mishima look alike.

The episode is not just about choosing to fight or not , it’s about facing your fear and owning up to fix your own mistakes which is pretty good and also sometimes you gotta throw hands at least to run away

robbie has one ofthe most underated character archs in this entire show! no one ever payes atention to him because all they see is the mean bully stereotype character. he gets way better in season 2 and hes honestly been one of my fave characters of the show. I HOPE YOU CAN FORGIVE HIM!

You know what they say. Imitation after dissing you and then falling miserably anyway is the most sincere form of flattery.

Gravity Falls really is one of those timeless shows, the comedy, lessons, and references are excellent for any age. And it perfectly captures the time it was set in without making it feel dated either. There are reasons wht this is such a beloved show for so many people and Im hlad you're getting to enjoy it now!

See I was never worried about Dipper this episode, because it was very obvious that Robbie wasn't going to do anything. At most he would've shaken Dipper up a bit or chased him. Still a dick move, but he definitely wasn't going to beat up a child.

Alicia's commentary is both incredibly wise and full of profound insights, something I didn't really expect when I started watching her

I love this episode so much because at the time, it was the only good video game parody in a show I'd ever seen. Before this it was all cringe stuff from people who clearly weren't gamers. Like I remember the 101 Dalmatians cartoon had a video game episode, and at one point Rodger's like "They made it to level 3! But that's the hardest level! Not even I, the designer of the game, have beaten that!" Even 8 year old me knew that was BS So seeing this episode, which clearly is made by people who know and love video games, was such a breath of fresh air and is still, to this day, one of my favorite episodes

This is one of my fave eps because of the sheer sprite work in this episode. My other fave ep comes later.

It’s been quite interesting to see a reaction series of this show where they tried so hard to see the best in Robbie for so long.

I don't know if Alicia has already read "Oyasumi Punpun", But there is a specific moment that I really like. In short, Punpun and another character end up getting into this "fighting for the girl" thing (not exactly a fight). And you can't judge the protagonist, he's a child who's still discovering what it means to love. And in the end, Punpun kind of "wins". Meanwhile, the other guy not only loses his chance to be with someone he really liked and wanted to make happy, he also loses his own dream. And all Punpun can do is watch the boy's world fall apart and feel a bitter taste. They both liked the same girl, but they were nice to each other. So much so that it seems like the beginning of a friendship is developing. I liked seeing this in a manga, when usually it's always "if I win, she's mine" and then the good guy wins. And it makes this conflict much more about themselves than about the girl. Especially with the other character, I felt his frustration. The frustration of "losing" a girl he really loved and wanted to do well for her, and also the frustration of losing the only thing that made him who he was. Unfortunately I only had the money to buy two volumes of the manga, but I will soon buy it and read the rest. I don't like reading digital media. And I hope you can understand what I meant. I'm not fluent in English, so... Meh.

This is the episode that made me want to keep watching the show. I don't know anything about cryptids or horror movies but I know video games so this one struck so many chords with me.

Ironically, while I was kinda on Dipper's side last episode because Robbie was kinda being rude, I'm actually of the same opinion as Episode 9 Alicia on Robbie here. This dude is absolutely, without a doubt, a loser. An insecure, needlessly antagonistic, jerk. But also, he's a teenager and most teens are like that. Now is the time for them to be assholes and learn to be better, and the conclusion of this episode clearly set him on that road with him learning to compromise on his petty relationship with a 12 year old. Also, also, from his reaction at the end, I'm willing to give him benefit of the doubt to say he expected Dipper to wimp out and wasn't actually prepared to beat up a kid.

Hey if you LOVED the idea that this episode gave that being about a video game character causing chaos….just wait till season two I won’t spoil it but I’ll just say that if you loved this episode you’ll most likely going to love the next one with this idea
