This video has been instrumental in teaching me the basics of the game! I grew up playing Sierra's Aces over Europe (1993) and this is my first stab at a flight sim since then!
For over two years, I was flying a Hurricane within Air Combat Group's multiplayer Battle of France/Britain campaign, which focuses largely on the historical aspect of the fight, and large squadron vs squadron engagements. Even though I was fighting primarily against Bf-109 E3 and E4s I never found myself to be outclassed. In a large battle enviroment Hurricane performs great - it has manouverability to get you out of a shit spot, while providing enough power to enable bounces and surprise attacks. Very rarily it would happen that a 109 pilot would engage in a turnfight with me, but often I found myself in a position of advantage, and once you have that it really takes a special kind of fuck up to miss your kill there.
Thanks for giving the channel a shot! It sounds like you have far more experience with the Hurri than me. I've tried to put together tips for beginners - I expect there's a lot I could learn from flying with you and the Jasta! A lot of the concepts I've tried to cover could really apply to any aircraft. I'm always amazed at what people can do with certain birds in MP. As I say at the end, what really matters is the person in the cockpit. Salute!
Thank you! Let me know how you get on. I've been having a blast with BoX flying the P47. I've worked out how to use her like both a BnZer and a turner. Pretty historically inaccurate but a lot of fun
That's one of the nicest comments I've ever received - thank you Finlay! It's tough to find the time these days with work and family commitment but I've started putting in more hours to RoF again. If you have any topics you'd like to me cover in either sim do let me know. Salute and happy hunting!
@@fireflyz8943 Those are kind words. I see some RU-vidrs who put up videos 2-3 times a week, and often it's footage of online victories (although rarely losses which can often be far more instructional). They often get a lot of views (people like to watch things go boom :p) but that's not my style. I make videos to try and help people get started with these sims, and to provide the kind of guidance I wish I'd had when I started flying online. I'll make sure to post something new in the coming months. The full release of Flying Circus will give plenty of material.
Gonçalo Almeida thank you! I’m trying to pass on some of the things I’ve learned, mostly the hard way! I’d love to see more players on servers so I’m trying to make it easier for new pilots
Another extremely informative instruction video. Once again the series proves that the right mix of theory and practice will put you on the winning side in aircombat situations from WW1 & WW2. Its interesting to note that these tactics can be applied just as easily to Modern Jet Fighter Combat, albeit at greater speed and distance, the theory is the same. Cue a series on DCS?
Hey Spyboy! Good to hear from you and thanks for watching. I'd like to cover a few more of the CloD birds before I dare to tackle DCS. You're 100% right though, many of the rules have not changed much since 1916. See you on the servers soon?
Thanks - excellent advice that generalizes to other semi-obsolescent planes in other versions. (P-40 - I'm looking at you.) I wish they would have put the Hurricane into "Great Battles", since there were some in Lend-Lease (or whatever the Brits called it). Yes, it is another 2nd line fighter, but. . . it's the Hurricane!
Appreciate comments! The Hurricane (in my opinion) is a superior plane to the P-40 with its excellent turn and good dive, plus later marks had 4x cannon fitted giving it quite a punch vs .50 cals. I dont even bother trying to fly the P-40 on BoX and would rather sod about in the I-15; my mount is the Yak-7 which feels like a fairer opponent to the FW/Bf109 than the Spit IX. You're also spot-on with the lend-lease history. The Hurri was also a strong mount as a fighter-bomber used in several theatres thanks to its ruggedness. A friend of mine's father flew them in Burma and said it was the only bird he could safely fly through a typhoon (no pun intended).
Hello IL-2 GB devs are making Hurricane Mk II, Yak-9 and Yak-9T collector planes for Eastern Front right now. :) Like you said, Hurricane and P-40 are very obsolete against 109 F-4 and Gustav series, but it's an iconic plane that I will most definitely buy. I think it'll have a variety of armament modifications with different machine guns and cannons. Great video by Waggaz ;)
"The G-50 is not a good energy fighter". The G-50 was the slowest monoplane fighter in WW2. It was even slower than the fixed under carriage monoplanes like the Fokker D.XXI, Mitsubishi A5M or Ki-27 Claude.
It's basically hard-mode for anyone brave enough to fly it. That's hilarious that it was slower than the DXXI! Good knowledge. Have you ever managed to get a kill with it on MP? It's not easy but possible if you hit a radiator. I once got a VERY lucky pilot snipe on a Hurricane in a dive
The Breathers I find they are, yes. If you hit their wings it can be pretty rather than effective but if you can hit the tank they’re going down pretty quick. If you hit their radiator with AP it’ll do the job but they won’t go down fast
@@thebreathers324 are you asking if tracer rounds do damage themselves? I'm not sure on that; you could ask the TeamFusion guys. I dont like to use them as they can warn a bandit if you miss.
Doug Stone thanks! I hope you found it helpful. I have an old CH joystick and throttle combo each Velcro’d to a speaker stand on each armrest on my chair. I then have rudder pedals under the desk, and two throttle quadrants (six levers) attached to the left of my desk to manage radiators, prop pitch etc. I also have zoom in and out mapped to my POV hat on the joystick. To top it off I have a TrackIR 5 on my monitor and cap. I hope that hopes!
@@21wagstaff thanks heaps for replying! Yrs very helpful! The setup sounds great and obvious works well judging by your videos and flying skills. ..o was wondering about the sensitivity settings of your stick ...thus I've found has a big impact on lining up targets steadily...would you mind telling me what they are set to in game? Thanks heaps!
Doug Stone they are default for CloD. Skill is just practice (particularly engine management in dives and climbs). Try flying 30m vs the AI before hopping on a server to get your aim and feel of the bird. For RoF I have custom curve settings for some planes - I have a video on the SE5 for example
Thanks Micah! I've been musing making FC videos but I think I'll wait for the full release. It's no doubt going to go through a ton of changes in the next year, plus I cant recommend most punters should pay for both BoX and the $70 for FC at this stage (Jan '19) for 4 planes and no maps or campaigns! It's exciting to know it's in the works though. I really hope for dynamic style careers. I miss strong single player!
I actually prefer it to the Spitfire so long as there aren't 109s circling above the AF. The best 109 pilots only attack with alt or stay back and wait. I find it a more stable gun platform than the Spit too.
@@21wagstaff These were all my experiences with it as well, but I'll also add that I like the cockpit and visibility a bit better in the Hurricane. The fact that you have so much clearance between the gun-sight and the nose of the plane means you can more easily set up deflection shots that are not totally blind. If the Spitfire had better forward visibility than it would probably be my choice but I just can't deal with the massive blindspots to my front to be any good with it.
BirdyLegs I’m glad I’m on the money. Interesting point too on leading the target. I can see how in the hands of experienced and brave pilots like the Poles of 303 the Hurri was deadly. It again goes back to pilot over machine in a lot of cases. The tactics I use go all the way back to Dicta Boelcke and work as well as they did in WW1. Start above them or get them to burn their energy to get them where you want them, otherwise disengage
Thanks Mira! I hope you found it useful. I'll definitely get on to the 109 variants in the next few weeks. I might start with something a little different such as a look a the G50 (flying that vs Spitfires = HARD MODE!). Still a lot of fun though. Is there anything you'd like me to cover?
