A Beginner's Guide to Il2 Cliff of Dover Blitz / Tutorial - Waggaz Wings Ep. 20

Everything I wish I'd been told about Il2 Cliffs of Dover before I'd started flying the sim in a single video. I've pulled together all the tips I received from forums, online reference materials, and my own experiences.
I also take a look at getting up in the air in the Hurricane, managing the Merlin engines, and basic tips for combat. This is intended for beginners who have some prior knowledge of flying and simulators. Enjoy!

I fly with the community on the TWC Campaign server and we always welcome rookie. I've had 22 years of flying online dogfight sims so I'm quite used to mentoring rookies. We generally fly in flights and pairs so rookies can have a wingman shadowing them to show them the techniques and tricks required to not make parachute jumps. It can be a very steep learning curve for players who've started out on fantasy physics flying games like War Thunder. The correct way to fast start the Hurricane: If gear indicator show no green lights lower the gear before starting the engine (it's a bug). Fuel tank main (or reserve if preferred) on Radiator on. Throttle to 20% Start engine. Wait until the oil temperature hits 16 degrees C (15 to 20 seconds). Pulse brakes to unlock them. Take off. Hit the landing gear control 3 or 4 times to neutral, lower and then raise the gear. In flight set Rotol prop to 75% to 80% and run all the time with the boost ON (Boost knob out) unless low of gas in main and reserve tanks. (Boost knob in opens the supercharger waste gate and runs the engine in economy mode). Top airspeed in level flight with this configuration is 280 MPH (10 MPH faster than the Spitfire I) with the canopy closed. With the canopy open (for maximum visibility and to hear 109's / 110's / G-50's behind you 4 second before they can take a shot!!) the top air speed is 260 MPH in level flight. Maximum dive speed in Hurricane Rotol is 430 MPH (aerolons fall off at 440 MPH and wings at 525 MPH). The 109 has compressibility control lock at 370 MPH by comparison. The 110 can dive to 860 KPH and remain in one piece, so will always win a "who can out dive who" contest. The Hurricane with the DH 5-20 prop is faster at high altitudes and has longer range. It has poor acceleration at low altitude but does sip at the fuel. Good for bomber escort missions on the TWC Campaign server. On the Hurricane DH 5-20, Set the prop to coarse pitch (20 degree pitch setting) as soon as airborne or risk blowing the engine. Do not exceed 360 MPH in a dive with this prop as it DOES NOT FREE SPIN like the Rotol prop so will over rev the engine even on a closed throttle. One's dogfighting technique has to take this into account. Best to steer clear of the DH 5-20 prop versions if one is a rookie. The Hurricane can outturn, out roll and out dive the 109, G-50 and Spitfire. I have no problems sorting out 109's or G-50's with it. It just takes experience and technique with the Hurricane. It also carried 2 seconds more ammo than the Spitfire.

Hey Andy! Great to hear from you. Flying WW2 birds is very new to me. Even in real life I've not flown anything faster than a 152. It's interesting what you say about the Hurri's dive speed. I prefer to energy fight, and am not enjoying the Spit on CloD. The MkIX on BoX with the optional engine feels much better up high and more agile overall. I'd love to wing up some time and take some footage if you're ever around GMT evenings

I spent an hour trying to start the Spitfire,it kept stalling,I followed the atac wiki guide. The trouble is the controls are not specific enough for each ac,just a massive jumble of bindings mixed together.

@@Jellybeantiger Sorry to hear about your woes. The engine stalls a lot if you're not super careful with the throttle edging up. I always use the boost cheat to speed it up. once the magnetos are switched on and the fuel opened, press t to allow the extra boost. Start the engine with about 10% throttle then very gentle nudge up the throttle. Just as it begins to choke hold it there. after a few seconds the coughing will stop and you can nudge it up more. Once the water temp hits about 25 degrees try pushing the throttle to 50%. If the engine makes a creeky noise rather than chokes you can push it through to 100% and take off! You're right though, it's not exactly beginner friendly. I'd be happy to wing up on comms one evening to talk you through it. also make sure you have the right mixture setting otherwise the engine will cough like crazy.

@@21wagstaff Found it extremely helpful thanks! its a shame about not being able to change the plane loadout offline to load more incendiary bullets, it's fine against fighters but taking anymore than a bomber or 2 down is tough. The tips on keeping the energy up was crucial, not like other less realistic sims. One question if you have the time, what do you set your gun distance on? Can't remember if you mentioned that, might re-watch it:)

Owen Mathews yes the loadout is a pain. You can change it by playing with the mission editor but few have the time or inclination. On convergence I usually use around 300. The difficulty with wing mounted weapons is that once you’re closer than that you can miss with half the guns. Sometimes you have to shoot off to one side particularly when you’re up close. It depends on whether you want to take sniper shots at long range or hit and run. The default convergence is pretty good for all situations. I’d advise trying out difference settings to find the one you like. When you get it spot on you’re pretty much guaranteed a flamer!

Just spent 3 days experimenting with voice command, freetrack and the controls settings in game and I think I have finally found the ideal mix. Looking forward to playing with the mission editor to create some single player missions. Overall seems like a nice sim and looking forward to the release of the Tobruk dlc. Thanks for the tips and great video.

@@21wagstaff Years ago I used to play the original IL2 on this super old laptop. Since then I've upgraded and have a fairly decent PC, small 1080p 60hz monitor and homemade head tracking. I currently have the T16000 M with some old racing pedals that I'm using for rudder pedals. I know it's not the same thing but it is sure better then the stick twist!! I also got IL2 1946, but that was such a mission to play! I had so many problems, got sick of it and gave up. After my exams in a couple weeks I'll have to try got a bit more. I've been slacking off recently 😁

That should give you a decent set of controls to get started. I can highly recommend getting a quadrant to assign the radiator, elevator trim, prop pitch etc. The good thing about the Hurricane I Rotol is that you can leave radiator full open, and pitch full fine pretty much all the time, so you only need to concentrate on throttle and engine temp. I'd recommend starting by learning the Hurricane I Rotol vs bombers, then graduate to Spit Ia vs 109s and bombers. Also dont forget to press T to have the emergency boost on all the time. There's no reason not to if you watch your engine temp. Let me know how you get on.

Ray thanks! Most of my content right now is Flying Circus but I’ll come back to CloD with the Africa update. FC is a huge amount of fun particularly if you have VR. And yes, if I want to manually pump fuel I’ll load up DCS!

Thanks for a very helpful review , that may keep me going for a bit. Just bought this game and first impression was it was nowhere near as good or user friendly as Ils2 1946. Just did my training on the Tiger Moth which wobbled about like a jelly on quicksand. I've flown gliders for many years and a real Tiger Moth and I'm yet to find a sim that gets anywhere near a real life flight experience. Real planes are 'much' easier to fly, although real crosswind landings are a bit 'OMG'.

No, it's not very beginner friendly but once you start to master it I found it very rewarding. I made the video to try and help new players deal with the same problems I had at first. I also fly light aircraft and have likewise taken over controls on a Moth. Something about the controls in CloD just feel like they have real weight, just as they do in real life. With BoX the controls just feel too soft and easy, more like a fly-by-wire modern affair. Stick with it though and when you're ready DEFINITELY try multiplayer, just make sure you climb, climb, climb. There's some seriously good players, particularly 109 dudes, but they really need their altitude to dominate a fight, and many allied pilots scrap below 15k.

Thanks, Waggaz. I bought an earlier version, but did not have the patience to make it actually work. As with other commenters, I am considering investing in this version now that the 1C have taken it over. Compared with "Great Battles" there is the variety of planes and I think a better balance between the Axis and Allied planes. It is frustrating to be stuck with second-line fighters such as the P-39 and P-40 against first-line Axis fighters. (Noting that this is getting rectified to a degree in Bodenplatte.)

Old_Guard glad you liked the video! 1C are working in partnership with Team Fusion which is cool. See what you with of CloD. It feels a bit more in-depth and real, but less easy to dip into than BoX. The lack of VR is a shame though. My all time fave sim is still RoF. So much rich single player content which you don’t see often

How Does CloD/Blitz compare to great battles series in terms of flying models and realism? Does great battles have the similar options such as custom ammo belts and bomb fuze setting? How does the full mission builder compare to the one in Cliffs? I love CloD as it complements1946 by having a study of the one theatre that was ommited previously - I was initially put of Il2 Stalingrad as it offered far less content than FB and phaps lacked the realism of Cliffs - but I might be wrong about the latter presumption.

I've never flown a ww2 warbird with a large engine, only ww2 trainers and modern light monoplanes. My personal preference is the FMs in CloD. The planes in CloD feel like they have weight, whereas almost everything in BoX feels twitchy and smooth. I also prefer the damage model in CloD. Cannons do plenty of damage IF you hit, which feels more of a challenge than in BoX where cannons vapourise things pretty easy and AP rounds are fairly crappy. CloD gives you the shotgun effect as described by allied pilots when they used AP + DeWilde rounds with close range convergence. To my knowledge BoX doesnt let you pick the belt rounds. I'd say CloD is somewhere between DCS and BoX, and VR is on the way. I've not messed much with missions builder. You can set fuze timers on the BoX bombs. Hope that helps

HI, Waggaz. I have *Limited Fuel*, *Complex Engine Management* , and *Engine Temperature Effects* active in my Realism settings (IL2: CLoD Blitz) but the Boost Cut-Out wont activate/ pull out when I use either the mouse or "T" - the default key for it. Is there another Realism setting I should have active?

tommyzDad strange. It might be the hand management option. If I remember correctly there’s a control meant to simulate hand movements in the cockpit. I remember having a similar issue early on but found a solution on the game forums

RE: Loadout: Just FYI, (may have changed since video made but..) Under options/plane (from main menu only) you can customise plane loadouts outside multiplayer. Note however that all single player missions use loadout that was programmed when mission created and not the loadout shown, which is why you can't change loadout for offline play this way. However to use custom loadouts in any single player mission you can use the Full mission builder (Extras/FMB from main menu) to edit the loadouts (pretty easy to do once you know basics of using FMB (and FMB is almost exactly the same as the il-2 1946 FMB . If u search utube for "il-2 fmb" u can find vids on using the FMB) *Side note*: il-2 COD roots come from il-2 1946 same developer, and il-2 Great Battles roots come from Rise of flight, (different developer, same publisher, often confused)

One additional note: you cannot edit gun convergences this way. There is no setting in the Full Mission Builder.

@@moeburn Gun convergence for all planes is set in (plane options). Options->plane. Single player and mplayer missions use that convergence setting, just change it here for the particular plane used in the mission.There is only 1 gun convergence that is set per each differnt plane (has to be the exact plane version in the mission to work). I have tested and confirmed that is only place to set convergence. Loadouts however have to be set in each saved mission itself. (you can select loadouts (you made in plane options) and/or edit custom loadouts in mission for the plane (and save mission (good idea to also edit mission briefing info so you know its the mission file you changed).

just as FYI , gun settings presets for each plane are saved in the user.ini (in my documents folder for the game , which is where mission files are also saved). You can see each planes preset here (that you made) and note also only 1 gun convergence setting per plane. This is where FMB loads the presets from when u edit a mission(Ammo belts dropdown menu in FMB). And when you save a mission file it saves a belt loadout for each plane in the mission file, but game always uses the convergence from the games user.ini settings file for plane . Mission files don't contain convergence settings for planes.

It seems like a great sim, but I'm hesitating on buying it because of one limitation: I have no joystick. Do you think it's playable without one and just going pure mouse w/ keyboard, or should I invest in a joystick before playing?

Hey, defo need a joystick. I’m sure mouse is possible but it’ll be very tough given the realistic modelling. A $40 Thrustmaster will do the job fine

In single player campaign mode, how do you save at the end of a mission so that you can pick up from that point when you return?

If I remember correctly, once you completed a mission in a SP campaign you just clicked 'next mission' or something like that and it moves on to the next one and saves the campaign at that point in the mission tree. I dont think there's a facility to then go back and play previous missions without restarting the campaign. I hope that helps!

@@TDK-ty4cl Hey, you can zoom in and out using del, end, and page down to select 30, 60, and 90 degree view. in the camera controls you can also set keys to zoom in and out incrementally by holding down one key or the other. I set zoom in/out to my PoV hat on my flightstick (forward for zoom in, back to zoom out)

i have this game in original form from years ago iwth some TEam >Fusion Patches ...but i quit when no propeller circle was´nt showed anymore in the 109 or Stuka. You felt like flying a jet....sucks ! In general the game relies on good old "ADlertag" game without that´s huge and great strategic part where you play Göring and oder ALL units and send hundreds of Bombers in Formation to ENgland and sit in a Bomber or 109 whenever you want !

Why BoS is technologically superior to modern CoD Blitz + Desert Wings? I mean, airplanes fly closer to originals and reality in BoS and Great Battle series?

I think it's because the engine for CloD was developed a decade ago and abandoned, then resurrected and patched by enthusiasts who have subsequently monetised their work. 1C most likely have a much larger development team, plus the BoX engine is newer (although I think the source code is based on an earlier engine). Team Fusion have talked about major updates including VR at some point.

thanks for watching! I would very strongly recommend using a joystick at the very least to have any chance of controlling any of the birds easily, even with realism turned way down. I'll need to check the settings if there is a mouse option later. You can pick up some pretty good joysticks/throttles for fairly cheap these days. The Thrustmaster T-Flight is excellent value and surprisingly robust, plus it has a rudder control on the throttle so you dont need to buy pedals to get started.

G123S id strongly recommend choosing a bird which has simpler controls like the 109-F4 and getting used to flying it on quick missions. You’ll need to map the rudder controls to the rudder on the throttle quadrant etc. Maybe also practice shooting at ground targets and bombers so you get used to using the rudder to line up shots. With the f4 you just have to make sure you don’t use emergency power for more than a few minutes (keep the throttle

It should work. Mine works fine. Have you check the forums on il2 or Team Fusion?

I’m not sure. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re on full realism. The mouse is often used to interact with the cockpit

Juan Rodriguez I’ve not tried mouse and keyboard in CloD, but on full realism settings it really helps to own a joystick and throttle. When I started playing I didn’t own pedals and there are some decent cheaper joystick throttle combos out there. I’d really recommend one if you want to get the most out of the sim

RemusKingOfRome5 I quite like the damage models too! I feel like you lose control wires more easily in CloD which never happens in RoF and rarely for me in BoX. Ah the Defiant with its sting in the tail. Such an odd beast

@@21wagstaff 264 Sqn proved the defiants abilities if flown correctly, 141 Sqn proved how much of a death trap it could be if flown by sceptical novices. main problem was turret too small to hold more than 4 pop-guns. Considering how many pilots died by the unseen enemy behind, you'd think the defiant would solve that problem ?

RemusKingOfRome5 that’s an interesting one. If the enemy dived from the sun it would still be a problem. Also if they had dive from a very high alt then their speed would make them very hard to hit. They could also dive down and then hit them underneath - that’s what many WW1 SE5 jockeys used to do with their tilted gun vs two seaters

@@21wagstaff Yeh, That's basically the description of the destruction of 141 Sqn - Emil aces diving out of sun then attacked from 6 low.

@@RemusKingOfRome Yikes. I remember reading that when the Defiants did get kills it was sometimes when Emils mistook them for Hurricanes. Weren't they later used for night fighting which makes a lot of sense if the turret could be rotated

I bought CoD about 2 years ago and have not yet been able to get it to recognize my joystick. Its on windows 10. 80 bucks wasted!

Hey, yes! All planes for the base game are included. There’s also an add on for the Africa theatre which includes a crap load more. Great value for money IMO

That’s odd. Is it a major brand? I’ve never had that issue. Try another USB port?

Yes it’s a major brand. It’s a Logitech Attack 3 joystick.. I tried other ports too and still doesn’t seem to work. Oh well, I may have to pass this Blitz, and just go straight to Great Battles

It was never properly finished and has been rescued by passionate enthusiasts. The current release is miles ahead of the first commercial one which was unplayable - literally in my case. Team Fusion have done an amazing job bringing it back to life, but dont expect parity with Battle of Stalingrad etc

I thought the same but it just takes a LOT of setting up. Took me over 10 attempts and much YT time to figure out the most stable joystick trim. When set up correctly this game is seriously good.

Why Battle of Stalingrad is technologically superior? Apart the quality of images, in BoS airplanes fly closer to originals?
