Phil Campion, a former SAS soldier and a veteran of just about every major conflict zone in the world, travels to the front line in Syria and Iraq to meet the men and women taking the fight to Islamic State.
Known as 'Big Phil', he filmed for Sky with both the YPG and Kurdish Peshmerga, observing their war against a well-equipped and motivated enemy.
He experienced some of the worst battles of his life while embedded with the Kurds and met the all-female fighting units of the YPJ, described as a secret weapon of the war.
Are those fighting Islamic State properly equipped for battle? And is this a fight they can win? Find out in our special report.

It’s not that simple. It’s not just Turkey. It’s the fact that these militias have heavy Iranian influence. Plus, even though it’s nice that they killed Isis, if they took over iraq, it’d just become a puppet state for Iran. (Which America would’ve gotten blamed for by some of our Sunni allies like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, and more.) It’d cause a myriad of new problems and potentially a brand new war down the road. It was the best move to abandon the Kurds looking to the future.

Sure its been said but around 10:20-10:30 That is not a German rifle, its a Mosin Nagant 91/30 a Russian rifle, they did indeed make optics for them and of course scope mounts. Kinda surprised he didn't recognize it

9:23 - this german rifle is actually SOVIET mosin-nagant 90/31 i think , and this "additional side rail " is not new

The side rail is most likely original. that version of the mosin nagant had a curved bolt handle which means that rifle was issued as a sniper variant. Reg rifles have a angled bolt that sticks out with a scope in 1942. The sniper variants r kinda rare. Be a good Museum piece

The bolt-action rifle at 09.24 is a Russian/USSR made Moisin-Nagant M81/30 Sniper Rifle, (1881 from the year of its design, 1930 from the year of its adaptation and modification as a sniper rifle.) The scope and mount, (though only the mount remains in the example Phil inspects...) were German-made, which may explain the confusion. These rifles were in use by the Red Army from the late 19th century until after the Second World War. Post WWII, they were used by by forces supported by the Soviets, including guerrilla fighter and national armies in Africa, Korea and Indo-China/Viet Nam. (The German equivalent would be the KAR 98k, the British equivalent would be the Lee-Enfield MkIII.) xx SF

Came here for this comment, though the name Mosin Nagant is a Western misnomer. It's official designation was "Three Line Rifle" and colloquially known simply as the "Mosin" in the USSR. Also it is 1891/30 not 1881/30.

it might be cheaper for them to manufacture their own ammo, but I guess it is hard to buy the bullet casings, primers and all that, let alone the black powder. It is an option to save a lot of money on ammo. But it might be difficult or even impossible.

Same story everywhere. People given the least, expected to do the most - and patronized in the Process. Not only do they deserve a bit more than a quick Thumbs up from People - they should also be given a Homeland in Syria and Iraq. I'm astonished that that didn't happen when the new Government was established in Baghdad. If Bush and Blair are looking for a vaguely decent Exit Strategy then that out to have been it! The old rifle they are looking at is Russian. Marked 1942 with a Soviet emblem. Not German as one person states. Still quite crazy to see that on the battlefield at this point.

It's sad because I know some guys that have better Arsenal's in their home than the weapons these fighters are supplied with. That small group would need one . 50cal machine gun and sniper rifle, everyone should be equipped with an ar500 or equivalent, a M2 and a couple AA guns and they would be much more equipped than they are now.
